It's This Old Outboard. 1979 55hp Evinrude Outboard. The Joe Reeves WOT Timing Procedure pt. 2. I wasn't sure it worked the first time I tried it, just based on the position of the adjusting screw, but now after getting the New WOT Adjustment Screw Stop Bumper I'm pretty sure it did. Also, Synchronizing the Linkage. Water Pump, New Impeller Installed and the Gearcase installed. And Fired it up!

The reason I like your channel is that you routinely experience the issues I do but the difference is that you know a lot more than I do. I usually give up a big challenge since I do not want to screw it up more. Anyway thanks for your perseverance, gives me courage to tear down further to get at the real problem. Have a great day!

40hp has more low end grunt, and ill bet top speed is similar. 40hp is prop-shaft rated, 55 is rated at the powerhead. 40hp put out about 47hp at the head, 55 put out about 51-53hp but at a higher rpm.

as i said before, guy had the thottle cable and stop incorrectly adjusted! and get a factory manual man! those aftermarket ones are horrible. thanks for the video looking good! don't worry were these linkages are as long as idle timing is correct and WOT timing is correct, you are good. what was idle timing with the cam roller and throttle cam mark aligned? if its high or low, then you adjust the throttle cam adjuster. that way you know exactly were it was supposed to be!

I was thinking way back about doing a timing, link and sync video on my 60hp mercury. My service manual shows all the steps for setup without hitting the water. The shop I took it to said everything was set right except the carbs but I left them all at 1 1/4 turn out for them to set. The book said to set them one at a time to a set rpm. I didn't have a test rpm tool for it. Knowing how I set it I'll check it again to see if they changed any settings? Then I'll know if my settings per book are correct. I will do this video next spring. I'll buy a test tach off ebay that has correct readings for mercury outboard motors 3 cylinder 2 stroke

The shop set the carbs for me but from what I have read 2 strokes you go by the lean rich setting. Meaning the book setting is 1 1/4 turn out on the air fuel mix screw. I haven't checked by turning each carb screw in to seat to see if they changed them? if so will write down each one where at so I have it then turn each one back to where it was set. I'll do a video to share this fall or during the winter when I'm done fishing.

Got a question for u. Do you set the cam up first with the roller hitting the mark correctly Then, you set the timer base under the fly wheel and lock it in at 15 degrees using the timing light. Finally, set the wot stop when you know it is on 15 degrees. Will the idle be correct when you have the wot set at 15 degrees? By the way I'm enjoying your channel. Subscribed :)

Well first of all I've been watching your KZbin videos for quite some time but as I started out with a four horsepower Evinrude which was in buckets galore and it was off of a sailboat for a trolling motor I guess I got it together in two and a half hours or actually three but that was the start of a chain of event it went from a four horse to a six horse from 6 horse to a 14 horse 14 horse to a 15 horse 15 to a 20 then 25 30 35 and so on but what's funny is you've been working on 25 horse Johnson or Evinrude for quite some time and without further I do that's what I continue to work on is either 25 30 35 and now I'm watching this video about a 55 Evinrude well I've got the 50 horse Johnson which was the same motor but it's a 73 it was the first or 7273 what's that first electronic ignition or whatever it was it has the terminal block in it that powers everything supposed to be able to power itself but I don't know what they were talking about when he said that or I have it come across what that specifies runs on its own I guess the magneto and stator is supposed to keep that engine running on its own without battery power supply but anyway it's just funny cuz we seem to work on the same motors around about the same time and got the same unorthodox way of working on hahaha LOL that's supposed to be funny but saying in all good spirits continue on sir you're most impressive on how you do things and get things done even though sometimes there's a little bit different ways that I would do it but it all comes out good thank you

whould you know why my linkage right under the flywheel keep breaking as in ripping the little plastic sockets completley off after i run it awhile ive replaced it twice now and keeps breaking
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. First thing that comes to mind is the armature plate under the flywheel. If its not floating freely its gonna wear everything out. Disconnect the linkage and move it back and forth by hand, it should move smooth with no effort. If its stiff you'll have to take it apart, clean it up, and possibly replace the support plate bearing. It's a big plastic ring and they wear out. I find a lot of outboards that are just caked with grease, and that grease gets hard as a rock over time. The only other thing that comes to mind is the wiring/harness coming from under the flywheel. Make sure it has enough slack to move with the plate, if its getting hung up its gonna put a strain on those linkage parts. That's all I can think of, curious to know what you find out. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I know we had talked props and top speeds with our 40s and the. 12x15 prop and we were close on speed but my boat is same size roughly but I am way heavier than you. I put my 11.75x17 and I can tell it will not run as high of an rpm (gladly, because the last few hundred RPMs didn't seem to change my speed any with the 12x15). I tried the 17 pitch and I know I am getting more speed per rpm, but not able to get it to wind as tight. Always heard these engines were more torque than HP, so that's fine by me. I am gonna try those 55 carbs on the 40 and I will let you know how it works out works out good or bad if you don't beat me to the punch. I forgot to take my phone or GPS last trip out and it was frigid and I didn't want to get wet again. Here in TN this time of year it's either cold and dry or wet and warm. Back yard is so soggy I have to use 4x4 to move the boat and you need waterproof cleats to keep from falling on your tail and I can't risk it at my size in this red clay. Take care

@@keithconrad4892 Hey. Don't know nothing about facetime! Hahaha! It's a 78, I think your best bet is to pick up an OMC manual Specific to your year/model like I did on the 79. Look on ebay for a good used manual. It will save you time & money!!! Sounds like your link & sync may be off and that can be a real pain in the azz! The manual will give everything you need to know for setting up timing / linkage & synchronization. You'll need this information for it to run properly. Plus, There's a great troubleshooting section! Sure beats spending hours on outboard forums. If I had the service manual for my 79 it might help, and I could walk you through it but I don't. Gave it to the guy who bought the motor. Get the manual, give me a holler back if you still have problems we'll see if we can figure it out! Thanks again !
