This oversize rig is 198' long, 15'5" wide, 350,000 lbs and 19 axles. It was quite a site to see this thing backing onto the ship. The guys did an amazing job - very good at what they do.

While loading that rig on the Badger is quite a feat I can't imagine getting it thru either Ludington or Manitowac. The streets from the dock to the Interstate near Manitowac are narrow with several 90deg. plus turns.

I never realized that the SS Badger still had the original railroad tracks in place. I assumed they had been removed when she went into car ferry service.

Hauled 8 axle lowboy for years, then got job offer from heavy-haul specialist for multi-state, heavy 12& axle haul, then immediately got offer from food transport for much better money,,,, what to do?? As a truckdriver you should do the heavy haul right? Absolutely!! But as a parent of 3 kids, plus a grandkid, you take the money right?? Took me 2 weeks to agonize this decision, still hate that I took the money, I miss the challenge every day, and the job satisfaction from heavy haul, word to young punk truckdrivers, skip the money, take job satisfaction every time by staying single.

Dan K heavy haul should be the highest paid trucking. Sadly it isn’t, and that’s stupid.

Hard to believe that when you put that mush weight on on side of the ship that you do not get a list to the starboard side. Did not see and movement.

The badger has steam powered water ballast pumps. They watch the level during the whole time here and trim constantly while loading.

How does one get into this type of work? I haul fixed design oilfield equipment, using one Jeep and one booster for my company... It is the same equipment every time and the the trailers are designed to haul only that item... I would like to possibly jump into this industry if the money and work schedules are comprable to the Oil and Gas industry.

You are right and I think they were transporting this load to a railroad station to be placed on a railroad they are not going to transport that from Manitowoc Wisconsin to Spoken Washington with that set up
@gomerromer77082 жыл бұрын
@@mattharper588 I wouldn't bet on that. This is a wide and high load and there is no rail line from Manitowoc to Spokane that does not have tunnels. Look at the "loading gage" for BNSF and UP and CP and see what the limits are.

It's the guy operating trailer deserves credit not Semi driver IMHO
@hereintranzit5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mr. Asswipe, these kinds of jobs are not one man jobs !!!! It takes the whole crew to maneuver these kinds of rigging, including the man at the controls of the prime mover. Yea, that “semi driver” is one of the most important members of that crew, if you care to know anything about heavy haulage !!!
@johnniewelbornjr.89403 жыл бұрын
There's no "I" in "team"... Be it heavy-haul or moving blades, matching the driver and steerman is a must. That's not even considering good pilot cars while out on the road, for moving something this large and heavy is truly a team effort.
