1977 Toyota Land Cruiser (BJ40) Review and test ride
Fully restored 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 body - The ORIGINAL Land Cruiser!
Although technically the 3rd generation Land Cruiser (having the original BJ/FJ, plus the J20/J30), this can be considered as the first popular Land Cruiser that Toyota sold widespread.
This car has been the inspiration for the ever famous FJ Cruiser that has been sold by Toyota since 2006. Extremely rugged, great for off road. On road prowess is a little questionable though. No power features, old school all the way. This car doesn't even have power steering.
This particular one is a short wheel based variant with an inline 4 Toyota B diesel engine hence the BJ code.
Made from 1960 - 1984

It’s right. The diesels are the 4 cylinder B engines. 1B to 3B. I‘m not sure if they made a 40 with the 3B-T. The petrol ones are equipped with the F-family of engines. The 6 cylinder diesel H engines are pretty rare in the 40s. The number gives you the idea of the wheel base. The higher the number the longer the wheel base. The 42s are short, the 43 is medium, 45 long and I think there was a super long one too. Land Cruiser Legend by Alexander Wohlfart is a great book about the Land Cruiser Family and covers all models from the Toyota BJ till the Land Cruisers 70/150/200.

40 series is not the original, but was the first landcruiser model sold in many countries. They started using "landcruiser" back in the 50's. FJ25 Landcruiser came in the early 1950's and the original BJ before that ;)

@@KyleLiongCars I have a mk1 pajero canvas top to witch I installed a b engine. Added a turbocharger and it transformed the engine - nice allround torque at any engine speed. I run conservative boost pressure and in a non turbochargeable engine doesn't remove from it's legendary reliability. In all, the best 4x4 for my budget: relatively quiet, comfortable, reliable. I afectionately call it "Toyobishi"

I think this is not the original B engine that came with this truck. There are a lot of telltale signs. One example is the air intake, it is pointing sideways.

$80K?! No way. Not truly original at all. I have a 77 FJ40 that is original (ashtray opens and glovebox still has the cable stay, original AM radio and no AC…just foot vents!😛). On a good day I MIGHT get $40K for her…if it were diesel, maybe $50K.

@@KyleLiongCars I’m in the Northeast US. Admittedly, I’m not up on current LC values outside the US, but I can’t imagine those values are that much higher than ours…or are they? Don’t get me wrong, that BJ is a nice rig, but to get that sort of money here it needs to be perfectly original. My rig is not 100% perfect either but it’s pretty close. I’d be thrilled to get $50K but realistically it’s probably only worth $40K at best. Just my $0.02.
