This video is all about this 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. This is a smooth, comfortable, and luxurious classic car that gives a driving experience unlike any other car on the road today. I took a lot of inspiration from Doug Demuro while making this review. A big thanks goes out to my Dad for helping me with the video. I hope you'll enjoy it!

I am 51 and remember seeing all of these majestic monsters on the road as a kid. My grandparent’s 1973 Fleetwood Brougham (in Phoenix gold over black) started an obsession with Cadillacs that continues to this day. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about the ride quality and extreme comfort of these 1970s Cadillacs. It just has to be experienced to be believed. There is a part of me that is deeply nostalgic for this exact period of American luxury cars and would love to see this type of vehicle make a return in some way. Great review!!

That is really neat! Many people who I talk to about these cars find them nostalgic as well, so many people have stories or reasons to be very attached to them. And the 1970's Fleetwood Broughams are some of my favorite cars! They were one of the most luxurious Cadillacs. I haven't had the chance to ride in one but I'd love to hopefully someday. My dads first car was a 1969 Fleetwood and he absolutely loved it, and I can see why! They definitely do need to be experienced to be believed, and I'd love to see cars like this make a comeback. I think more people would want to buy used and new cars just like this if they got to experience it! Anyways, thank you for the wonderful comment and for watching the video, Jane 😁

I'm just a couple years older than YOU and I feel the same. I still remember to this day when my uncle picked up his brand new 1973 Eldorado from the dealer and came straight to our house. He let me sit in it and play with all the gadgets which many cars have today but only Cadillac had back then. I was 8 and it started MY love of Cadillacs. I've had 11 so far! LOL I currently have 4! A 1976 Fleetwood, a 1984 Coupe DeVille and a 1994 Fleetwood. Plus my daily driver which is a 2014 Escalade. I WILL say that these kids who make these videos crack me up with that "zero to sixty" test and how floored they are at how long it takes. They just will never understand that 50 years ago, no one cared about how fast the car got to 60 (unless you had a sports/muscle car) and no one who drove these cars WANTED to do something like that. The national speed limit was 55 and your average Cadillac owner just sort of took their time to get where they wanted to go. That's also why these cars are great boulevard cruisers.

When I read in your description that you were inspired by Doug Demuro, I almost passed on watching. I'm glad I watched this review. You are far more positive. You do not make abrasive snarky demeaning comments or expect something 40+ years old to have the same functions/features as current cars. You also nailed it when you explained the goal of Cadillac at that time. You did a great job of pointing out features of the car and I will be looking forward to more of your reviews.

This guy is way better than Doug. I don't consider Doug to even be that much of a car guy. All he cares about is how much a car costs and how fast it goes. And anything pre 2015 is just "old school" to him and is to be mocked for having a crappy "infotainment system".

James, I'm sure glad I found your channel. What an awesome review of this Eldo. You show all the high points of luxury these cars were known for, especially the smooth ride. Your review is so positive also. Like others have commented, not so "whiny and negative" like Doug you-know-who! When I was a teenager growing up in South Jersey, I used to detail a local lady's '78 Eldo (non-Biarritz) it was Aztec Gold (rare color for that year Eldo) with the same creamy-yellow leather interior, and it had the Vogue tires, which was an excellent contrast with the Aztec Gold exterior color. Oh, and each year I would detail the car, it was kinda sad, because it was not garage-kept, and parked under a walnut tree! So the sap would get encrusted on that beautiful Gold half-vinyl roof! The 425 V-8 was a hummer of an engine. Thanks again for showing your appreciation and interest in these "old school" '70's cars!

I did not hear the secondaries open on the 4 barrel. All the the Cadillacs my mom had that were 4 barrel carbs you could hear the secondaries muted but there. Q- jets were notorious for their secondaries not opening. Without them really makes for slow acceleration. My mom and aunt both had DeVilles with the 425-4bbl engine and they had great acceleration from about 20to 25mph on up. The very tall axle ratio they used on the DeVilles ( a 2.29 to 1, I think) and a 4800 lb automobile made launching either tire smoke if you over power brakes it or what felt like forever for the engine to get into its power curve. Anyway, if you look at the outputs of the 500 from 1976 and the 425 from 1977 there is not a big difference in the numbers. Not enough that it would have been that obvious. The 425 punched way above its size class. Me, my cousin, my best friend all of our Mom’s had 425 DeVilles and we were always amazed at the car we could beat in those land yachts. I had a Turbo Trans Am pace car and a Z28 that had problems with the secondaries not opening. The difference in acceleration without the secondaries was crazy. I don’t think the Eldorado was that much heavier and don’t think think Cadillac had a worse axle ratio that the 2.29:1 so the 77 Eldorado should have been quicker. Easy way to check is flip breather and floor it. The moan when the secondaries open is unmistakable and with the breather lid flipped also quite loud.

Anyway on the the vynl I love the halfway on top of the vehicles you think about it that sometimes those vinyls wear out so it's less expensive to replace it then to replace the whole top I'm sure the paint stay the whole lot longer-lasting than your vinyl. It is truly a beautiful car! It is white with a beautiful red leather interior. And that's a very good point about the vinyl top! I don't mind the look of it so much on this car but I think it definitely plays a part in showing the cars age lol. Ooh that is incredible! I wish I could buy a new Cadillac every year haha, that is so neat. I've heard many stories of people's grandparents and parents who would buy new Cadillacs quite regularly. I was fortunate enough to buy a brand new 1978 Eldorado Biarritz off the David Taylor Cadillac showroom floor in Houston TX in '78. It was a solid dark brown metallic color --- note that Cadillac also offered the '78 Biarritz in a two tone version (that I never particularly liked). You are right about the seats - UNBELIEVABLY COMFORTABLE and never before or since have I ever sat in more comfortable car seats. The car had front wheel drive which made for an unusually flat front seat floor area. It was my first (and only) Cadillac and I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years of owning the car. Not particularly "fast", but who cared -- all out luxury of the car out weighed any acceleration shortcomings. It certainly got the driver from point A to point B in its "land yacht" style of the day. I now drive an Audi S7 which is another car altogether -- twin turbo V8 does have all the performance & acceleration you'd ever want. Still fondly remember that '78 Cadillac Biarritz though. Just subscribed.

That is incredible! It would have been fun to drive a brand new one, although this one was certainly like-new. And I agree, the two tone brown versions of these cars seem really ugly to me. I'm amazed that those colors were ever in style! It's neat that you were able to experience one of these for several years and got to enjoy it, so many others are missing out. And the Audi S7 is a beautiful car! Definitely one of my favorites, I'd love to review one someday. Rick, thank you so much for the comment and subscription, I really appreciate the support 😁

The door pull backplate was changed as complaints came in that women were breaking their fingernails on the raised embossed print. So they made the backplate smooth. The scan feature was a downgrade from the upgrade 8 track. They have had the "wonder bar" for many years in Cadillac and Corvette. On my 76 I swapped out the upgraded 8 track with the scan feature stereo as I thought it was so much cooler and would never use the 8 track anyway. I did put it aside as it is original to the car. Great review!

Some 1970s cars did have airbags, as they were first offered by GM in 1973. 1978 Cadillacs definitely had them as an option. And that extremely soft style of seating was referred to as "loose-pillow" seating in the seventies, first introduced on the 1972 Oldsmobile 98 Regency and really refined by 1978 on cars like this Eldorado Biarritz. The best examples of it, I think, were on mid-seventies Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman and Fleetwood d'Elegance, mid-seventies Buick Electra Limited Park Avenue, and mid- to late seventies Lincoln Town Car and Lincoln Mark IV and Mark V. It echoed popular furniture styles of the time. A cool thing about this period is that "creature comfort" luxury upholstery somewhat like this could be found on cars of various sizes, with plush velour seats found on mid-size cars like Oldsmobile Cutlasses and AMC Matadors and even on some subcompacts like Ford's Mustang II Ghia.

I have heard of some cars being offered with airbags back then which is incredible. And that's correct! I've seen a few Fleetwood Talismans and they have some of the nicest and softest looking seats. I haven't paid enough attention to those Buick models but I've also noticed some Lincolns with very similar looking seats that also look extremely nice. I would really love seats like that on modern cars today!

5:54 I personally love the half vinyl tops but it really depends on the car (this 78 Eldo, 1960 Imperial, ect). The reason they only cover the rear is because of the “landau” configuration which is a throwback to the carriage building roots of car body design. In some custom coachbuilt cars from the 20s and 30s, 40s, and some in the 1950s, the top would fold down in a half configuration like on the production Kaiser Darrin.

Omg!!!! I love this old 70s Eldog!! I remember one of my parents friends had one in a red or burgundy color!!!!!! I was born in middle 70s grew up in the 80s high school in the 90s !!! Graduated college in 2000!!! My parents were GM folks in the 60s and 70s they had a Chevy Malibu and Buick Riviera!!!! But by the early 80s my parents got a Volvo 760 , and then they got the 80s iconic Audi 5000!!! What a horribly unreliable car, but nice… then my parents bought a 1991 Acura Legend!!!! What a great car!!!! Reliable car with a great reputation and resale value!!! After that car my parents only bought Honda brand!!! And today 3 decades later!! Still only HONDAS !!! They even bought my sister a brand new 1988 Honda CRX Si for high school and college and I got the 1991 Honda Prelude Si!!!! And it was a wonderful and reliable car for high school and college!!!! But I Love these big old Cadillacs !!!! I wish more people still bought these American 🇺🇸 brands!!My parents were of this area but sadly left GM for other brands and stuck with Honda 🤷‍♂️ I know big trucks and SUVs and the common popular sales market !!!! But got to love big sedans, coupes and wagons!!

Hi, I gotta tell you, I just started watching your channel, & I do enjoy your talking about these Cadillacs, it makes me think back when you walked into the showroom & saw such big comfortable cars, styling that was classic, & they didn't look like everything else on the road compared to today, that Eldo definitely had some very comfy seats, too bad seats today aren't like that, anyway you do a great job, & I'd love to see you doing videos on older sixties and seventies CDV's, as well as the mid- seventies Fleetwood's with the optional Talisman interior, those were also cool, I thought that 61 Sedan DeVille you did was cool, the fact that it had a minimum of options to the tune of $600, & no air conditioning, that's a rarity you wouldn't expect to find, but still "best of all, it's a Cadillac", take care!!!

@@JW_Reviews Being the standard of the American automobile, Cadillacs were all outstanding in their own ways. The 71-72 Eldorado didn't have as much technology as the later models, but they offered a little more horsepower. In 1972 the 8.2 litre V8 produced 235 hp @ 3,800 rpm with 522 Nm of peak torque @ 2,400 rpm. This isn't the 400 hp of its predecessors but feels better than the newer models. Find one, take it for a ride and maybe fall in love? Either way, I would love to see and hear your review.

As the owner of both early and late '70s Cadillacs, I'd have to disagree. Once high-energy ignition (1974), catalytic converters and EFI (1975) were introduced, a lot of the emissions-related drivability problems went away. The '72 cars, with their Air Injection Reactors (smog pump), exhaust gas recirculation, PCV valves and Speed Controlled Spark advance, were a low point. Vacuum-hose spaghetti that was gradually replaced by much more reliable electronics.

Enjoyed your review, your take and your impressions- as always. Agree 100% there is nothing wrong or "old person" about the luxury of comfort... it's a shame not many new cars offer that... 2011 was the last year of the Town Car and Deville - and the Continental and CT6 are really only mid-size and already discontinued... Chrysler could have one-upped them all by bringing back the full-size Imperial... but they goofed and didn't.

Great review and being a few (6) yrs old than Mr. Miller, I have to say my friend's father had one of these in white with the moonroof and the red leather interior. My own biological donor had a '76 Seville and it was in this yellow combination you are showing for the Eldo. The half vinyl roof was supposed to offset some of the massive acreage of sheet metal that was the roof. It broke it up a little and added a certain level of (70's) style to the overall look. If you see an Eldo without this feature, they look rather cheap. Also, on these cars they offered only glass moonroof options, as they were coming into vogue. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the sliding metal sunroof options were phased out by '72??? Great review. Lots of fun information and the ride.......truly like a cloud.

Another great video! I remember these cars from my childhood and they left a permanent mark on me as representing the best that America ever had to offer in terms of straight-up luxury. My uncle drove these cars and it was always special to ride in them, I just felt to SMALL! It's sad that the quality dropped drastically in the 80s especially with failures like the diesel and the V8-6-4 engines. My first car was a Mercedes 300CD coupe that I was given when I graduated high school and I still have the car. In the mid 80s, there was simply no comparison in terms of quality and price - Cadillacs still looked interesting but they had those ugly digital dashes, cheap plastic wood and poor engines. I like the look of the mid 80 Eldorados and Sevilles, but the greatness of these mid 70s cars that you're reviewing was lost by that time and never regained. BUT in terms of COMFORT, nothing but nothing matched these mid 70s Cadillacs. Also, things like climate control and power options were far ahead of anything Europe was doing at the time. I love the build quality and looks of my 85 Mercedes but the memory of being swallowed and comforted by a 76 Eldorado was unique and memorable! I watched the video of the red convertible first and realize that this car really does look much nicer as a convertible. The styling of this Eldorado is certainly unique and massive, but overall I think the shape is very conducive to a convertible. ANYWAY, you must be having a blast driving these, especially if you live in a rural area. ENJOY and keep sharing!

And I agree, the Germans were definitely building cars of far superior quality in the 80's (And probably 70's too). That's awesome that you still have your first car which is a Mercedes. What year is the car? And yes, these 70's cars are the most comfortable I've ever been in. It really is incredible! And good point, I agree that the Eldorado looks best as a convertible. I really like the lines on those better!
