that seems strangely low. especially given the gauges are, as you say, custom, whjy would they put the redline so high
@frankspatone Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I caught the low revs. Very strange. At the same time, the boost gauge kicks in significantly lower than stock, which is usually at around 4,000 RPM. This one seems to come in at around 2,500 RPM, which makes me wonder whether they upgraded to a larger turbocharger. Nonethess, fantastic first-person experience, thanks. Curious: Is that a GoPro with stabilization on? Footage looks good.

The memories this triggered! I can finally admit to secretly stealing my dad’s 1988 930 in the middle of the night back when I was 16 years old. We had truly mastered pushing that damn car out and down the block before starting it so it didn’t wake him up. The joys of growing up with that car in the garage and mulholland highway in your backyard. It’s a wonder I never wrapped that car around a tree. Those LONG gears are what I most vividly recall when I think about the driving sensation of that car since no other car on the road is like it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

@robertd44683 жыл бұрын
Turbo lag is mechanically advantageous. I’ve tried to explain this to people but they just don’t get it. At slow traffic speeds you’re not boosting the engine and therefore not building heat. You basically just have a naturally aspirated engine. When you get on it then you’re building boost at high RPM. Engines that build boost at low RPM are inducing high torque and increasing internal pressures which is just bad for your engine at low RPM. You seriously decrease the lifespan of any engine doing that as you’re lugging the motor. I tried explaining this about Subaru STI’s and that it’s actually better for the life of the engine. If you want to absolutely haul ass, take it to the limiter and shift before dropping the RPM below boost levels. It’s that simple. If you’re just cruising around town, stay out of the boost and save your motor.
@digitalparadigms2 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's a pretty easy concept. With this car, with only 4 gears, it's hard during cornering or sweeping turns/curves to always match a gear to the speed required while keeping boost up. Always mindful it doesn't come on full boost mid apex if you don't expect it or know what to do. At least without power steering and with great steering input/feeling, you are less likely to overcorrect when/if the tail starts to come out.
@Excepticus3 ай бұрын
Question here: Turbo diesels kind of need the turbo from the start so why is it that turbodiesels still last long if high boost at low rpm is bad? Cheers

Which is my favorite generation of turbo? The 3.3's. Why? Because they have the closest connection to the 934s and 935s. Later cars are of a different time, and like all more recent Porsches, faster, safer, etc. But the 3.3s are of the time when they were the kings of the road. On track they easily had the number of Pantera GT5s, Various Ferraris, BMWs and Chevies.

The beauty of the 930 in my opinion, unless you were "in afterburner," the car was as docile as a VW Bug. I had the opportunity to drive a street converted 934 once. Andial built the engine, so depending on how tight you cranked the boost, it had between 400 and 800 hp. I drove it around a bit to get the feel if it, hit a freeway onramp, and hammered it. When the boost hit 8/10 of an atmosphere, I saw God(!!) the acceleration was so brutal. Enjoy it... it's stunning with the slopenose. Over a period of 35 years I had TWO 356 Speedsters, 61S coupe, 70 914, 77 911S, 88 924S. The car I cry over, I came within a hares-breath of buying 904-012 when Steve Berg owned it, back in '67.........

Interesting fact about this car! The brakes on it are actually not what the 930 would have (depending on the year) originally came with! The front calipers are the aluminum alloy's off of the 911S models produced from 1969 to 75+, depending on special edition cars and some 930's. A majority of 930's (everything past 1975 1/2 from what we know) would have had the black anodized finned 4 piston calipers like what was being used on the 911 RSR IROC's and later 917's like what was in the Can Am series. The aluminum 911S calipers are actually a dual piston style made by Fuchs (yes the ones who make the wheels) but designed by ATE. A bit interesting to see on this car but kind of cool to have the heritage of a 911S on a 930.
