My poor dad always wanted a Lincoln. My mom always said “no”. At this time, my folks actually had a very rare car. They owned a 1977, 4 door Mercury Cougar brougham. It was a beautiful car, chocolate brown, and always got admiring comments. Lincoln had downsized in 1980, my dad and I thought the new lineup was very nice. He and I visited the Lincoln showroom close to our house. He wanted a new Town Car. I told him black was the color it had to be in. With his A plan Ford discount, the car was going to be around $20,000.00. We came home, my dad showed my mom the brochure, she seemed interested, then the bad news. “How much?”. She blew a gasket. The car was going to cost more than they paid for the house. We went back to the dealer several months later, and my dad and I picked out a Cougar XR7 in Canyon Red. It was a pretty car too, but didn’t equal a Town Car. My dad never did get his Lincoln, I always wished he had, but several Cougars, and the new Taurus later, my dad’s last car was a 2010 Fusion. When he passed away in 2016, he had only 23,000 miles on it. When my husband and I were making his funeral arrangements, the only special thing we asked for, was a Lincoln hearse for my dad. The funeral home found a new Lincoln hearse for him, and we rented a new MKZ for the day. I hope he was happy.

Beautiful car, 130HP, 230TQ, 302cu in, the 80's was a bad time for power, My Dad bought a New Lincoln in 1988 150HP, now the 302 is 460HP what a difference 38 years make, the power does not take away from this car and its time in history and the luxury it represents. Thanks Lou! You do find the special ones.

@@loucostabile proportional vertical and horizontal lines. ..amazing how that front-end had a ten year run. Definitely a Mark in an era of such laize-fair. Fantastic survivor. This is the era when Japan started to kick Detroit's ass - which continues to this day. FoMoCo and Henry Ford II in particular just couldn't let go of the 60's. This car is a terrific example of the what Detroit could build but in reality was pathetic compared to it's predecessors. Thing's were changing and Detroit at this pont in time couldn't get off it's ass to move forward. Meanwhile Japan and the American demographic completely changed and there forward has never been the same. Germany provided luxery, Japan provided build quality and market demand and Detroit and it's Union's wouldn't see the forest through the Banzai trees...

My first of nine Panther platform Lincolns was also an '81 Givenchy acquired in the mid 1990s. Banged it up a bit driving in the wet on a stretch of PA blacktop but drove it from 128 to 245k miles. Try finding another even remotely in the condition and at the price I bought mine for these days!

My 1979 Lincoln Town Car had that same radio system this car did. That was the first year that Ford used that digital radio system as a option radio in their cars. Ford was the first to have the digital radio system over other car makers. Lou you know me I love Lincolns and especially this model of Lincoln. This is a true piece of history. It is a shame that Lincoln did away with this model at the 1997 model year. I wish they would bring it back in a grand fashion. I have always loved Lincolns owned a few different models over the years. My Town Car from 1979 was this same color outside it was white too. Those were dark days for the car industry as they struggled to adhere to the restrictive new emission standards while improving gas Mileage. They several downsized the Mark 6’s in 1980 and a lot of people hated this including me. I have to say this is a nice example of the car that it is. The days of excess were coming to an end. Luckily things ended up getting better!

My father bought a new Ltd Wagon in 88 and it had the same interior as this Lincoln. In fact, Ford used this interior from the 70s on. I always had a soft spot in my heart for these Fords. You’ve got to see this car in white with red painted sides. It looks like something amazing from the 50s or 60s. To think this style was old news by 83. The two tone paint at least.

Lou, hard to believe I was on the Lincoln Mercury Floor car shopping when these were in the show rooms. I was gushing over these Mark VI coupes and sedans. It was all about the 4spd auto and Digital gauges. This model sold between $22K and $25K and I remember thinking they hit the twenty thousand dollar mark WOW. I loved this Style interior especially in the Burgandy. I ended up with the 8 cyl with 4spd auto XR-7 that looked like a smaller version of this. That had a sticker of $12K and that was also unheard of especially for a 18 year old kid. LOL. 16.9% financing OUCH! $313 month for 48 months. I traded it in for a 1981 Bonneville Coupe in Burgandy with the Sport honey comb rims padded landau top The Best Pillow top seats of any car I have ever had. Man was that car special and brought lots of attention even from my boss at the time. Thanks for memories Lou. I would love to find a Lincoln like this. I remember how long that Hood was looking over it while driving it. I bought a used one later on to sell and make a profit. I bought and sold for a few years when I took over the diner. I almost left the diner because I was doing so well selling cars on my own. But then everyone hung on to cars and the milege were way to high to sell and make money. :( I never lost money except my last car I broke even and said no more. I’ve driven almost every domestic make and model from early 70’s to early 90’s.

The Mark VI was and is today very under appreciated. Having owned a 1983 4 door with absolutely every feature available; I can say that they were the best of old school (1979 Continental) and modern technology which was first offered in the 1980 model year. Additionally, Lincoln was offering a 4 door to hearken back to the 1958 and 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark III and Mark IV. The 1980 model year offered more interior room than the 1979 model year. The Mark VI should be compared to the 1979 Continental and not the 1979 Mark V, because I really believe that Lincoln was trying to do a blending of the 1979 Continental town car and the 1979 Continental Mark V into a new 1980 Continental Mark VI. That is why, body wise, the 1980 Town Car and 1980 Mark VI were almost identical. But, there ended the similarities, because the Mark VI offered pure top of the line luxury amenities.

hello Lou, thanks for showing enormous respect to this rare beauty. I see you’ve discover the vast amount of engineering marvels achieved with this model. Many have even stated the ride quality is better, has sharper turning radius, and a quieter more roomy interior + larger trunk space than its predecessors. Those enhancements are just scratching the surface. As a bonus the Mark VI graced the original panther platform loved by traditional body on frame enthusiasts. Right now I’m adding your video to my favorite Lincoln Playlist.

I miss the ambiance that good faux or real wood trim, color varierty, embossed cloth seats door panels and red and white door courtesy lighting gave automobiles during these times. I had a 1996 Ford Taurus GL an early production model that had bluish grey paisley cloth seats and door courtesy lights.

I had bought a minty 70 Lincoln 460 gutless pig, After some extensive motor work it now makes 420 hp and a shitload of torque decent fuel mileage on reg. gas Always wanted a Hot Rod Lincoln

For an automobile as pricey as this Mark VI, you would think that Ford/Lincoln would have installed some sort of headlight surround plate. As it is, when the headlights are on (or their doors are open) it spoils the overall look of the car, and screams 'cost-cutting courtesy of the bean counters' 😒

I beg to differ the Continental 4dr sedan especially the extended wheelbase version with coach doors is quite classy. What is sad is that in 1 or 2 years from now cars will be gone. I'm no fan of subs or crossovers.

I didn't like these cars, underpowered, and it looked like something from the Flintstones where their feet came thru the floor.

@Ron Gagliano the Dodge pickup called the little red Express in 1978 was quicker than the Corvette and a Porsche and it had a 225 HP 360.they changed how they rated HP in 1972 it was now net HP.if you check on the 1973 455 pont firebird it was still able to turn quarter mile times in the 13 sec range.but the Lincoln featured here was under powered for such a heavy car they should of put the 460 in it,it had the room for it,perf.would have been much better but gas mileage would have suffered, but I have a feeling people would have liked the power enough to pay the mileage penalty.
