I wonder if you primed fuel line it would have started right away

I don't think so, it was flooding the cylinder with gas but no fire, it wasn't until I tried a different spark plug then it started right up.

I’ve had very good luck with cheap Chinese carburetors , and very bad luck with cheap Chinese starters

Same here. I haven't tried many starters though.
