Okay, it doesn’t get any bigger than this. I’ve got an impossible task ahead of me and I don’t know how I’m going to do this. For this episode, I’m tackling the story of one of my Top 3 bands of all time, Pink Floyd. They have over a quarter of a billion albums sold and a catalog of studio albums spanning nearly five decades. But their acclaim isn’t counted in albums made or sold. It’s all about the music… songs that have captivated generation after generation. And to do it in the way that they have, it truly is the greatest rock and roll story ever told… Light and dark, genius and insanity, high stakes drama, hostile takeovers, decades-long feuds, bitter firings, near breakups… and then a real break up. But mixed within the madness… some of the greatest albums ever put to vinyl. How can so much dysfunction breed so much brilliance? Find out… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another episode of our series Evolution. On this show we tell the story of a band’s career through 5 defining tracks… Except for today. That’s because the story of today’s band can’t be told in five tracks. Honestly, I don’t know if you could tell it in 10. Because they aren’t a singles band. This is a band that can only be appreciated by listening to their full album in order.
So if you haven’t guessed it today’s band is Pink Floyd. And with a catalog of 15 studio albums spanning nearly 50 years, this feels like an impossible task. So after thinking about how to do this, I’ve decided to tell Pink Floyd’s story in five defining albums instead of songs… Although I still feel like I’m shortchanging this band. But I’m going to give it a go. Along the way, I will spotlight some key tracks from each record that are most vital to its theme. Alright, let’s get into it.
So just as a way of introduction before we get into my Evolution “Album” picks… let’s talk band origins for a minute. Pink Floyd came together in London in 1965, coalescing around four musicians: singer-guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason. From 1965 to 1967, with Syd Barrett fronting the band, Pink Floyd released a couple of non-album singles: Arnold Layne and See Emily Play, as well as the album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
This opening era of Floyd was heavily influenced by Syd Barrett’s creativity and imagination and was characterized by childlike whimsy with psychedelic experimentation… For instance from Piper at the Gates of Dawn, you had songs like Bike and Interstellar Overdrive. Barrett’s indulgence in hallucinogenic substances served as the gateway to some far-out inspiration.

I was 4 years old in 1979. “Another Brick in the Wall” was the my first favorite song. Used to play the 45 over & over! As I got older I really began to appreciate how great this group truly was. Time’s intro is unreal. Absolutely love it. “Time” is one of the songs I work out to. Too many great songs to name but “See Emily Play” is an absolute trip. TIP: Don't listen to Pink Floyd late at night on long drives on dark desolate highways... 35 years ago I did just that...all of a sudden I realized I was nowhere near where I was supposed to be! I had driven 30 miles in the wrong direction while that album played with no memory of even the drive! I probably only saw 2 or 3 other vehicles on that long dark highway too. I've told that story several times over the years so as to say what can happen to the mind when you get caught up in a great album.

There wasn't a Friday night when my friends and I would not back the tailgates of our trucks to one another, break out the ponies and Crown, Acapulco Gold (they did; I never smoked it until recently), grab our girlfriends and crank DSOTM and The Wall as the moon illuminated the sugar cane fields of Devil's Swamp. That was our place to let go. Each time I go home for a visit, I head to Devil's Swamp and reminisce about the good old days. It's still there as cane fields, but the encroaching house will soon take over.

Yep. This exactly. Here in B'ham (AL) we used to have an FM Rock Station called K-99. (in a deep FM radio voice..."K-99,...we never talk while the music is playing,....K-99.") And the night they debuted "The Wall" I was there with my trusty Panasonic Cassette/FM Combo "Bang Box".(Was not BIG enough for a "BoomBox" Designation)...and was able to record the whole album start to finish with no interruptions. Before the "anti-pirate" avengers start dogging me, I have since purchased the album in multiple formats, multiple times at full retail, BUT for that year, and probably many more, I wore the hell out of that tape. Among my high-school peers, and my crazy Art Teacher at the time, the album reached almost mythic/religious status. Until that time, I always knew that music could be an important influence, but that album convinced me of the absolute certitude of that assumption. And although they were never my "favorite" band or even genre of music., that album changed my 16-17 year old life. Rock on.

Can’t argue your choices. For me, Echoes is a defining track because that was the definitive gateway to everything that followed. While I adore much of their earlier work, especially from the 68-70 era and much of the bootlegs from that era which proved just how incredible they were as a live act, Meddle is an album that I can’t live without. It is, for me anyway, arguably my 2nd or 3rd fav Floyd album after Animals and sometimes DSOTM depending on the day. Echoes is when they put it all together and launched themselves into the heliosphere of Rock bands. It’s a composition that I listen to every day of my life in some form or another, and personally has a direct connection to both my heart and soul and always lands the right way for me. The quickest 24 mins of my day every time I play it. But I admire your choices and the rationale. With Pink Floyd it’s an impossible task to select seminal songs or albums and you can’t boil down to just a couple selections, kinda like trying to pick a fav child. Too many options, too many great songs, but the importance that each album is meant to be listened as a full event makes trying to extract any one song from within the framework of the entire album of theme basically pointless, and impossible. From this Pink Floyd fan, I enjoyed your perspective and this video very much! Well done, Professor!

Absolutely love your take! However for me The Wall was the final Pink Floyd album because without Waters/Gilmore working together is it really a Floyd album. So I would call Division Bell a fantastic album but is it truly a Floyd album even if all the musical elements and lyrics are there. I would put in Meddle as the replacement for personal reasons much like yours with Echos being one of my all time favorite tracks. Ok I’m confused. If the Sam B is Sam Brown she is the daughter of singer Joe Brown? As far as I know Joe was never a member of Pink Floyd, although Sam was indeed a backing singer with the band

@@stephenbrown4211I thought exactly the same as you did. Joe Brown was never in Pink Floyd. Brown and Pink are colours and Joe and Floyd are names but that's the only link between them (besides Sam) 🤣

Ummagumma, my Favorite Pink Floyd Album. My first "rock" concert was for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the moon album tour in March 1973. I sat behind the rear speakers for their quadraphonic PA system. Ticket price was $4.50 for a tier C seat at Detroit's Cobo Hall. Main floor price was $6.50. I could have afforded that but my parents would have gone ballistic if I spent that much money for a rock concert.

I got to see Pink Floyd in Detroit at the old Olympia arena which was the home of the Red Wings. They played 2 sets - the first was more than an hour of older stuff ending with Careful with that Axe Eugene. Then about a 30 minute break they returned to play Dark Side of the Moon start to finish. I’ll never forget that show!

I list Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and The Wall as my 3 favorites by Pink Floyd. 14 in 1980 The Wall and its movie were and still are a big part of the sonic landscape I've had ever since. In The days before the internet, the cell phone or constant interruptions putting on The Wall and "just listening" was an amazing experience as a teen. I'd say it was Roger's lyrics but even after he left I still "listen" to the albums. While I can listen to individual songs of theirs, the music of Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream are two bands where I always strive to listen to listen to the entire album in it's entirety. These albums are greater than the sum of their parts. I still remember a fun joke I was part of after the wall came out. In junior high I volunteered in the school's library which included the schools PA master controls. These controls included a cassette deck. A fellow volunteer and I recorded Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 (we don't need no education....) but we included a good deal of blank tape at the beginning (and repeats of the song) so that when the song came over the schools PA system we were in another class and had "plausible deniability". I still remember the teacher of the class I was in when the music started playing he was pissed. No one ever knew who pulled this trick. Great Times. Thanks Professor but 6am for a radio show????? I hope I can catch the Sunday afternoon one.

Hi POR, It might be time for a remodel of your background decorations. I suggest you have a record rack that wraps around the background with the big comfy chair and a side table with the turntable on it on one side and another side table with a drink on it or something like that. The giant cassette can go above the rack on the wall. Maybe paint the wall a different color.

So many good memories 😁. First heard Dark Side as a sophomore in high school at a house party in 1975, while sipping on a pony keg of dark Schlitz and smoking something passed around (!). LOL. Changed my perception of everything. Then I saw the movie of The Wall when it first came out in theaters. WOW. Mind blowing 😮. I finally got a chance to see them LIVE at an outdoor concert in Phoenix in summer 1988 for the Momentary Lapse album, and again later that year at RFK Stadium (now gone) in DC. Both FANTASTIC concerts! WHAT A LASER SHOW 😮. Missed the chance of a lifetime while staying at the same hotel as the band in DC when I had to pass up an offer to party with the crew because of a very early business meeting the next morning.😩. Redeemed in 2006 when my new bride and I got lawn seats at Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix (outdoors again) to see Roger Waters and his band play the entire Dark Side album (and then some!). Complete with a flying PIG 😅!! What a night! What a concert!! I'll never forget the opening visual/sound on the stage screen of an old time radio sitting on a shelf changing channels with a glass of whiskey and a lit cigarette next to it. Then - Wish You Were Here started playing... Chills 😮... So many good memories 😄. Now I hear that Floyd has agreed to sell the rights to their songs for $400 million. Good for them, but I'm not looking forward to Corporate America bastardizing their songs to sell automobiles and shoes.😢. Long live Pink Floyd!!

I have to say that "Us and Them" is the greatest anti-war song ever. It's hard for me, though, to hear any track from Dark Side without continuing to listen to the next track - it actually feels wrong. I respectfully have to disagree with you on The Division Bell. About one third of it is subpar, though "Take it Back" is one of their greatest songs lyrically and musically. The segue into "Coming Back to Life," another great song, is rich. "Cluster One" is a great instrumental. I appreciate what you do, Adam!

I grew up in a place where my choice of radio was either country or Top40 - so after college I moved to Dallas to work and got totally immersed in rock for the first time and bought the Rolling Stone magazine that said ‘Which One Is Pink?’ I knew NOTHING of Pink Floyd and so I started buying albums and immersing myself - without smoking pot believe it or not. All my friends told me you have to smoke to make this music good - but for me, I needed no mind altering substances! I love so much of it and I finally got to see them at Texas Stadium in Dallas at some point in the late 80’s or early 90’s - it was amazing! But with all of it there is no song that is above ‘Comfortably Numb’ to me. Second, ‘Wish You Were Here’.

The Wall was the first song I heard because it was released as a single in the UK charts. Every child I knew remembers what schools were like back then authoritarian teachers corporal punishment. It was an anthem for us we would sing hey teacher leave us kids alone in class and in the playground. But in 1993 me and army buddy of mine had our six man room to ourselves for a bank holiday weekend. So we went and bought some weed and a drink and he played the album The Wall. When Comfortably Numb came on Gilmours solo hit me like a brick and I was hooked. Then we listened to Wish You Were Here and Dark Side Of The Moon. I have been Floyd fan ever since. Their songs are like my life especially the The Wall album. I want Comfortably Numb followed by Wish You Were Here as my funeral songs. I even got my nan into Floyd as well. Thanks for doing this video all the best Pink.

My favorite track from my first exposure to Pink Floyd was from Ummagumma. It was the summer of 1972 and I was a post military college student taking a summer class in public speaking (or something like that). But anyway, we were assigned a multimedia project assigned to teams from the class with the research topic of pollution in public spaces. The group I was in chose the New Jersey Shore as our topic of exposure. We traipsed up and down the NJ shore from Sandy Hook to Cape May searching for sights of pristine beaches to over-populated tourist traps. We filmed a slide show overdubbed with a narrative and I chose Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" as the background sound track. The class professor commended the group on the choice of background music as it held the whole piece together providing the continuity as well as setting the mood. I'll never forget that summer of '72 and this defining project.

The introduction to Time was brilliant! The clocks slightly out of synchopation, the percussion buildup, then the first heavy notes from David Gilmour's guitar... unforgettable! ❤️ Animals (Dogs and Pigs, 3 Different Ones) is my favorite album. Most people get bored after 3 minutes of a song. I become ABSORBED! 😲 But Comfortably Numb has big significance for me. I had just gotten out of the Army, after doing things unspoken, and trying to adjust to civilian life. Comfortably Numb really described my mental state at the time. Later, I sang the song so many times in karaoke, people wondered if I had any other songs 😂🤣 I will always love The Division Bell, too, because it showed the genius of Richard Wright! Finally! I wonder how all of these albums ranked in Zimbabwe? 🤔😂🤣

I was born in 1975, and this was the album my dad and I really bonded over. We even saw them in concert together in (I think) 1995. When he was moved to the hospice facility in the hospital, it was finally quiet without the loud breathing machine, and I wanted him to be able to drift off in comfort. The religious and classical music wasn't his style. So, I put on DSOTM on loop and massaged/oiled his dry & swollen hands and feet so he could sleep. I really felt like the right vibe. Comfortably Numb was perfect, Time hit a little close. But it was right, you know?
