The rest of the east Coast was getting ready for a hard-core Snow Blizzard.

Back when the Clash meant something. Also those were real drivers. The cars were big, fast, heavy, and hard to drive. If you won a race , you earned it.

The very first clash race ever. I am hoping the clash returns to Daytona in the future.

The front stretch and grandstands were beautiful back then... also, commentators were professional and phenomenal, not catering to kids with stupidity.

Both feet to the floor...... Buddy Baker (lol) Buddy had 'em covered all week - got the ignition wet before the 500 and they failed to sort it out during the race. When they checked the car at the shop on Monday after switching to the back-up ignition it fired right up and ran perfect. Same car won the 1980 Daytona 500 - aka the Grey Ghost

That is supposedly a true story...the mechanic plugged back in the bad ignition in his haste. It fired up when they got it to the shop after the 500. Unbelievable....I think he was actually faster in 79 than when he won in 80.

@@Stiitchjones More guys had Olds 442s in 1980 - pretty much everyone running a GM had the Olds for the 500

so tandem drafting has been going on for longer than we thought...

Yep and the Restrictor plate is still about a decade away at this point

Watch some of this channel’s older videos. Drafting has been going on since the beginning of speedway racing.

Not the same thing - the most recent "tandem" racing required locking bumpers - this is just a tight 2 car draft - had been around since 1959 when the track opened.

@@jimbosc Yep! And that strategy of drafting played a prominent role with Junior Johnson's victory at the 1960 Daytona 500.

Look at how small that pack is. That record was broken in 2020, when 6 cars finished the race

for the Clash? or for a full length Daytona race? There were only 9 cars in this race.

awesome qualifying method. this is what the Busch Clash should still be. all the pole winners of the previous season as well as previous Clash winners and not every single driver in the entire field.

How did JD actually actually qualify for this race, wasn’t he always a back marker?
@LeoA2600 Жыл бұрын
He wasn't always the back marker that 1980's and early 90's fans remember. Occasional top 5's and semi regular top 10's in the late 1960's and throughout the 70's. He finished in 11th place in the driver's championship in 1978 and won the pole at the Fall Dover race in what perhaps was the highlight of his career, which made him one of 9 drivers eligible for the inaugural Busch Clash.
@billponder5182 Жыл бұрын
JD McDuffie qualified on McCre ary tires at Dover Delaware the previous fall. Those tires were much faster. Starting money for the clash was 15 k..
@blackpagan10011 ай бұрын
@@LeoA2600 Thanks for that. Always felt kinda bad for him. Saw the short film Nascar did on him, clearly had the passion and the skill just never seemed to get the backing (cash) he needed! But, I imagine there were many similar drivers that never got to his level.
