I think its because of the guy making this, he has no passion or understanding and lacks REAL enthusiasm. Like when the owner said he's running 16PSI boost, he didn't bat an eye, or when the owner said he takes it to the track, why didn't he ask what kind of #'s he was putting up or when the owner said he had it beefed up some, no questions asked. He should watch a few jay leno's garage episodes and learn to not rush this process like this was an everyday car, but a extremely rare classic.

Al of those early turbo cars seem to be relatively rare. A guy in our Buick Club of America Chapter has a 1978 LeSabre turbo coupe and it is the only one in the club nation wide! Another rare turbo car is the 1982 Buick Grand National. They only made 202 Grand Nationals in 1982, and most of those had a 350;4-barrel engine, with reportedly only 25 having the turbo V-6 that first year. Those 1982 Grand Nationals were very pretty Cars, painted silver instead of the Darth Vader black of the 1984 and up Grand Nationals. There was no Grand National in 1983. Thanks Lou, for this great car story about this super rare turbo Buick. I have never seen one of these in person.

I owned a 1980 Chevy Monte Carlo that had a 4.3 V6 turbo. Two tone Fire red/ burgundy,T-tops, console etc.
@fredanddebramacdonald24455 жыл бұрын
Yes, another rare car! That 4.3 liter was basically a 350 minus two cylinders. It was made famous in trucks like the GMC Syclone and I think some were in special editions of the Pontiac TransAm. There were also some MonteCarlos with the 3.8 Buick V-6 engine.
@fredanddebramacdonald24455 жыл бұрын

Threw a rod the next. Some high school kid rebuilt the motor in my driveway. When everything worked (which wasn't often), the car hauled ass. Loved filling the rear air shocks every Friday night at the gas station. Was very comfortable and well built. One car review said "The lump in the hood will put a lump on your throat". In my case, the lump in the hood took the lump out of my wallet. Still great memories.

That LeSabre Grand National was basically a cosmetic package for looks, as only a naturally aspirated engine was available. The transaxles in these cars would not hold together with a turbocharged engine, so the turbocharged was not offered in production cars.
@blk7gxn5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lou and Elizabeth! In 1986 ( NOT 1988) they made a Buick Lesabre Grand National to qualify the new body style for NASCAR. They made a total of 117 of which 112 were sold to the public, 5 were turbocharged and never released as prototypes. Out of the 112 sold to the public 20 were run at the Daytona as a sprint promotional thing. Lots of really neat historic value on these cars!

My First Car! Thank you so much for this video. I didn't have the turbo coupe however I had a 1978 Century green on green 2 door coupe. I owned the car in the late 80's, and mine was not at all stock. I had a engine swap to a modified 350 Olds -torquey SOB it hauled some serious ass. Ugly as hell, not to mention some body damage (front fender) it was the perfect sleeper. Blacked out grill, bumpers and rims, set of auxiliary fog lights mounted on top center front bumper. I had a surprisingly huge set of Tiger Paw truck tires tucked up inside those rear fender wells. I beat everything car in town except one. I started with a set of original 273 gears the top end was scary fast. One day I pulled up next to a brand new red Porsche 944, that owner was so proud! We had a 5+ mile straight highway ahead, I let him take the lead, it was the gentleman thing to do! About 135 mph he started to either loose steam or nerve, I pulled into the passing lane and and walked by him right around 145+. Perhaps one of the more stupidest things I ever did, but the look on his face was well worth it. I grew up in a racecar garage, with the circumference of those tires, 273 gears, 1 to 1 final drive @ 5000 rpm we calculated I could do 160 in that car. I had her pegged wide open probably more than a dozen times. I drove that car with open headers for the last 3-4 months, I carried the broken exhaust pieces in the trunk just in case. I expected a fix-it ticket at any time, but strangely enough the only time I got pulled over I showed him the exhaust in the trunk and said it just fell off.... he let me go. He probably thought no one in their right mind would purposely drive a car around that loud....

Pontiac, you guys slip some true 400 ci Pontiac V8s into some Trans Ams. Buick, you guys keep looking into that turbo thingy, etc. etc." Surprising the low production numbers because it seems like such a practical performance car for the time. I don't know what became of the car after they had moved away. In a way I blame that car for getting me hooked on Buick cars from a young age as I had a '77 Regal at the time. When college finished up and I got myself together I bought an '86 GN brand new followed years later with an '08 LaCrosse Super and currently a '14 Regal GS. The production number seems a little low but you have the remember that Buick had 3 more Turbo cars in its stable at the time (Riv, LeSabre, Regal). Very nice & truly rare! Growing up, a guy in our neighborhood had a gray Century like the one in the buyers guide, but no turbo. He told his son to save up his allowance money & they would then go "buy" a turbo for it.... I don't think he ever got one, but his son had plenty of $ saved up for college.

Mark is right... That body style was available for only 2 years (1978-79) and was axed by GM because sales were 'rather disappointing'. Two decades later, a GM executive said in an interview with Car and Driver magazine, 'at least they should have been hatchbacks' !

@@borromeo50 I very much remember this body style ( Shared with Oldsmobile coupe ( 442) and sedan and yes it was Not very well received .I was 14 when the '78's came out and we had a 4 door Buick century as our car for driver's education in High school I remember the kids didn't like the look , ( The Driver instructor did ) but desite the differences of opinions it was comfortable and drove smoothly ( Had a 231 cu in V6) 3.8 and well I thought it was different and unique ,and kind of interesting.
