Most thorough video around on clutch cables I’m sure it will be very helpful to a lot of people. I think the silent killer of clutch cables is heat and how close the bracket is to the header. You can only bend the bracket back so much before you start aggravating the natural arch of the cable as it’s wrapping around to go down to the bell housing. I used single hook billet quadrant a $27 pioneer stock replacement cable and firewall adjuster with some DEI heat sheathing and i haven’t felt any stretch in the cable whatsoever. I took the slack out of the cable with the firewall adjuster. Clutch adjustment without wiping out a throwout bearing is another issue. There’s no clutch fork return spring on a foxbody because Ford used that self adjusting quadrant. Some people say the t.o. bearing shouldn’t touch the clutch fingers at all which is how I fixed the problem I was having. Worst thing you could do is have too much pressure on that throwout bearing. Because you’ll be replacing it soon. Ehhh!

Thank you very much. I really appreciate that!!! I agree with you 100%. The T.O bearing is an interesting one in that I too have heard mixed reviews on whether or not one should have it engaged (slightly) all the time or not. They are definitely susceptible to a ton of clutch dust and heat which never agrees with bearings! That said, I’ve adjusted clutches where the TO bearing is both fully disengaged and fully engaged and the end result in both cases could be a squeaky bearing 🤷‍♂️😂. Chances are, it’s all due to the fact that things like bearings ain’t built like they used to be 😞.

I just did this job myself and it took me 8 hours over two days. I tried everything to get the paw adjuster out. I finally took an old wood chisel , heated the end with a gas torch, and burned the plastic tip off going through the fire wall open hole. Once the tip broke off, the paw popped right off. What a design!

This helped clear up Steeda’s unclear instructions. They don’t specifically say to discard the rubber bushing when using a firewall adjuster; they just say to remove it so you can trim those 4 pieces off, so I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to keep the bushing or toss it. Great stuff!

I'm in the middle of swapping a clutch cable now. Man, you're not kidding about how hard it is to get that factory adjustment pawl/claw off of the shaft. For a while I simply didn't think I could do it, but finally got it after some anguish and struggling. I love your video, super helpful! That's a real nice car you've got there, beautiful stock engine bay.

Just wanted to give some tips for how I got the back paw off. Easiest way is to take the spring that’s connected to it off with a flathead. Then with your elbow press the clutch to the floor and use a long pry bar to push the plastic peace of the shaft. Once I figured the trick out it took me 5 min. After the initial hour of struggling.

Okay so question, I knowing you have to fiddle with it to get the sweet spot, but I’ve gone through a couple of threads about the following debate… should the adjuster be mainly in and then turned loose (out) as the clutch wears or is the other way around where it should be mainly out and then it gets adjusted by tightening (in)? Recently got an 1989 GT and I got the kit but I don’t know how to start off with it. I’ve got a new clutch and a new tremec t5 in the car now. The quadrant and firewall adjuster are the last steps. (Well that and eventually switching to an aluminum driveshaft)
@KASLCustoms

No problem. You start the adjuster all the way in and adjust it out from the firewall to tighten it 👍

I was wondering how hard it was for you to get the little pawl off off the clutch quadrant? It looks like you had very little room to the right of the shaft. No matter what I did I was not able to get the pawl off. I couldn’t push the pedal up enough to get clearance to move it to the right off of the shaft. I ended up needing to drill through the plastic and break it off. Of course I started trying to remove the whole pedal assembly but then figured just drill out the plastic would be easier. You must of had a hair more clearance then mine when you pushed the pedal
