I love these early body style mercedes. Iconic style. I looked for a affordable decent w123 but ended up with a low mile 1987 w124.. nice car and like the power of the om603. I would love to have this motor in a w123 .. Sure you know but Remember it's a diesel. The pedal does nothing till its running. So pumping the pedal doesn't help start.. Its not like a gas engine.

My glow plugs have apparently died (not sure if it's the plugs or the relay) and I've been starting on compression alone. It probably is killing my starter but it's gotten me there every time as long as my battery has a charge. Of course it takes a hot minute to build enough oil pressure and compression to actually turn over but once it's warm it starts up immediately every time for basically the rest of the day. If I lived in a colder climate I'd probably be screwed but the coldest I've started it in this way was probably only about 45 degrees and it still took the same amount of time. Tapping the accelerator pedal a few times helps prime the engine a little as well and gets it to catch. If I had trash compression though, I'd probably be SOL.

Check your Valve gaps. It makes a massive difference. Also check to make sure you have no holes in your fuel line which will suck in air. That was Ultimately the main issue with this car.

@@bradleypridgeon I have so many things that need to be done on this car. Valve job is definitely on my to-do list. But first I need to get the car to shift into 3rd and 4th gears which it did when I bought it but stopped about 3 months later after a drive in the rain. Everyone insists it's the vacuum, but no one has any ideas for when the vacuum is good enough (not perfect but definitely not broken), the fluid is full and clean, and it still refuses to shift beyond 2nd gear. But yeah, valve job, new glow plugs, also 2 of my injector lines leak where the metal fuel line enters the top nut on the injector. Any idea on what that involves fix-wise? I'm hoping it's a simple replacement of some parts like a seal or a new washer or even new injectors but I don't know how much of that assembly actually gets replaced.

The 1981 w123s and forward has the new style glowplugs where if one goes out, the others still work. you must have 3 or all out, and/or maybe some air leaks in the fuel system, making the fuel run back when it sits. Also the glowplug relay stays on for like 20-30 seconds after the light goes out, you can hear a click, you don't have to turn the key back and forth for a new cycle. Depending on mileage and service the engine could be worn out aswell, they get cranky in cold weather, I had an -83 240D with a healthy engine I could fire it up in -5c without glowplugs when the relay went bad.

It turned out to be a massive air leak in the fuel system combined with an intermittent glow plug relay and shoddy glow plugs that was causing the starting issues.

@@bradleypridgeon Yes these are usually the culprits for them not starting, not much else can go wrong since it only needs fuel and air and a little heat

Love your videos! When you have the harder to start ones, can you please show us what you do with the throttle pedal when starting them?
@bradleypridgeon2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I'll tap them a bit only if it helps but many newer cars it does no good. Thanks for enjoying.

How long does it take to start when it hasn't been started for several days on really cold mornings?

whatts the random nailing sound? Is that the fuel injectors nailing randomly?
@w124mercedes72 жыл бұрын
Yep. Clear sign of injectors. Can't mistake that sound.

Nice vid, shame about the bumpers on American 123s!. Spoil the lines a wee bit.
