I remember seeing an advertisement in a magazine for this model back in 1977. I was 13 at the time . To this day I have never actually seen one of these. They must be extremely rare. You have a beautiful car and have taken great care of it.

I owned a 1977 Le Mans Sport Coupe years ago. The stock 301 V8 was a gutless dog, but that car handled like a tight sports car. With the 400ci and likely upgraded suspension, this is what I wish mine was.
@chrisallot667 жыл бұрын
Just a fun fact... the Can Am actually made over 260 hp. The NHRA realized it and rated it as such. That would explain why it ran a 15 second quarter mile. New exhaust would push it close to 300 no doubt about that.
@jeremythompson98955 жыл бұрын
I'm a Mopar guy but the 77 Can Am is hands down my favorite car of the mid to late 70s and most of the 80s.....until the Buick GNX came out. These were more of a GTO then a 74 Ventura GTO was. 15 second quarter mile times are VERY fast for a late 70s car. Super cool looking car too. I'd take this over a late 70s trans am any day of the week
@WisdomOverWicked777Rules3 жыл бұрын
There's no way at 260 horsepower engine can run 15 second quarter mile you got something wrong somewhere son

Yep, throw in ago set of heads, and a cam, you probably would get to 400 in this.

T tops were a great idea, and they looked cool, but never worked all that well. They leak rattle, and you cannot go through a car wash after that car was more than 10 years old, those seals and T Top clamps sucked.

Non-original wheels, supposed to be body colored rims with chrome rings. Again, non original functioning scoop. At least he’s right about the dash. It does have the optional console shift instead of the column shift. And, yes , the 400 ci was underrated at 200 hp... honest number was closer to 260.
@tomcannone88946 жыл бұрын
Michael Wojciechowski no way the HP rating was 170 net.
@MichaelandCathy19996 жыл бұрын
Tom Cannone Well, according to other sites and vids, including well known classic car sites, it was closer to 240-260 h.p. than below 200. For example, the Hemi has always been stated to be 426 ci / 425 hp, but many sources with Dyno tests showed it to be closer to 460-475 hp.

G.M. big heads were stupid in the 70s, and haven't gotten much smarter since. These were great cars,and a step up from the norm. The fact that they dumped these cars in favor of the worn out Grand Prix ,is proof of their incompetence. Same with the slowest Corvette ever built. Speaking of the Corvette,this high dollar monstrosity is ugly,over priced,and shows just how far GM has moved from its over the years,loyal buyers,in favor of the elite. Most of these buyers don't even appreciate a Corvette for what it is,or at least what it once was.

We have a survivor all white bench seat interior one with the 403 Olds. It is so cool to see the looks you get from people when you're driving it. The car only has about 77k miles and has had a very sheltered life. Garage kept and like yours treated as a collector car from day one. Nice car sir, keep it the way it is and I'll do the same. Enjoy it and drive it on occasion as I do.

All these cars need are a Comp cam and a set of smaller chamber heads and you are talking some serious musclecar potential here. 70 s GM A body cars ride and perform incredibly well if they have stiffer springs and sway bars. This car has that. Now get closer to 400 flywheel horses and they come ALIVE! I have a 74 Buick Century GS 455 same body / frame as this car...love my high compression 455 with cam/headers/intake/MSD....yeeeehaaaa!

I thought these had an engine turned dash like the TA. I remember there was one bought new in our small town for about 2 years. I just don't recall that very well, looked at it once up close. I rolled my nose at catalytic converters and unleaded gas in those days as I had a 69 Firebird.

I had a 1976 Pontiac Grand Le Mans.. same color.. white with firethorn red inside and a landau top in firethorn red. It had the same dash as this one, but a clock was where the tach was. My car had the gauge package and a factory 8 track and the RTS. It had the 350 in it, so not as fast, I do not know if the Grand Le Mans was heavier or not. I had the Rally ll wheels and tilt wheel and the bumper group..I sure wish I had it back. For some reason the Pontiac Le Mans did sell likeother GM brands.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's and the cars where truly exciting. Of course by 1971 all my car buddies and I could see the writing on the wall and knew the party was over. If killing the engine performance wasn't bad enough the federally mandated 5mph bumpers in 1974 killed the looks of cars too. I remember when these "Can AM" Pontiacs came out we all found them laughable at best because of the anemic horse power they produced. Having said that and looking at this car I wouldn't mind owning it today. I love the interior and who couldn't like the stripes and graphics? The car does make a statement. Still, for now I'll have to stick with my '71 SS LS5 454 El Camino.

@Krashdavus11 жыл бұрын
Actually, Sacot Perona's assessment is incorrect. The production of the Can Am ceased because the mold tooling required to manufacture the deck lid spoiler broke. The funds needed to refurbish the tooling was never approved. End of the Can Am production. Only a couple thousand were made.
@M21L3510 жыл бұрын
As unique as this is, why no underhood shots to show that TransAm plumbing to view that unique 1-year-only installation in a LeMans Sport Coupe?! 42 of these were also produced (late) w/403 Olds motors, but the shaker then displayed a '6.6 LITRE' decal, as well as a different-ratioed rear axle. Can Am's were not entirely built this way by Pontiac, but were shipped (w/ 400/403's) to Jim Wanger's Motortown, Inc.facility where final modifications were performed. Orders were for 5,000 but only 1,377 were built due to a broken mold used to fabricate the fiberglass rear spoiler.

@chrisallot667 жыл бұрын

cool car...GM used those door mounted outside rear view mirrors(ralley) on a lot of cars, you'rs does have the passenger side remote though, not common...or maybe it is if you have it. i thought the lemans was an "a" body, the trans am was an "f" ? i'd warm that poncho motor over big time, change out the vari rate steering box, and up the rear gears. those honeycomb wheels aren't original, i'd bet if you pulled them off and looked on the inside at that date code they'd predate the car.

...because they were overweight, ill handling gas drinking slugs with all the added on do-dads, wall to wall carpeting, etc. and leaned out "smog" engines huge blind spots out the non existent rear quarter windows, tiny rear view mirrors. they started to rust while being assembled at the factory and had general overall poor build quality. plus most of these sat and sat on the dealers floor for awhile until they got rid of them. they weren't popular then and aren't now.
