We had two mid 70s C-65s with Knapheid bodies on the farm when I was growing up. 427 gas engines, 5/2 trans/rear end with a cheater axle and 5 something gear ratio. Tough and reliable trucks they were. They weren't fast by any means but they weren't meant to be. They were a blast to drive (when I was a teenager lol), and always got the job done. I'll never admit how much we overloaded those poor trucks but they always came back for more.

Still alot of these being used today...on logging and farms etc. Good simple trucks.

The first vehicle of any kind I ever drove was a 65 series when I was 9y/o in the hayfield. I had a cold,and my uncle was annoyed that I wasn't bunching bales fast enough,so he figured I could 'at least handle moving the truck'. Oh yeah...I drive trucks to this day. I realized....Why work when you can drive. (Thanks Uncke Donald!)😉😅

I know where there's a C-65 with a 24' van body that still gets used occasionally as a city delivery truck. It's whipped but still roadworthy.

They had a pretty rugged and handsome body style, like. Body wise, they were an upscaled Sierra.

Simple, robust trucks! A LOT of the C60 and larger are STILL working today...39-years later! THIS is what the U.S. should STILL be building, not these 'wanna-be cars' they try to sell now (for $110k)...Few realize, trucks like that red stake-side (in this video) could be BOUGHT NEW for less than $10k back then (with gas engine)! Real shame...

Interesting views of late 70's Detroit. I drove a C65 Chevy 26 foot stake truck around those same streets in those days.

70s TRUCK FAN I have a 1975 Peterbilt 359, bought it brand new in 1974 and I’m still driving it today, 45 years after I started. It had a 400 Cummins and a 10 speed from the start and everything was built from the best material. I swapped it to a series 60 Detroit in 1986 and it is still in the truck at 2.6 million miles. Just bought a 2016 W900 as a second truck and you wouldn’t believe how much cheaper it’s made than the 359. I gave 176,000$ for that truck, unbelievable that they build cheap, sell expensive.

1980 was the first year the Detroit Diesel "Fuel Pincher" 8.2L four-cycle diesel engine appeared, to replace at mid-year the legendary two-cycle 4-53T. And while the Cummins VT-225 (a variation of the "Triple Nickel") was listed alongside the Cat 3208 as being available on all 7000s with the Top Kick hood, I suspect none were actually specified with this other V-8 diesel engine.

Jeremy Lavoie you're right that size truck should have at the least 6v53t for the smaller weights then a 6v92t and once they experienced that engine no one would request another 8.2 bad name for Detroit,3208 throw away engine SORRY guys it's the truth

I'm pretty sure this isn't 1978...the TopKick model wasn't introduced until the 1980 model year. Might be a late '79 promo talking about the upcoming '80 models...

My, farther works for a Lumberyard and they just sold thire 1993 GMC Topkick. The thing was a best. For a 26 year old truck. It had like rust on it. And it was the Third strongest, only getting beaten by the two Macks, and was the biggest truck that could turn tight. Unfortunately some of the new drivers were not driving it because of the 6speed manual and no ac. And the two new Issue Trucks with Ac and an atomic transmission. The newer drivers took them for run instead of 19, the topkick. And after a year of almost no runs. Mine you this truck was used almost 3 to 4 times a day. It was sold in September of 2019. The two new trucks even combine cant haul as much weight as 19, 19 had a 14ft bed but it hauled alot of 18 foot heavy stuff and she was not struggling. But the two new ones, with 16ft and 18ft can haul and when you put heavy stuff on the 16ft bed one it hauls like its hauling 1 or 2 steel beams. And they both have rust on them and they are only 2 years old.

Stellite exhaust valves and rotocoil exhaust valve rotators? Been working on cars for 50 years and never heard anything like that. Stellite exhaust valves - hard coated stainless steel exhaust valves (very hard). Rotocoil exhaust valve rotators - causes a small and incremental rotation of the valve every time the rocker arm presses against the valve stem to prevent hot spots from burning valve. Learn something new each day!

how long did this body style last? There is a company that runs tons of these for moving fruit and what's the difference between the Topkick and the Brigader? I'm assuming top kick is medium duty while the Brigader is heavy duty.

Just look at the square body cab design, it spells 1973, of course the Top Kick front end came some 6 years later. Even the Brigadier which came around 78 is based on the H & J 7500-9500 series trucks that were first introduced in 1966.

Can anyone help me and tell me where can I found sierra engine 1978 new one or at least clean ?? Plz
@skeetersaurus62496 жыл бұрын
What kind of Sierra engine are you searching for? What class of vehicle is it? I mean, you could get most-anything in the C-65's of that era from the 225 six-cylinder all the way up to the 427-Big Block, and several diesels (as the video shows). If you're asking about just getting a 'generic pre-89' Chevy engine...I'd probably call Jasper Engines...while they do NOT have 'new' ones, they are a major corporation, rebuild with original parts, guarantee for 12,000 miles, and produce an EXCELLENT rebuild engine for truck restorations, at a decent price.
