The legendary jockey, Eddie Arcaro: "I'm not a steward, but if I was, I'd take the number down..." then the old marble mouthed steward says "we didn't see it..." smh
@AZdoberwoman10 жыл бұрын
A lot of people disliked Cosell, but he knew his stuff and called it as he saw it. The stewards didn't want to break with tradition. And if Arcaro says disqualify the horse, I agree! Cordero was a dirty rider, as Cosell strongly hinted at .
@orisha1910 жыл бұрын
Susan, you are completely right plain and simple Cordero cheated and got away with "one" on "Patriarchal Tradition" what BS!!
@ipowers29279 жыл бұрын
orisha19 No, he didn't cheat. Codex was hit on the stomach by Cordero's whip and the horse reacted by jumping like he did and it just so happened that it happened when Genuine Risk was coming up on his outside. No horse is used to being hit on the stomach with a whip and any horse would've reacted the same way Codex did.

He cheated even though Angel is my man, who can forget the 1985 Derby aboard Spend A Buck, which was the most flawless ride from a front runner in Derby history (2 minutes and a fifth)!! But he fouled Genuine Risk to avoid a stretch duel while giving away 5lbs. I sincerely believe this.

LMFAO- Revenge? Codex was injured in the slop that day and never raced again- that was why he faded. And also- as none of you would know. Lucas wasn't nominating him to the Preakness- they wanted to try the Met Mile in New York- but Jeff Lucas accidently entered Codex. Then as he was training so well- Lucas decided to run him as they felt no horse in the country could beat Codex in the Preakness.

I've never really looked at this race before, but I think Cordero and Codex should have come down for interference. It's difficult to believe that Cordero didn't intentionally foul the filly in order to slow her down, especially since Codex only bore out after Cordero looked back and saw Genuine Risk closing swiftly.

Absolutely correct!!!! Codex should have been disqualified for bumping(hitting) Genuine Risk at top of stretch cause he clearly impeded her progress & I personally believe she would have WON & beaten Codex by at least 1 maybe even 2 lengths !!!!! She's still ONLY Filly in History to finish in the money(top 3) in All Triple Crown Races for that year...Her Kentucky Derby time of 2:02 flat is faster than both Regret & Winning Colors.... Winning Colors time was 2:02 2/5 & Regret's winning time was 2:05 in 1915.....she was sensational, outstanding.....Love me some Rags To Riches as well.....winner of 2007 Belmont Stakes..Love me some Rachel Alexandra & Ruffian & Zenyatta also....as well as Lady's Secret, daughter of Secretariat

They lied and sd it was no factor cause they knew there was enough evidence to take Codex down but they would never say that publicly b/c that would bring negativity & all the wagering going on , etc...u get wat I mean & so they chickened out & did not bring down(disqualify) Codex when they should have...so as not to get embarrassment & negativity, etc, etc....cause remember just 5 years earlier in the 1975 Match Race between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure & b/c of her injuries sustained on the Track, we lost arguably the greatest Filly in the History of Thoroughbred Racing (she's #1 for me personally) at way too young an age & that really hurt the Sport to a degree (we true Horseman know it), but Thank God 2 years later for Seattle Slew & then Affirmed b2b and that really helped & more & more people were going back to the Track & two weeks earlier only the 2nd Filly EVER to win The Kentucky Derby & still ONLY 3 have ever Won it cause we All know Winning Colors Won it 8 years later in 1988 ....Genuine Risk ran it in 2:02 flat & Winning Colors time was 2:02 & either 1/5 or 2/5, 1/5 I believe, anyways , between those 3 Stewards they sd (privately), " OK since we're Not taking him down we are 100 percent of the time going to tell media it was not close, hey, we're on an unbelievable roll here since '77 , 2 Triple Crown Winners last 4 years & almost another w/Spectacular Bid winning first 2 legs, now we all just saw a Filly 2 weeks ago Win the Derby & a fantastic time of 2:02 at a mile & 1/4 distance , which is Extremely Fast for a Filly & a very good time for a Colt b/c I looked it up(googled) about like year & half or two years ago, out of wat like 100 or slightly over 100 previous races at that same distance or 120 or something cause I'm pretty sure first like 10 or 15 years when it started in 1875, that it was Less than 1 1/4 distance it has been now for wat well over 100 races , Anyways, point is her 2:02 winning time is STILL tied for like 18th fastest winning time ever...in conclusion I'm still bitter & always will be b/c I'm stupid competitive like that till after my mortality...FYI for u out there, MY personal Top 8 Fillies of all-time: 1)Ruffian & the rest in no particular order but Yes Ruffian #1 for me & rest from oldest to youngest & however we want it: Gallopin(foaled 1942) gotta google her b/c before Ruffian was foaled in '72 , Gallopin was considered best Filly ever, then from oldest: Genuine Risk (f.77) ; Lady's Secret(f.82); Winning Colors (f.85); Rags-To Riches (f.2004) ; Zenyatta (f.either 04 or 05) ; then my girl Rachel Alexandra (f.2006) ...... Now, obviously my list is weighted almost 100 percent on Track Success NOT taking into account how they produced in breeding & retirement.... (mike drop) .... Peace

Julie Krone and Bill Shoemaker were thrown together in a match race at Canterbury Downs in October 1988. The two jockeys - neither one tipping the scale at 100 pounds - ding-donged around the Canterbury turf until they hit the wire as a team, with Krone winning narrowly. “Julie came out two, three, maybe four times into Shoe in the stretch,” said Tom Knust, then racing secretary at the Minnesota track. “When he came back, the stewards were ready to put up the inquiry if he wanted to claim foul. He told them, ‘She didn’t foul me, she just outrode me.’

Those of you who think Cordero didn't deliberate move out from the RAIL..... in the lead the best place to be meaning no ground to make up. Are blind, stubborn. My father watched it and got up and turned the TV off he was so disgusted. I called him fm CT. He said my brother saw the move too. You need to watch this whole video and listen to what Eddie Arcaro said. He thought Cordero should have been disqualified. Cordero saw GR coming up on the outside just like she did in the Derby. On another video of this race a few years ago, a woman who talked to Cordero actually said to her "I knew if I hit the BITCH, she'd fall back"!! That is out of his own mouth. And it's interesting he used the word "bitch" isn't it. I believe he felt his masculinity being threatened when GR was gaining on the outside. But Jack Whittaker said it best after the Belmont Stakes. He said the real story of this year's TC race is Genuine Risk !! He went on to point out that despite the Preakness "loss", GR went on to run in the Belmont on a sloppy track that didn't bother her at all. She came up between the 2 leading colts but didn't win it. She came in second. Codex came in 8th !!! Genuine Risk is the only filly in racing to RUN in and WIN or PLACE in all 3 Triple Crown races.

@tubeyhamster2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if some of this was a misunderstanding of the rather nonspecific word, “hit.” The steward and the commentators, including Eddie Archero, say hit to indicate contact between Codex and Genuine Risk, but I Vasquez may have said “hit” trying to tell the stewards that Cordero smacked his filly in the face with his whip. Two very different actions.
@VialliForever10 жыл бұрын
Quite blatant interference by Cordero. Whether or not it made a difference to the outcome or not I don't know (since Codex proceeded to draw away and won in a fast time, so I'm uncertain as to whether the interference actually cost Genuine Risk the race), but I am quite certain that there WAS interference. Perhaps it made no difference; maybe Codex was going to win anyway, but surely there was absolutely no reason for Cordero to go so wide when he was in front and on the rail, unless his intention was to obstruct Genuine Risk. In a small way I'm almost glad that Genuine Risk proceeded to be beaten in the Belmont fairly, so that we don't have to forever wonder whether she would have won the Triple Crown had this incident not occurred in the Preakness. At least this way we know that she wouldn't have won the TC regardless. Still though, if this DID cost her the Preakness, then that is a real shame.
@ipowers29279 жыл бұрын
There wasn't blatant interference. There's another video of this race on youtube with a better picture and when Cordero goes to his stick on Codex, you see the whip actually hit Codex in the stomach which causes him to jump to the side. That is a normal reaction for any horse that gets hit on his stomach by a whip. It was incidental contact.
@VialliForever9 жыл бұрын
ipowers2927 Cordero was not using the whip at all when Codex abandoned the rail and ran into the path of Genuine Risk. He ran into Genuine Risk simply because Cordero did not try to keep him close to the rail, not because he was whipped.

@VialliForever9 жыл бұрын
ipowers2927 At 32:42-43 Codex just runs straight into the path of Genuine Risk. Cordero does not even attempt to keep him on the rail, or even to make him turn. Watching Codex's feet, they are not turning at that point, he is just running straight, whereas Genuine Risk's feet are clearly turning inwards; she's attempting to turn for home. Only once Codex bumps Genuine Risk does he start to turn inwards. Cordero effectively decided to allow his horse to run into a rival, obstruct her, and then pull free after doing so.

I do not think Codex cost Genuine Risk the race--I think he was going to win anyway, and that although Cordero purposely carried her wide, he didn't knock her off stride--but I'm still so mad that Cordero did that. I think it was completely unnecessary in his efforts to win, too, as Codex was running so powerfully. I would have liked to see Codex disqualified just because I didn't want Cordero to get away with that. And then to hear him blame the controversy on the camera angle! Exactly Salice McCool. The team of Codex must of had the steward "deep in their pocket" knocked GRisk off stride AND struck her in the face with his whip. I would of found him after the race and knocked him around. ... what BS!

Well I sure am glad the people posting here are NOT stewards. For starters, Codex was ALREADY wide when Jacinto Vasquez chose to follow to his outside with Genuine Risk. There was no severe bump, rather a very minor brushing which did not cause her any apparent distress or obstruction. The final aspect that must be considered is that Codex won GOING AWAY. The finish was not decided by a nose, it was clear which horse was best. Race-riding IS allowed in this sport, and it's okay to go wide and carry another horse out provided nothing severe occurs. So, in summation, Codex held the same wide spot he did from the 3/8 pole onward, Jacinto Vasquez could have opted to go inside rather that the overland route, but that was his choice, and the filly never looked like she was impacted in any way warranting a DQ. Codex went almost as wide (1 horse width difference) and he pulled away in near record time. Clearly, the best horse won that day, and to say the filly got robbed is silly. Look at Afleet Alex almost fall to his knees on the far turn in the Preakness, CLEARLY get impeded, and STILL win going away like a champ. When a horse wins easily by open lengths, striding away like a machine late, there is no denying the true winner. Again, glad you are all not stewards, or you would take down horses far more often than you think.

this controversy will never go away. the stewards were cowards who didn't want to break tradition. Kudos to the Churchill stewards that did do the right thing despite the nonsensical and dangerous tradition of no DQ's in a big race
