Check out this review on a perfectly preserved Food Packet Long Range Patrol. One of the longest serving rations - in production for 54 years. And I can safely assume if stored properly, would last that long (or longer) too.

My wife sticks her head through the doorway into my office, "Honey, dinner is ready!" "OK, I'll be there in a second." She notices the slightly glazed look on my face as I sit down at the table, "So what have you been doing for the past 4 hours?" "Oh, just watching a guy eat old military food; MREs." There's no hint of apology in my voice. "Really? Uhmm...ok...really, 4 hours? Anyway, dinner's ready." I replace the beautiful china dish my wife has provided with a military compartmentalized tray. "I see that...let's get this out on a tray...NICE!" Each entre is placed in a compartment as I pour boiling water from my canteen-cup into a glass with freeze dried coffee. "Huh?" She looks at me with doubting eyes and moves her chair away from me slightly. "So what do you think of my biscuits? It's a new recipe!" I notice the pride in her voice, but I can't help myself. "They're a little thirst provoking!" Life with Steve1989Info.....Thanks Steve!

I have steered clear of instant for the past 20 years, but after seeing the Tasters Choice in so many of the MREs I decided I would try it just to put some back for those mornings when I ran out of my regular stuff... And I actually drink it more often than regular drip!

Haha, I only used to drink instant in the field, but I have to admit that watching MRE reviews have made me into an - coffee, instant - slurping viewer as well ( on average, some 2 Liters a day ). Funny thing is that the army-mocha beverage thing was tought to me by my late Mother. Thinking Her parents most likely got into contact with scho-ka-kola back in WWII ( got a nice stash of that too :-)

Steve, your MRE vids are absolutely incredible. Hollywood needs to do a cable tv show on you and I really mean it. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket) used to do a cable tv show about military tech back in the early 2000s, so why not you? There are other MRE reviewers such as, KiwiDude and Gundog who post excellent MRE reviews yet I think over time you have become the most popular. Yet I am thrilled that you guys collaborate, sending MRE samples to one another, building an MRE community. But do you remember the dude that pioneered the KZbin MRE review series? You guys were not the first to start a series of MRE review episodes. Back in the early 2000s it was a young guy in Yokota (Tokyo), Japan, going under the moniker, mrejap, that started it all. He found a way to purchase samples of MREs from all over the world including the former Warsaw Pact. Everyone loved his Asian-accented English but I think he did not know that and may have thought people were making fun of him. He videotaped his MRE reviews like all of you, point-of-view. He did include an odd twist, never copied elsewhere. He liked to collect plastic replica weapons and fiddle with them during his MRE reviews. He started collecting a huge audience and everyone loved him as much as we all love your MRE reviews now. Some viewers started nicknaming him, "Kato". I don't think he knew that, 'mrejap', was politically incorrect. Like you, Kato was willing to sample very old MRE foodstuffs. Of course he avoided spoiled ones. Once he paid for a box of East German, 24-hour MRE. It turned out to be nothing more than an assortment of canned foods that an East German soldier would have to lug around with him. And most of the cans were bulging, leaking, or burst long ago. Still it was educational, like your vids. Suddenly, mrejap just went off the air. He went dark. All of his MRE videos disappeared off KZbin. To this day, no one knows what happened to him. But MRE fans will always remember mrejap as the pioneer of the KZbin MRE review videos. True, other MRE vids existed at the time but those were one-off vids. No one but mrejap had a series of MRE videos like you guys today.

Much respect to you Grande Artiste. You know of Kato. Only a few of the folks here do. I spoke with him once on MREinfo years back (his screen name was actually Kato). I have a good friend in Japan who used to be buddies with him. I completely understand why mrejap deleted all his videos and went AWOL. If I could write a book.. people would understand a little better as to what is truly involved in this field. Things I cannot really talk about now. And I know Kato went through many of those very same things years back. He still loves his airsoft - it's much lower stress for him. He keeps out of the spotlight.. and as for the overall lack of respect he received in the spotlight.. I would have done the very same. He spent thousands of dollars and traveled for his rations. A true reviewer. Your comments though Grande Artiste - are truly some of my favorites out there. Thank you for your input and perspective on these videos and body of work as a whole.

Steve, are you able to tell us what actually happened to Kato? I hope Kato did not misunderstand his many fans on KZbin. I don't recall any negative or hate comments on his videos. True, there were comments about his accent but I perceived they were light-hearted from fans who actually liked him. It was hard not to giggle sometimes, like when he pronounced, peanut butter as, penis butter, or better yet, when he came up with his own unique English nomenclature, like, 'nightmare taste'. We all loved Kato just the same. If anyone can still get ahold of Kato, please tell him he has thousands of fans who still remember him and wish he would come back. In the meantime, Steve, you have been more than a worthy successor. I will shout out credit to your contemporaries who also posted well-done mre vids, guys like, KiwiDude (seems to have faded out), GunDog, and Nathan, the major players in the KZbin international MRE community. Over time, it appears you have become the most renown of the MRE experts. Myself, I've collected books on American military rations dating back to the Revolutionary War. That would make for a great historical MRE series. Much of the food would have to be just discussed or else reproduced for viewers to see.

Everyone eats so you have the food element. Also not being interested in the military would actually be a reason to watch this because your lack of knowledge would spark your curiosity even more. There's also intrigue and suspense with a touch of danger due to the age of the meals he eats. Any good movie also has these attributes. Veterans watch this for nostalgia, I know because I am one.

The tape on the bottom of the main course bags are to seal the bag shut when they cook and also said you should fill the bag up halfway with those old lrps. They used to tuck them under their arms and they'd be cooked/ warmed by the time they got where they were going. He said the 1962 version was the best. Keep up the great work, Steve!

That "weird old fudge bar" is nearly 40 years old. I'm stunned it hasn't liquified or otherwise decomposed into a vomit-inducing mush. I reckon the much older meals were packed with less of a focus on the cost of packaging. Three years guaranteed shelf life under most conditions translated to a decade or more- in this case 38 years.

Love your and Nathan's reviews. I wish I could get my hands on US MREs over here in Thailand. Stuff like these LR rations and the MCI 24hr are ideal for when the wife is out dor the night or weekend. I might have to start doing reviews on my yt channel. I am one of those weird guys that actually liked those C Rats dated 1951they gave us in 1972. I traded many a rock hard dry as sand ound cake for the ham and mother f**kers(lima beans), made em throw in a ack of Camels or Chesterfields with it.

I ate tons of these things back in the early 80s. We like to get MCIs and pick through them and put the cans in GI socks and tie them to our rucks and packed the LRRP rations in our cargo pockets(just the mains) and off we disappear into the boonies. Loved the spaghetti it was pretty good.
