Rest in peace, Don Meredith! Ironically enough, he and Pontiac passed away in the same year, 2010.

A neighbor had a 1980 diesel Safari wagon in dark blue with blue vinyl interiors. They had it 8 or 10 years and never had an issue.

What on earth is GM thinking about when competing against itself? In comparing Pontiac against Chevrolet and Olds they did nothing but increase marketing costs and reduce brand separation. If they continue this trajectory they might as well eliminate two of those brands.

Well, Oldsmobile was gone in 2004 and Pontiac was gone in 2010. Where have you been???

There is a mistake on the Olds 98 comparison as the 305 Chevrolet V8 shown was not used in the 98. They meant the 307 Olds V8, RPO code LV2.

1:57....................................Ah, the good old days when GM competed against themselves!!!!!!!!! 1:32 is REALLY a laugh!!!!!! People shopping for a subcompact weren't going to be going for the Catalina/Bonneville!!!!

Catalina was soon to be dropped by the Pontiac division. Full-size Pontiacs were very interesting and well-styled from 1959 to 1970...but after that they went downhill.

It’s interesting to watch Pontiac so openly beating up on other GM divisions. Those days are long gone.

To whom it may concern:. Dint GM have the bugs worked out of the Olds 5.7 diesel engine by 1980? I know it was introduced for 1978 and I remember as a kid hearing nothing but complaints against it. I even watched the court litigation against it in TV. I distinctly remember a large black man customer stating that "this diesel engine wasn't fit to go in a push lawnmower, much less a Ninety Eight Oldsmobile.". I had heard that in the 1980s that the diesel. Aside from having low horsepower. Was a strong reliable engine that provided excellent fuel economy.

The bad old days. Nice looking cars (by 1980 standards but the standard V6 were total dogs and ran rough. Won’t even mention the self destructing diesels or the butter soft camshaft lobes and the turbo 200’s that lasted a year or two.

They should of had Buford T. Justice in this too. He drove a 1980 Pontiac Bonneville.

Nice looking cars around that era the Caprice was more stylish did like Pontiac at that time the Catalina was replacement of the Bonneville in the 60s Pontiac had some beautiful automobiles though 80s wasn't bad just seem Pontiac was more classical in the 50s and 60s.

Interesting how individual GM brands had to carefully & effectively make subjective comparisons to their other family brands as competitors.... Also, at about 9:20 I think the announcer is right that the 2-door B-Body coupe for Pontiac had its own unique roof treatment....correct? Looking strictly at the 2-door B-Body ( full-size, junior series ) coupes.....doesn't the Pontiac Bonneville seem to have its own roof treatment / profile? It seems more formal and attractive than what I remember Chevrolet Caprice/Impala being..... It looks a little like the treatment Olds gave their 98, but that was the C-Body ( full-size, senior series, more formal & bigger than B-Body ). If there are any GM experts please tell me if my eye is correct. I'm mainly a Ford and Mopar guy, but have a good eye and deep memories of the GM Lineup from 1977 through about 1986 when I was a teenager and reading Motor Trend every month. Thanks. The Chevy Caprice & Impala looked different

So...in 1980, what did you trade? 22mpg with a POS diesel that spent more time in the shop, as apposed to a gas engine that ran every day but got 16 mpg's?

Those great full-size cars were what made America great in many ways. They were the envy of the world. Before long, the US would let itself get flooded with small, plastic junk from Japan. It would be 10 more years before the Japanese would come out with an "American" car, the LS400 - well-made, but smaller and priced way above its American inspiration. The rest is history.

It was done to give alternatives within the other GM divisions. End of day, GM kept customers and still made money. You have to remember too that if someone wanted more of a bread and butter car, they went for Chevrolet. If they wanted a somewhat sporty car, they went for Pontiac. It they wanted a techie entry level luxury they went for an Oldsmobile. If they wanted mid level luxury, they went for Buick. If they wanted top end luxury, they bought Cadillacs. It was GM’s motto, they built a car for every purse and purpose.

Why would Pontiac compare the Bonneville equipped with the Oldsmobile 5.7 Liter Diesel engine to other GM full size B-Models from Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac? All of the GM brands shared engines between models! Silly comparison here!
@cadmanist
@cadmanist Жыл бұрын
They may have shared engines, but styling, interiors, options and even ride were different between the sister cars. Since this film was intended for the Pontiac franchise, they obviously had skin in the game to one-up Bob across town selling Chevys.

This comparison is funny it even pits gms other products against this car. Like who at GM approved this? Way to cannibalize your own company. 🤣

It's not as crazy as it sounds...Obviously the dealer wants to move Pontiacs, but GM would be just as happy to sell you that Chevy or Olds, especially if they weren't on your radar before you walked into the showroom. And now the Poncho dealer has some skin in the game as to why his cars are "better". It's a win-win.
