Thanks for the detailed description of this headache. I was really glad to see that you got those countersunk flat-head screws out. I believe the are actually pozi-drive and not Phillips, but wasn't sure since you didn't show the head up close. Pozi-drive have a different internal angle and don't come out well with Phillips drivers. Here in Europe Pozi-drive is more common than Phillips for mechanical and automotive parts. Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder. Doc is lucky to have his car in your hands.

Hi Bruce, yes they could have been posi drive…I do have a couple posi drive screwdrivers ( the carburetor tops on the triumphs are posi drive screws) but nothing that big.

Well done David a great result and thank goodness those top screw/bolts came out, I couldn’t imagine trying to drill them out. Kind regards, Richard.

Top Alfa tip - put the gear lever in second before first and 4th before reverse. for smooth gear entry.

Classic Alda sell the replacement screws - these are a hex head. Nice video, great info!

The socket head cap screws are a great solution! I think you should be all right on corrosion since you used the never seize.

I'm surprised Doc wanted to replace the limit straps and bump stops. I left mine on my '74 restoration but did replace all 8 of the rear bushings on the trailing arms with regular rubber. I've replaced the bushing on a TJ with poly and have now learned you really don't want poly unless ride quality doesn't matter to you. I left the T-bone bushings alone and figured that if I had to replace the bushings I'd just replace the whole assembly. If you pull off the door panels consider cleaning and lubing the door lock handle assembly. I had to replace the locksets (PO didn't have keys) and was amazed at how much better the doors were after I rebuilt the handles.
@cheftush2 жыл бұрын
They are something Doc bought early on and I had in inventory laying around. I’m not disappointed that I changed them. I’m not sure what the quality of rubber parts/bushings are for the Alfa, but for the Triumphs they are horrible. Maximum three year use before they are junk. Most guys in the triumph world will go with Poly over rubber…some will even go with nylatron.

105/115 Alfas don't have synchros for N to reverse or N to 1st. I think you installed the 4 limiting strap plates 180 degrees out.

Tell me about the plates please? I noticed they had an end that was slightly out turned. What direction should this be facing and what is the reason? Cheers, Tush

If you put the gear leaver towards second gear just start to engage then pick first or reverse, this will slow down the speed inside gearbox.

Yes, Doc the owner knows about this trick. Thanks though!
@mikehoroho84532 жыл бұрын
Cheftush you don't want to use stainless screws they will corrode next to aluminum. It chemically reacts with the aluminum is something I learned working on sailboats. You do not want to have stainless steel connecting with it will rot the stainless steel.
@mikehoroho84532 жыл бұрын
Yeah putting some kind of barrier between the aluminum and the screw stainless steel screw will help to protect it so I think you'll be okay.
@philtucker12242 жыл бұрын
Mike, what is the solution to the issue that you have highlighted ? (Please)🤔
@cheftush2 жыл бұрын
Hey mike, well, I’m not sure if the stainless steel will be worse than the steel bolts that were in there? I know about the corrosion of dissimilar metals, but I’m not sure what more I could do here other than to coat liberally with anti seize. Cheers, Tush
@jonwagstaff41502 жыл бұрын
@@cheftush The big problem is obviously the reaction between the steel and the aluminium. I believe nylon spacers are now available. Also, the small panel that hold the whole assembly is a first class dirt trap so cleaning it out regularly and spraying with some wax helps
@cheftush2 жыл бұрын
@@jonwagstaff4150 well, they would have to be sleeves I think? And, the aluminum block would need to be drilled out to accommodate….I think I’m better than the factory now at least with the socket heads and the anti seize…..

The rear springs look really rusty, likely even rusty under the rubber tube on the bottom few coils.
@cheftush2 жыл бұрын
They do have some surface rust on them but they are in good shape otherwise.
