My grandfather used to have a yellow '77 Hilux like this one but with the 1600 engine and a column shift which appeared to be the H-pattern flipped upside down, but once you get used to it, it is pure joy to shift! The first gear was extra low and the truck (or bakkie as we call it) would easily spin on tarmac. It could exceed 120 km/h easily on a level road. I drove it with a heavy foot compared to how my grand dad did and the overrun would make a loud trumpet sound during gear changes! The day my grand dad sold it, I realized the accelerator cable was not even fully adjusted! :(

Bruh I can assure you as an American and the owner of a 77 sr5 longbed hilux , we pronounce things however the fuck we want, even if we know the real pronunciation we don't give a fuck and will say it wrong all day if we feel like it , plus in American English a hilux is also a commonly known shape. Pronounced heel-lux a fucking word we have heard before. also there's no one around to correct us but this is the response you'll usually get when you try 😆 I've never called my own 77 anything but a pickup or if im being specific an sr5 but hi-lux ima start using that one so I can tell people it stands for high luxury 🤣 thanks dude
