40hp has more low end grunt, and ill bet top speed is similar. 40hp is prop-shaft rated, 55 is rated at the powerhead. 40hp put out about 47hp at the head, 55 put out about 51-53hp but at a higher rpm.

I was thinking way back about doing a timing, link and sync video on my 60hp mercury. My service manual shows all the steps for setup without hitting the water. The shop I took it to said everything was set right except the carbs but I left them all at 1 1/4 turn out for them to set. The book said to set them one at a time to a set rpm. I didn't have a test rpm tool for it. Knowing how I set it I'll check it again to see if they changed any settings? Then I'll know if my settings per book are correct. I will do this video next spring. I'll buy a test tach off ebay that has correct readings for mercury outboard motors 3 cylinder 2 stroke

Were your carb settings right?
@TimsWorkshopTJY3 жыл бұрын
The shop set the carbs for me but from what I have read 2 strokes you go by the lean rich setting. Meaning the book setting is 1 1/4 turn out on the air fuel mix screw. I haven't checked by turning each carb screw in to seat to see if they changed them? if so will write down each one where at so I have it then turn each one back to where it was set. I'll do a video to share this fall or during the winter when I'm done fishing.

whould you know why my linkage right under the flywheel keep breaking as in ripping the little plastic sockets completley off after i run it awhile ive replaced it twice now and keeps breaking
@THISOLDOUTBOARD13 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. First thing that comes to mind is the armature plate under the flywheel. If its not floating freely its gonna wear everything out. Disconnect the linkage and move it back and forth by hand, it should move smooth with no effort. If its stiff you'll have to take it apart, clean it up, and possibly replace the support plate bearing. It's a big plastic ring and they wear out. I find a lot of outboards that are just caked with grease, and that grease gets hard as a rock over time. The only other thing that comes to mind is the wiring/harness coming from under the flywheel. Make sure it has enough slack to move with the plate, if its getting hung up its gonna put a strain on those linkage parts. That's all I can think of, curious to know what you find out. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I know we had talked props and top speeds with our 40s and the. 12x15 prop and we were close on speed but my boat is same size roughly but I am way heavier than you. I put my 11.75x17 and I can tell it will not run as high of an rpm (gladly, because the last few hundred RPMs didn't seem to change my speed any with the 12x15). I tried the 17 pitch and I know I am getting more speed per rpm, but not able to get it to wind as tight. Always heard these engines were more torque than HP, so that's fine by me. I am gonna try those 55 carbs on the 40 and I will let you know how it works out works out good or bad if you don't beat me to the punch. I forgot to take my phone or GPS last trip out and it was frigid and I didn't want to get wet again. Here in TN this time of year it's either cold and dry or wet and warm. Back yard is so soggy I have to use 4x4 to move the boat and you need waterproof cleats to keep from falling on your tail and I can't risk it at my size in this red clay. Take care
