A former cop told me this Carlo Gambino story. Gambino was in back of his car, riding on Ocean Avenue, in Brooklyn, when he was stopped by an officer, for speeding. His driver attempted to flex, letting the cop know who's in the back. Carlo tapped the driver on his shoulder; giving him a finger wag, telling him to shut it, and obey the officer. The cop directs Gambino and the driver to come with him to the station. Gambino's car follows the cop car to the precinct. Gambino walks into the station, and the entire precinct, along with the captain, yells, "Hey, Carlooooooo!" Gambino offers to pay the ticket. The captain waives Gambino and the ticket off! "Have a nice day, Carlo!" That told me the respect Gambino got, for keeping a low profile and not being a jerk, as a boss.....!

It's Brooklyn, NY 1976. Everything is great, if your an Italian American. And why is everything great ? Because La Cosa Nostra is employing everyone. They are supporting high level elected officials, and policing their neighborhoods. Most white folks have fled to the burbs, but Italians remain because the unemployment rate is zero, And the crime rate in Italian neighborhoods is also zero. How else would a bunch of poorly educated fools like these live such a nice life style? And why would they have such nice thing to say about Carlo, a high level criminal? Unless of course he was putting money in their pockets, and keeping the place safe. How I miss those days.

Well the ordinary peaple seemed to think highly of him,and they didn't want to go in to details but you get the impression he kept the area safe and was willing to help those who asked. You don't see much of that from big peaple in other areas of society that's why people respect their local gangsters for lack of a better word.
