The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

One thing to remember, the drivers used to sling these cars around this track with NO POWER STEERING. Power steering wouldn't be introduced until 1981. Just proves that these drivers were total badasses.

@@towhee89 absolutely, those old big, boxy cars were heavy and not easy to handle. Then to think that they drove with no gloves, no cool suit, in the heat of the summer, if that doesn't prove they were athletes, I don't know what does

Look how young Mike Joy is. When did he start announcing? I am starting to believe they had a microphone in his crib announcing races because every time I think I found the youngest video of Joy... I find one even younger.

He was just starting his education here. By Daytona 2020 he was an expert at stretching those lips all the way out of the broadcast booth and into the Presidential limo to kiss Donald Trump's ass. He's from New England but I don't consider him a New Englander. This guy is as Southern Fried as Jerry Jones or Richard Petty.

Think he started MRN in the 1970s in NASCAR. But he was a track announcer before then I believe.

interesting to see that teams had the freedom to use different makes and models of cars back then. teams weren’t tied to a specific manufacturer.

GM teams used the Chevy Monte Carlo at most tracks and Olds Cutlass 442 at Talladega. If you look you will see different Chevy models in use. Most are Monte Carlos, but Harry Gantt (47) is a Caprice, while 74 and 99 are Chevelles. Bobby Allison (15) was running a Thunderbird, but there were a couple of Torinos in the field.

I get costs were an issue with tires, but so is blowing out a tire or finishing worse because you pit under green and lose laps and get a bad break with the yellow.

Less than halfway through & only 6 cars on the lead lap. If that were the case today. Every single person who complains about how much better Nascar used to be, would throw a fit about how unfair it was.

Maybe the newer fan's would, but us older fan's understood back then that the driver's faced much more than just racing the other car's/driver's/team's. They faced REAL DANGER of physical harm/death, plus it was extremely difficult just to finish these race's back then!
