Even with the horrible Finish, 1979 was a fun year!!! We had the Cy Young winner and Home Run King. It was also my first game ever on 7/21/79.

Scott was more of a finesse pitcher - tried to power a fastball in on the quick hands of prime Kingman...didn't work.

Mr. Foote was traded to the New York Yankees on April 27th, 1981, the day I was born. My father being a lifelong Yankees fan (and having raised me as one, too, of course) the transaction must have stood out to him, because he gave me three 1983 Topps Barry Foote cards (#697) as a gift for my second birthday. They're the first baseball cards I ever owned, and were displayed prominently in my boyhood bedroom. Of course, I was too young to realize that the Yankees had given him his release on the final day of Spring Training that year & he had never actually played a game for the '83 Yanks (or any other Major League team again), but it didn't matter a lick to me. I was so fascinated by all the "armor" he's wearing on the card (and his epic mustache & curly hair beneath his batting helmet in the inset profile photo in the lower right of the card) that it began a lifelong obsession with the sport that has waxed & waned at different times, but never disappeared. I even played catcher on my little league teams in emulation of him! It's really too bad he was so hampered by injuries that his career ended prematurely, because he came into the Bronx with a bang: a home run in his first at-bat & five in his first seven games with them. Anyway, if you get the chance to let your cousin know, tell him that he was a huge influence on my life from the very start & his card will always be the most valuable one I ever own.

This is also random - but tell Barry that his home run thru the window is probably my first certain memory as a human...I've dated it and it's either 1, 2, 3...we were big Cub fans and I learned "Kong" right after Momma and Dadda..."Barry Foote" was top 20 words I learned...lol - as you can see, we had our priorities straight. But I always remember asking "When is Barry Foote up?" cause us this homerun...I thought he'd break a window every time. Thanks - a fine ball player in an old school era of hard nose dudes...the 79 Cubs were the most fun .500 team ever imho - Billy Buck, Kong, Barry, etc
