Always great to watch you go step by step through these restorations. You take a methodical approach which is what a lot of people don't do and they tend to give up too soon. Thanks for taking us along on another restoration journey.

Last time I had to drain old gas I hooked a small lawn mower gas tank to the carb and ran the engine and let the fuel pump drain the tank into a 5 gallon bucket, it doesn't take very long to empty a gas tank this way.

Hey Ben -Good to see you making videos again. 2 things. 1) I frequently fill the bowl of a carburetor with a small squeeze bottle when I want to test run a carb I have just rebuilt. 2) I find that I can start most engines on a shot of carb cleaner instead of ether. It is a lot safer too; ESPECIALLY diesels.

Don't sweat the battery on the garage floor myth. That's an old wife's tale from the days when batteries were made with wood and the plates went all the way to the bottom. What happened back then was similar to how a capacitor works. The wood acted like a paper insulator between the parts and a damp concrete floor could drain the battery over a period of time. (we're talking a few weeks) These days a battery is made of plastic which has greater insulating properties plus the plates inside are around an inch off the bottom, which prevents sediment from shorting the cells. IOW, the distance between the plates and the floor plus the better case material makes that discharge issue a thing of the past. Back to the engine stuff: if you cut the fuel line during your testing just install an in-line fuel filter till you have run a few tanks of gas through it. You might be amazed at how much crud that will keep out of the new pump and the carb. You can always run a new fuel line when the weather breaks and you get more time. I mean, after all you are going through, a new pump (eventually) and a carb overhaul is cheap insurance compared to a tow bill.... PLUS... you don't want to hear "I told ya so" from your old lady!

Glad to see it come alive at the end of the video. Like others have said though, be careful with using that much ether. It's fine in small doses, but I've always heard that using a bunch of it dries out the cylinder walls. Keep up the good work--looks like this is going to make a great car!

I suggest running guy wires from each corner of that shelter out a few feet then anchored into the ground. With the current setup there is nothing to stop wind from grabbing the top and beating it back and forth which will rip the thing apart no matter how many screws are used.
@TheCorvetteBen8 жыл бұрын
+Do R/C! It has t posts in the ground on each leg that go 2 feet into the ground. Hopefully that will be enough
@DoRC8 жыл бұрын
TheCorvetteBen The reason I'm suggesting this is I had basically the same setup except my poles were in concrete in the ground. The first decent storm we had saw the rest of the canopy flapping side to side until it departed leaving just the mangled bottom poles, still happily anchored into the ground. I added the guy wires to the replacement. That was 2 years ago and it's still standing.
@icondonnied8 жыл бұрын
I use the same shelter to cover up my 62 for the winters up here in MI. But I take the bottom section of the legs off. The peak of the roof just clears the top of the car. It's impossible to get the hood open far enough to work on it, but when it's -20 out with eleventyone feet of snow, you don't feel much like wrenching anyway (really wishing I had a garage).

I was surprised you didn't check the reverse lights while you were checking all the other lights.
@raystapp40018 жыл бұрын
Some vehicles including GM products, needs the engine running to check the reverse lights. The switch that turns on the reverse lights is hydraulically operated when the transmission goes in reverse. I always grab a friend or relative to operate my vehicle when I check the reverse lights or back in a parking spot with a window, plus it's a good way to check your brake lights on a foreign car with amber cornering lights.

Put a hunk of wood under batteries when on concrete
@CurlyQLink8 жыл бұрын
Everything I have read about this subject indicates that putting modern car/truck batteries on a concrete (garage) floor is fine. The reason why it was perceived to be bad to put a car battery on a concrete floor relates to the old batteries that required maintenance. These old batteries would leak, ruining the concrete floor, not the battery.
@lukassmith52578 жыл бұрын
Curly Q. Link The reason you don't want to put any battery on a concrete floor is because it will de charge it. Concrete is porous. Think of it like this lay down on a concrete floor see what happens now put down some plywood lay on it and see.....
@ChileExpatFamily7 жыл бұрын
As a former submariner which was a huge nuclear powered battery, I would put it on wood.
@InSanCen7 жыл бұрын
Care to explain the chemistry on that? Pb will self-discharge, but I can't think of a way that concrete under the plastic of a battery would accelerate that.
@MrWilliamtomkinson7 жыл бұрын
it dosnt, its based on an old concept when batteries where in hard rubber casing, and before that, in glass, , the cold concrete could crack the rubber or glass.. it has nothing to do with any battery made in the last 100 years.
