I had a orange 76. Wasn't very fast, it ran 16s @ 86 mph. My wife took her drivers test in it, she broke two of the fender flares, scraped wheels on curb. To this day, she scrapes the wheels on every car she drives.

nah, stock they were total sleds.. However, its very easy to get a 400 TA down in the 13s... Carb, headers, converter, gears... Do ram 3 heads, cam and she'll slide into the 12's..

I Like this In HS my first car which my Dad got my oldest Brother Brand New 1976 Trans Am 455 4 speed white with red interior You are right that red interior I Really Liked I started driving it 1978 a lady ordered it from Pontiac dealer ship but didn’t like 4 speed Fun car last year they put the 455 in and the front is one year only that it looks like that Still my Favorite To have a roll bar that 400 motor must be better I didn’t have roll bar and I had a big engine Great Looking Car

They used those heavy steel bars from about 73 to 75....then used the thin stamped steel braces 77 to 81....I dont believe 76 used them I could be wrong

Dog L78 400 with 185hp and auto trans lmao. I'll go with the 78-79 T/A with the W72 400 4 spd. Now that's a Trans Am!

turbotransam1980 With the right modifications, maybe, but not from the factory. The H.O. 455 was rated at 200hp in 1976.

What is the difference between the L78 and W72?

The L78 is the base 400 which had a lot of restrictions throughout the 70s because of all the government regulations going on. The W72 package is the high performance L78 400. The engineers revised the compression ratio in the 400ci through the installation of different cylinder heads with smaller combustion chambers. This resulted in about 40-50 more horse power. I meant to say 200hp for the 455 in my last post. By the way. I edited it.

i have a W72 i bought in 82. did not know at the time thay had different engines. just wanted a 4-speed. three engines- L78 400 pontiac L80 olds 403 and the top dog of the time W72pontiac in 78 there were W72s stick @auto 79 only stick
