Oh, very true Tyler 🙂👍 Thanks for the comment. Something came apart in the transfer case and the truck kicks in-and-out of 4x4 now 😬 I was told the issue by the previous owner but it didn't act up at first. I'll have to address this eventually. Been taking time from videos to clean up the property and make it easier to make videos in a timely manner. At least that's the plan 🔧🔩 I hope you're doing well my friend. Take care and happy wrenching

We had a pair of F500 (I think) 4x4 trucks at the department I was with back in the eighties. The trucks were from 1966 and 1968, and had originally been put into service as brush trucks, complete with PTO-powered "pump-and-roll" front-mounted pumps. By the time I arrived there, we were using them more as engines than brush trucks. I knew how to drive them, but never really learned the two-lever transfer case setups they had. We had other "beasts of brush" by then to take off road.

The 391 has a forged crank, a higher nickel content block with thicker sleeves and it also has sodium-filled exhaust valves. I had also read that replacement 428 Cobra Jet blocks were bored out 391 blocks. One of the ways you can tell it's a 391 block is it has a mirror image 105 at the front of the driver side cylinder Bank.

This very year of Ford I worked for a very dear friend working my way through college that had one as a dump truck. It was the most reliable in his fleet for hauling and pulling heavy equipment off road. It wasn't a four wheel drive but with a good set of chains I took it everywhere. Best of luck with your project.

391 has a forged crank and ten thousandths more stroke, thus 391 instead of 390. Heads are different and a few other details to make the 391 an industrial version of the 390. I have an F750 crane truck with air brakes and 47k original miles for picking up logs for my mill. I wanted 4 wheel drive but they are rare birds. Tonka toys.

I owned a 1979 model same set up with a dump bed. Loved it had big plans for a camper setup , changes I had planned were hydraulic disc brakes , 460 stroker with 5 speed od, brownie box between transmission and transfer case . Problem I had was thinking who's coming to get me out when I get the beast stuck ? Then lost interest. A cummins swap would be perfect , might get better than 6mpg ,

My Dad bought a 79 F600 brand new, with a navy blue cab and white grill, with a crimson red grain box and white pin striping and white cattle racks. I was 12 years old and I drove it down a gravel road by our farm, brand new, in Alberta looking just over the dash under the steering wheel. We're Canadian but Dad was also a proud American from NY state and a USAAF veteran.

Years ago my Dad bought an FWD snowplow from a neighbor. If I remember correctly it had been used to clear the runways on a military base in the U.P of Michigan. It came with a 12' or bigger straight blade and a massive V plow. It had 14.00x20 24 ply tires on it and had two concrete weights on the back one was 4'x4'x6' and another that was 2'x4'x6'. The tires on that truck were so heavily built that even with all the air let out they still were fully "up" even with those concrete weights on there. The truck was I believe a 1937 and had been changed from the original Hercules straight 6 to a Cummins straight 6. It had been sitting for at least 10 years when we bought it. Dad checked the fluids and the air cleaner then put a battery on it and sent a birds nest about 30' into the air with it. That thing was amazing when it came to moving snow. It had a 4 speed with a 2 speed transfer case and which we left in high. It would push a foot of snow like it wasn't there. We bought it because we lived down a county road which the county didn't take care of at all. They wouldn't even send a bus to come pick me up for school instead I had to walk just over a mile and a quarter to the highway to grab the bus and this being Wisconsin it gets cold occasionally. We used that for plowing until we picked up an old Adams grader and started using that instead. Dad turned that FWD into a 4wd tractor with a 10 speed transmission.

@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
OH WOW! I bet that ole FWD was a *beast!* It would be sooo cool to see pictures of it. My family sadly never took pictures of the machines that were around when I was a kid. Sounds like that truck served your family well! The ole road grader came in handy too I bet. Pretty neat how someone swapped a Cummins into it. Thanks for the view and kind comment my friend :)

I have the 1978 f150 ranger xlt.... My dad's best friend worked at ford and walked through the factory in 1978 and built his own truck with all new parts. 6 months after getting his truck it was tboned and my dad and his friend fixed the frame and put a flat bed steel bed on the ford. We still have this truck it had a factory 400 in it but with 989,784.6? Ish miles on her the old girl bit the dust and went to the farm. So new 390 big block and she is still rolling hard on down the road all these years later. Love my ford it's the only ford I will ever not sale and it's my treasure 😍. Only ford I love I will work on her all day long . But I am a Chevy fan for the last part unless it comes to diesel then it's a Dodge game only unless we talking old truck

Sounds halfway decent! Believe it or not, Ford started producing F600 4x4 in house around '71/'72. Deciphering your VIN will tell you if it was a factory option or not. A lot were still sent out to an upfitter though. Looks like you've got a MICO Lock for your brakes too. Those are quite handy for winching applications.

Just subscribed and started on some of your playlist. You bring on some nice rigs, as I am partial to them.... I'm 73 so fit in better. I never really liked the big international engine but that 345 was a workhorse where the 392 would start losing water.... good for water pump issues as the neck was a bit higher on them and a air pocket and problems. They all started on a twist of a key and never failed work real hard for me

Thank you for the kind comment Morgan! :) I really appreciate that. Oh yeah, the 345 is a great engine. We had a flatbed dump when I was a kid. It had the 345 and it *never* failed to start. Even in the freezing cold, few revolutions and it would fire. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Take care and be safe out there!

god those tires are huge! That thing definitely needs a 7.3L Powerstroke swap and maybe an Allison trans while you're at it. I know that's what I'd want to do with it, but then here in California a 20 year old diesel doesn't have to be smogged whereas a 1976 or new gas engine always does so ditching the 170hp gas engine for a 325+hp diesel that will also get better mileage and not have to be smogged is a no-brainer. The Allison would just be useful to not have to deal with the clutch which I know is really high up in those trucks. (I had a 76 F100 smog and clutch is why I don't anymore)

@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE depends on if you go with a later electronically controlled one or an earlier mechanical one. I personally would get the stuff from Gale Banks to go with the electronic one because variable vain turbos are great and so is being able to control just how much fuel you are putting in at any given time. Banks also makes TONS of aftermarket goodies for those engines that with the turn of a knob you can massively increase the power and then turn it right back down. Add to that his transmission controller and you'll have a great tow rig that can also fry the tires at will whenever you want. :D It is expensive but it's well worth it in my eyes.. There's no gas engine with that kind of versatility. Also with Banks products there's not going to be massive black smoke. (he's proven time and again that that's just a waste of fuel)

391 vs. 390 - The 391 has a forged crankshaft with a bigger snout for running pto’s & the like. Cylinder heads are different. Exhaust gas crossover is in the center and not offset like the 390. So the intake manifold is different. And the exhaust manifolds are different. Stellite valve seats. Block is high-nickel and has about 25 pounds of extra bulk around the bearing webs. So even though the motors share basic geometry they are vastly different. I have heard of guys turning the snout down and using it in hi-po applications but it seems unlikely. It’s not as if the cast cranks are prone to breakage. You make me want to work on my ‘79 F600. Just a little.

@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE If I remember right the 331, 361, and 391 had some provisions for mounting an air brake compressor on them. I seem to remember a guy coming into our shop who was trying to swap a 390 in one that was originally a 391. He ended up doing some hack work to the belt drive, compressor mounting and oil supply and drain to the compressor. He came in for a state inspection when he finished the job and I remember the engine having a strange vibration due to whatever he had to do with the balancer/sheaves to make the belt drive for the compressor work. The 390 was an FE,the 391 was an FT.There are quite a bit of differences.In the beginning Ford Motor Company classified engine groups by the vehicle line they were intended for.FE was basically Ford cars,Edsel cars.FT was Ford Truck,There were MEL Mercury Edsel Lincoln,but long story short the FT was basically a medium duty TRUCK engine.I believe the FT(sourced from HP books by Steve Christ)"FT big blocks were installed I medium and heavy duty trucks.All FT blocks are cast of high grade alloy iron …...Most blocks are strengthened in the crank support area with much thicker main bearing caps and webs....".Now the FE and FT were offered with either cast or forged cranks...depending on which displacement and load rating.Some FT engines came with 4 piston rings just to complicate things a little more.By the way I would love to have that truck,like the video and will check out more.
