If Atlanta would have won, they had their shot against Philly since they had gone there and beaten them earlier. This really was Cinderellas midnight strike. Everything just turned into a pumpkin after that game. Even when they made the playoffs in the 1982, they got bounced out by the Falcons quickly even after gaining a lead. They really had it put together. They had a running game a good defense and things going their way. The 49ers took over the next year and ruled the 80's.
@tommythomason61874 жыл бұрын
This was the offensive line built to protect Bart, and they did a stupendous job blocking maybe the best defensive line in that conference. Too Tall jumped offsides at the end - no doubt about it, but the Atlanta offense clammed up and played too conservatively. Also, the Cowboys just turned it up a notch. If the penalty were called, it would have been Falcons' game.
@tommythomason61874 жыл бұрын
If you look at the (non) penalty play, you'll see Falcon tackle, Dave Scott, drive Randy White completely out of that hole. Too Tall was there, though - and no first down.

It was ashamed how it ended for falcons, if ed 'too tall ' Jones jumps off side, falcons keep ball and runs out the clock and wins this game. I don't know if falcons would have beacon raiders in super bowl or not but I think they would have beaten phidelphia in NFC championship game. Falcons had eagles number, beat them every time they played them, from '77 to '80.

Atlanta was the best team in the league that season. Once they went up 24-13, they stopped throwing and stopped blitzing going to a soft prevent. Even to this day Dallas admits they were not the better team. As Charlie waters said…sometimes you get lucky and steal one. Atlanta would not recover from this loss and would miss the playoffs for the next 11 seasons.

If i'm not mistaken wasnt this when the Atlanta defense was called "the gritz blitz"??? because they were supposedly so dominant..they stunk it up in this game though ...blew the 10 point lead with only 5 minutes to go & at home at that..the defense or lack thereof at crucial moments was the reason they lost & its a shame because they probably would have beat the Eagles at home in the NFC championship game the next week & went to the Super Bowl This loss just mentally demoralized that Falcon squad

You were not the more talented team....count up the hall of gamers and borderline hall of famers.... of the best 7 players in the game 6 werr cowboys. Randy white, Ed Jones, Tony Dorsett, W Andrew's, drew Pearson, Danny White ( Steve Bartkowski was close but not quite according to stats and pro bowls) Alfred Jenkins and Tony Hill are a wash pridemore and Charlie Waters the same with the middle line backers DD Lewis and I forget the LB for Atlanta but he was solid. And Newhouse was a bruiser also.

Best Falcons team ever. This loss really sucked and the Falcons never recovered from it (which was a fault of the coaches, not the players). I was 14 years old in 1980 and a big Cowboys and Falcons fan, but I was pulling hard for a Falcons win in this game. They went conservative on offense in the 2nd half and the Cowboys came back. Probably also the only big game Danny White didn't blow with a late game interception, fumble or sack. The Falcons looked headed for the SB. They'd already beaten the Eagles in Philly earlier in the year and would have had them in Atlanta the next week for the NFC title game. Dallas went to Philly the next week and got absolutely smoked

Danny White also saved the day for the Cowboys in the 1978 playoffs against the Falcons. The Gritz Blitz knocked out Roger Staubach with a concussion and White came in and led a comeback victory; he also executed a successful fake punt to get the Cowboys back in the game...

@@michaelbanaszak7775 Yes, I was 12 years old in '78 and a huge fan of both teams. I watched the game live too. The Falcons were a great young team with Leeman Bennett as HC. The Cowboys would lose the toughest/best SB ever to the Steelers a few weeks later (which I still haven't gotten over!) The Falcons were very inconsistent, up one year and down the next, which indicated a coaching problem. Bennett was a good, but not great head coach. Jerry Glanville was the defensive coordinator who lived (and most often died) with gambling, aggressive defensive play. The '80 Falcons started slow, then won 9 straight with a group of great young players and rookies. Steve Bartkowski was one of the best QBs ever and William Andrews was a hell of a player who lost his career early to a knee injury in '84 training camp. Andrews was the only guy I ever saw who ran over Ronnie Lott (in a MNF game) He was HOF caliber, no doubt about it
