Beautiful machine, running great. I love how the old machines like this really allow you to hear each stroke of the agitation. And it'll just agitate away, doesn't ever care about load size. Just does a great job every time. I wouldn't expect anything less. And what a trooper standing there the entire time! I set mine up on the tripod.

tallboyyyy Yeah, that was another thing I was going to mention! Or threw error codes. New washing machines should be called "washing assistants". Sometimes they help, other times they need it. Kind of like Siri or Alexa, when they can't find anything, they'll search the web for you and maybe one of those will help some. Other times they just has the answer.

Nothing like a real washer that actually wash clothes. None of that load sensing high efficiency garbage. 2 hours to wash one load just for your clothes to still be dirty. This was the type of washer I wanted when I decided to buy a new earlier this year. After much research I end up getting a speed queen awn542. Remind me so much of this classic machine. Right down to the sound and the spin drain. Awesome machine.

A superb machine from the days when we made top quality machines that washed like a beast and lasted for decades. I have a 1977 GE Filter Flo that's still going as well. Parts can still be gotten from other online appliance houses as well as Ebay, I got a ton of spare parts for my GE off ebay and much cheaper than factory prices too - most all off ebay.

Used appliance stores everywhere should make it a priority to find & buy as many of these old-style Maytag w/d's that they can find to rebuild/recondition them to sell. Much better than the new Whirl-Tags that are nothing but plastic junk!

lmao! True! But, my question is how does it agitate so well despite it not having fins to drag the clothes. In any which case. God bless this washer.
@kirkrivas81727 жыл бұрын
the fins on the base of the agitator push water and clothes up the side walls of the tub, then clothes float to the top and get sucked down towards the center of the tub. Not as effective as the augur style whirlpool agitator but still decent enough. This agitator has less moving parts than the old school whirlpool one.
@jhomrich897 жыл бұрын
the argument to be made here and with modern speed queens is less to go wrong with it many machines for years had this style of agitator and work very well
@borregoimages81177 жыл бұрын
Jon Homrich Yeah, at one point this week we had many in the back in my store we hauled away when we delivered the new set. If it wasn't so dang cold I'd film em in operation. But, in any which case they perform well nonetheless.

I have a 1992 Maytag washer which is a white agitator that looks like this one, the ones they had right before they built the dependable care machines and it has fins perturding from the side of it to give it a nice rollover and mine is also short strokes unlike this machine. I've never had any issues of clothes not being cleaned well with it.

Love these older Maytags, with the blue powerfin agitator. What doesn’t make sense to me is Speed Queen and this model at least gave a full long spray rinse after the main wash before the rinse cycle, but on the Whirlpool direct drives they only spray rinsed during the final spin meaning softener will get rinsed right away if added, it just doesn’t make any sense to me I love my direct drive and all but that makes zero sense to put the spray rinse there of all times when many other brands put it where it made the most sense, during the first spin before the rinse cycle.

do you know that the lint filter is in the center of the agitator. If you pull it up you can clean it out, many people don't realize that all Maytags have the lint filter built into the agitator and that it should be cleaned after each load. Great machine I have one too.

Are these older machines harder to find parts for? I may have a chance to pick one of these up. It runs but does not drain all the time; says the current owner. does anyone know what that problem with drainage might be?
@tallboyyyy4 жыл бұрын
Parts are still available for these machines because they were made until the mid 90's. The drain problem could be as simple as a worn or loose pump belt or as serious as a worn out pump. When I say serious I don't mean expensive or difficult to replace. These machines are very easy to service yourself. There are all kinds of videos on You Tube showing step by step directions on how to do the most common repairs. If it's a similar machine to mine then look for "two belt Maytag washer" repair videos. Here's a video showing how to replace and adjust the tension on the belts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYbNdIeGl7Nrf68 And this is a good video on replacing the pump. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6rTlJ-GicmmrbM It would be a good idea before ordering a new pump, if that is what you think the problem is, to just take the hose that comes from the tub to the pump off and check it to make sure that something like a sock hasn't gotten sucked up into it blocking it. You might also want to take the other end of the hose off from the bottom of the tub to make sure nothing is blocking the drain on the tub side that hasn't actually gotten sucked into the hose. Then you would just need to remove the item and put it back together. My money would be on a loose worn out belt. If you need to replace the pump belt I would go ahead and do the transmission belt at the same time. What the guy says in the second video about using the proper manufacturer made belts is true. They aren't a common size and the transmission belt is cloth covered so it can act like a clutch when going into spin mode.

How did you get it to keep running when you open the lid?

It's an old fashioned Maytag washing machine and it's analog instead of digital and there's no error codes required. I hope they have these in Home depot, Menards, Best Buy, or H.H. Gregg. Do any stores carry these old model appliances?
@paulk99854 жыл бұрын
I think the closest you will find to analog is Speed Queen. I have a set of Maytag w/d from 1984. They are great. Hope they keep running, because I dread replacing them and not sure if they might nickel and dime me when issues begin. I will hold my breath until then.

Unfortunate that appliance manufacturers stopped making washing machines like that many years ago. With ONE exception.... the Speed Queen "classic" washer.... model: TC5
@tallboyyyy Жыл бұрын
I don't entirely blame manufacturers though they certainly have a portion of the blame, I also blame the federal government, specifically the Department of Energy for micromanaging private industry by dictating how much water it can use, how much electricity it can use etc. etc. Add to that rampant cost cutting by manufacturers and you end up with appliances that are junk right out of the box. The DOE standards are about to get worse. Manufacturers have said that as bad as appliances are today, with the new standards the DOE is forcing on them consumers are going to end up with appliances that simply can't do the job they are intended to do. I'm glad I have several vintage machines.

Hi This is Mikey, I really Like to watch the washing machine videos, so if you would mind like if you do a load of delicate clothes in your 1978 Maytag washer?
@tallboyyyy9 жыл бұрын
+Mikey Carson Hi Mikey, glad you like the video. I don't really have much to wash on a delicate cycle. The delicate cycle on this machine agitates for a couple minutes then stops and just soaks the clothes for about 8 minutes then spins and rinses and spins again. 8 minutes of the machine doing basically nothing would make a kind of boring video. I do plan on another video of things like t shirts that will roll over faster and better show the wash action.
