The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

My late father and two of my late uncles were at this race. I remember about where we sat. It's amazing to be able to watch it again. Knowing I was there with my young daddy. Great race too. My dad and I loved Pearson.

For a pit crew renowned as one of the best, Richard Petty's pit crew certainly had more than their fair share of pit disasters. There was the fire late in this race while they were trying to refuel on a late caution. Then the following spring at Talladega, there was the infamous incident when a pit side water tank exploded, killing Randy Owens and injuring other crewmen. And even toward the end of Petty's career, there was another major pit road inferno in the latter stages of the Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta in 1989. For an organization that set the benchmark of excellence in the sport in so many different ways to have continuous pit road disasters had to have been surprising.

Maaaaaan for a brief moment there I got REAL excited when I saw both #11 AND #43 in the pits with their hoods up while knowing #21 was having problems. For a brief moment there I thought there would be a surprise winner lol. Then Rutherford spins right on cue lol.

Petty comes off a last place at Martinsville the week earlier while Cale finished 11th after crashing out of the lead.

5:15 Among the competitors in this race was a well known country and western singer with a medical history that included not one, but two open heart surgeries!! I am forever gobsmacked by the human condition.

What the broadcast didn't show is the fact that Pearson had them covered all day. He has a unscheduled pitstop and got behind and I sat and watched him catch back up each lap. I hardly took my eyes off of him all day. He had the fastest car all day.

Pretty sure that that EARL ROSS WIN at Martinsville the week before held out for being the only “forgeiner” winning a top level nascar race….until Chi-Town 2023.
