Nice cleanup and color grade here. Picture had a greenish tint to it which I was able to correct and really make the color appear normal again. Topaz was used to revert compression, upscale, and sharpen. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files used for this project

I miss those classic Rams helmets and uniforms. I despise their current logos and uniforms. Just because you move into a new stadium like SoFi doesn't mean you have to change the look that made the team iconic. The Raiders didn't do that when they moved to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Dave Volsky beautifully restoring massive numbers of NFL games from mostly the 1976 thru 1980 seasons, I think. Its incredible! There was no NFL Sunday Ticket back then so I had to miss a lot of these great games because they were not broadcast where I was. That just left trying to catch highlights, and sometimes not even those were available! (ugh) This is great! So great, to now finally be able to watch missed games from waaaaay back, in their entirety, that I had so wanted to see but could not. Now, if only someone could find full coverage of the infamous 1976 AFC divisional playoff New England at Oakland.....(sigh).....not just the NFL game of the week highlights of that meeting! Sadly, it looks like no full coverage exists..

Shocking shotout and only highlight for Namath as a Ram. 1 minute in, and I see Lawerence McCutcheon breaking tackles. Super underrated as a runner, breaking tackles and a flashy runner. If it wasn't for the non-precise passing in all 3 of the NFC Championships, they could have got a Super Bowl. I know that he made the Super Bowl in 1979, but he only had 243 yards. That was past his prime years, 1973-1977.

Devastated in the playoffs by the Cowboys and Vikings. 2-4 against the Cowboys and 1-3 against the Vikings in the playoffs over the eight season period of 1973 thru 1980. Their only breakthrough was 1979 when they narrowly escaped the Cowboys 21-19 in the divisional round in Roger Staubach's last NFL game. That allowed them to advance to the 1979 NFC Championship where surprise Tampa Bay was the opponent instead of Minnesota for once. They were just strong enough to get past Tampa Bay and into their first ever Super Bowl. Super Bowl XIV against Pittsburgh. The only time they broke through the Dallas/Minnesota road blocks in those 8 years.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 4 ай бұрын
@@scottmitchell3641The NFC in 1979 was arguably very watered down. In fairness to the Rams, their performance on the season could’ve easily been better if not for injuries, but the fact remains they were a 9-7 team with a point differential of +14 on the season. Dallas as you said had a 37 year old Roger Staubach in his final season (a very good year but it was his last), and their defense wasn’t even top 10. Minnesota was in transition and just starting Tommy Kramer. They went 7-9. Similarly San Francisco had just drafted Joe Montana, but were still starting Steve DeBerg, and were 2-14. Washington had been solid in the 70’s, and of course won a Super Bowl in 1982, and in 79 they had Joe Theismann, and John Riggins but hadn’t drafted the Hogs, Art Monk, or a few of the defensive players from that title team. And of course Tampa Bay was the other team that made the NFC Championship game in 1979, and while they had a number one defense with Lee Roy Selmon who was defensive player of the year, their offense wasn’t even top 20. That NFC had a win percentage of 30.77% vs its AFC. The worst ever for one conference vs the other since the merger. If you theoretically inserted the Rams in the years Knox coached them into that 1979 NFC, they’d easily make a Super Bowl in my opinion.

Lots of New York football memories in this broadcast and on the field. Namath and commentator Emerson Boozer were in the Jet backfield in Super Bowl III. Herman Edwards would later coach the Jets and of course be involved in the famous (maybe infamous) "fumble" game between the Giants and Eagles in 1977. Later in his career, Ron Jaworski would be chased twice a year by Lawrence Taylor. Taylor was every quarterbacks' nightmare.

The Eagles, in their second year under Dick Vermeil, were still a year away from being a playoff contender in 1977, enduring losing streaks of 2, 3, and 4 games, peppered with the occasional win against the weaker sisters of the NFL. The Rams were still a regular Super Bowl contender, as they were through most of the '70s, and this game was a mismatch all the way, with the Rams outgaining the Eagles 356 to 112.

Rewatching some of the 75 & 76 games I completely forgot why the Rams let Harris and Jawarski go when both had shown alot of promise between injuries (healthy Harris looked like the complete package) the plan was to bring in Namath let him win a title and mentor Hayden. This game in isolation made that look like a good decision. Namath with an offensive line and a running game seemed like he still had something left in the tank. Just because an idea doesn't work doesn't mean it was a bad idea

It continually blows my mind just how many people have an ax to grind against Morton when it comes to Staubach. He came within 3 points of a Super Bowl win himself as a starter and if it hadn't been for some horrible calls going against the Cowboys in Super Bowl V he'd have gotten it.
@scottmitchell3641
@scottmitchell3641 4 ай бұрын
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Agreed. I feel bad for Craig. In Super Bowl V, with Dallas down around the Baltimore 7 yard line, he had an easy touchdown pass set up to a wide, wide, wide open Duane Thomas who was sitting out there in the left flat with Cowboy offensive tackle Ralph Neely out there with him and ready to escort him unmolested straight into the end zone once he caught the easy pass. Somehow long armed linebacker Ted Hendricks of the Colts just managed to barely tip the pass right at the last second just as Morton released it and it fell imcomplete. I can't get over how Staubach is exactly one year older than Morton. Staubach was born on February 5, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio and Morton was born on February 5, 1943 just one state away in Flint, Michigan.

Different era. QBs doing better than 55% completion were pretty rare and INTs, although bad, were not the end of the world. Namath's yards per completion has him 11th All-Time. The top 15 in NFL history are all players from before 1977. That's the football they played, high risk/high reward. Morton BTW is ranked 29th All-Time per pass completion. For comparison, Mahomes is currently ranked 118th
