A great day to be a Richmond supporter. I was 13 and by some miracle my auntie managed to get tickets so I was off to my first grand final (and last.....I have not been to another....nor would I want to with the current game). Bartlett was brilliant that day and it was amazing that he actually gave up a goal by handballing to a team mate at 21:31. He wasn't known as "Hungry" for nothing, his stats were always 98% kicks and 2% handballs. It's interesting to watch how the game was played then and they could certainly still learn a few lessons now. If you can kick the ball out from full back and land it almost on the wing, why bother with 15 chip kicks to do the same thing ? That's a hint Richmond - you have a certain defender whose surname is Short who can do exactly that. Anyway, I better shut up or I will start about how irritating the current day umpires are. I also went with my grandmother who would have been 60 at the time and she was on notice to behave by my auntie as the last game we went to at VFL Park during the 1980 season she got in to a physical fight with a guy and belted him over the head 3 times with her umbrella. After this game football pundits said Richmond would be the team of the 1980s, which seems amazing in light of what happened to the Tigers after 1982 as their metropolitan and country zones became less productive and the clubʼs management churned coaches and made many poor recruiting decisions. I am sure no one after this game thought Richmond would have a record of 74-166 for eleven seasons between 1983 and 1993, with on points the worst defence over that era.
