Very amiable conversation. Interesting when you think of where the game has gone from here.

It is somewhat ironic that the son of a Triple Brownlow (and Sandover) Medalist never came over to Victoria to play or coach. He must be one of the biggest names (who had a clear historical link to Victoria) never to come over. I wonder if he was ever offered a coaching role or ever considered coming over to play? Perhaps playing for his father's former club (Fitzroy) was not too inviting as they were cellar dwellars throughout the 1960's

South Melbourne attempted to recruit him when he was 19 but North Adelaide refused the clearance request. He was one of the candidates for Fitzroy coach in 1980, the job eventually going to Robert Walls. Was mentioned as a possible coach of Sydney & Fitzroy in 1988 but he stayed at Subiaco.

@@sentimentalbloke185 Excellent stuff. Thanks. Sometimes it's all about timing. I doubt he could have done a better job than Robert Walls at the time. He nearly got them a flag in 1983, after being Wooden Spooners in 1980. As for playing, South Melbourne were no better than Fitzroy at the time. But I did read his wikipedia page saying he stopped playing for a year, and coached! That happened quite often back then. A different world

@@sentimentalbloke185 Did Fitzroy never try to get him as a player?

@@Adam-XL They may have spoken to him at some point but there was no real prospect of it happening AFAIK.

The Mighty Royals were great in the 70's, sadly we only managed to win the Premiership in 1972 and 1978. We should have had a couple more. I love the AFL now, but my love for the Royals was at another level. I would be devastated when we lost finals and in season games.

My Uncle was a mad Royals Man. He took me to the 72 GF when I was 9. Great day after losing all those GFs prior that.

@@AussieTVMusic Sooo true, we lost soo many Grannnies in the prior 15 years to 1972. Mal was our Captain Coach. Probably would have won some of them if Polly had not gone to Geelong. (or come back to East Perth after his stint at Geelong, but the then EP President thought Poly was too big for his boots) I was there in 1972 and was standing behind the Goals at the City end (Perth was kicking to the end), when the siren went to signal an amazing win. Geez I hated Perth almost as much as i hated West Perth.

@@qre268Zrtb I was on top of the toilets at the city end. My Uncle hoisted me up there. I was drenched but loved it.

@@AussieTVMusicAt 1 point in the 70's we had 5 Sandover Medalists in our team. Alan Quartermain, Barry Cable, Ian Miller, Phil Kelly. Peter spencer. No other WAFL Team has ever done this.

Royals lost 1960, 61, 66, 67, 68, 69 Grand Finals. Oddly, Derek Chadwick began his career in 1959 and retired in 1972, both EP Grand Final victories....he didn't get to play in either.

2:20- The saga of the "Old Lady"? Is Mal talking about the assault when he hit or pushed an old lady in a restaurant, because I vaguely remember something like that. But do you think you can find anything about that on the internet? Nup.
