Come for a drive in the Alps on this classic Mercedes 240 Diesel. Forgive the humming noise, the car is equipped with a roof gallery that creates that annoying noise above 110 kph. Tachometer is not original and not calibrated.

They say this is one of the slowest Mercedes but that one sure has good pickup. Gets up to 100 rather quick. Handles the freeway well.

Actually there is a 200D also from the same era which has 55 or 60 HP. That must be the absolute slowest.

5500rpm+ in a 40 year old diesel? I didn't think that was possible! I rarely reach 5000 in my 2016 turbodiesel

I owned several w123. Still own a 240d from 81 and a 300d automatic from 81. The 240 is very balanced on weight distribution but I prefer the beefier 300’s. Curiously my 240d has the same “roof gallery” and don’t like it one bit. It only serves the purpose of amplifying road noise.

Exactly....I took it off and now the ride quality is so much better. Car is getting prepared for a trip in Feb 2025 that will take it from Italy to NordKap...

@@tsebehtgma6422 I know that this car is more reliable than a new one, because I have one. And plus I know that if you drive at maximum speed for a long time, the engine temperature is higher (higher than usual), especially the oil, due to friction. An oil radiator was installed in several cars, especially in 3L diesel. This is not scary, not critical, if the engine is set up correctly and overhauled, valve clearances are set. I do not recommend doing this, unless of course you do not want to ruin the engine faster

You can drive at max and it is useful, but not for so long. Maximum revolutions clean the engine from slag, deposits. But this should be done for 2-4 km and give the engine a rest (reduce speed to 100-110 km/h). At a speed of 140 km/h this is 4700 rpm - the maximum revolutions of this engine

Fai conto 4 marce, 2400cc diesel e faceva 140 kmh . Io avevo preso il 200 benzina col gpl e 175 li faceva ma consumi erano esagerati. Ma almeno andava mpò più, 4 marce chiamava la 5, ma in prima almeno ti spostavi e bene! Auto modello costruito x 25 anni, davvero ottima qualità e auto Ora un modello costruiscono x 4 anni poi vecchio cambiano Quella era davvero x la vita come durata motore e comodità, la rimpiango e ora,ho MB c 200kompreasor altra auto da 250 KMH, airbag,ABS, SRS, ecc ed ha 25 anni. Ultime MB serie

@@maurorinaldi1392 La 240 D ce l'aveva mio cugino, io ero un bambino ma mi ricordo che era un'auto fantastica poi ai tempi non era come adesso che pure i poveracci si prendono la mercedes a rate centennali, ai tempi la mercedes ce l'avevano solo i veri ricchi.
