Removing the intake silencer is a proven 4 HP gain. MM&FF magazine tested all on these cheap/free easy mods "back in the day". When these cars first came out, we were doing everything we could find to eek out every bit of extra power out of them. Removing the silencer was part of the famous/proven "10 Minute Tune-up". Every little gain adds up.

If you disable the Smog pump in the ECM with a chip or a Qurterhorse it will eliminate the 1200-1500RPM start up. It's nice starting it up and it going right to a calm idle.
@NOrs3GOd7 күн бұрын
How would you go about that? Id like to try to do that

@ you would need a programmable chip the connects to the back of the ECM “that little door that says (do not remove)” and you’ll need software like Binaryeditor.

On a budget build instead of getting block off plates you can just cut the plumbing off the pipe coming off the back of the head take the original pieces, flip them over to the flat side not the “hole” side and with a little high temp silicone re attach to the head and you are blocked. Also, there are belt diagrams and belt lengths for every conceivable combination on LMR and several other sights that take out the guess work on belt sizes... Great videos btw!

I have an 84 LX with the same thermactor set as yours. The original smog pump lasted 35 years. the Dorman replacements were built like crap and the bearings fail within 2 years. Getting hard to find the correct smog pump anymore. I notice with my 84 that when I have a code 44, thermactor not function, the car runs like shit. When I replaced the TAB valve it went back to a smooth idle. So I've preferred to keep my secondary air system functioning. But like I said the parts are getting harder to find. My car has been idling rough the past few weeks, ran a scan and got code 44. The closest thing to mine I could find on eBay was a TAB for an 87 which is identical to the TAB for an 84 apart from the part number. I'm sure it will work fine. All it does is open or close depending on vacuum. Just curious, the ECM on OBD1 cars aren't really programable. Did you have to install a diode or something to fool the ECM? When that smog pump system is removed the ECM will notice and not just produce an annoying code, it can make the car run like shit until you resolve it. My car ran like shit last time my TAB failed and I'm sure this time will be the same thing.

Hey bud thanks for the kind words! I’ve never heard of any of that or dealt with any of it personally. Technically the equipment was installed for a reason however like I state in the video, I would be interested in seeing someone (that is qualified) to perform a comprehensive review of how all this equipment works in practice and if it does the things it was intended to do on paper/in theory. Keep in mind that no matter what, cats (like almost all automotive parts) have a service timeline and will plug over time. They are not an item that will work like new forever. To be completely honest, if you still have stock cats on one of these cars - and it has any sort of typical miles on the odometer - I would say your cats are “past due” and should be changed. Hope that helps

I went to the hardware store and matched up two bolts...( sorry I thought i I deleted this finding out it was 2 years ago.) I replied to another follow up article in more detail. LOL. I had only one problem when I removed the stock headers.. the 2 sided bolt that held the dip stick tube didn't cooperate....the other 15 header bolts came out easy, The bad part was , I put Ford racing headers on it and they rusted really fast. I replaced them with BBK unequal length ceramic coated ones and.BBK H pipe. I already had Flowmaster's American Thunder SS exhaust kit on the car.

LOL - yes you do bring up great points for sure. For me, its one more thing to have to worry about failing - due to age - that I never want to replace. There might be different parts availability but the pumps used in F150s of this era are getting harder to find with junkyards being your best options most of the time. I've recently read about the SMOG systems in these cars (specifically the EGR and SMOG pump) and both systems are "bypassed" and not used during wide open throttle. So as a performance gain, I don't see it making much of a difference. In the same article's I read, if the SMOG pump is removed, the catalytic converters are more prone to clogging because they are not getting properly heated from the SMOG pump system. So, in conclusion, If a guy wanted (or needed) to keep the car emission legal for street use, I would recommend keeping these systems intact and functioning. But...full discloser... I don't have any experience with removing or disabling these systems on these cars... so I don't know.

But a smog pump delete is a mod but I want to leave the tubing in place if I go better shorty headers I guess I could just leave them back there, .my pump seems to be working fine do you think it would free up any amount of noticable power? I'm assuming may see 5+/- hp on am actual Dyno but not the butt dyno. But I could use any extra power with tall gears and the arm stretching 215hp lol, being stock for the moment its not fast but has enough power to be fun especially with a 5 speed and it has great daily drivability and fuel economy its actually get noticably better fuel economy than my 2010 grand caravan.

In fact, I installed a hi-flow catted h-pipe and had 2 "racing" cats added when I put my supercharger on to ensure I would pass emissions. Runs cleaner than stock (according to the pass sheet) and flows better too! But I did than years ago when the H was $250. So it is possible to have performance and help the environment. I have 88 gt vert still speed density I put bbk shorts and bbk off road catless hpipe and now getting backfire when shifting from 1st to 2nd at high rpms and from 2nd to 3rd sometimes. I read forum that said it's because I have no cats now and still have smog hooked up. Have you herd of this before? And Info much appreciated
@KASLCustoms Жыл бұрын
Hey bud. First question is: what RPM are you shifting at to get a back fire 😂👊. That’s some high rpm brother. Lol all jokes aside, have you checked your timing? I can’t imagine that it has anything to do with you still having your smog pump still hooked up. Honestly, it’s just an air pump that pumps air into the heads and exhaust.

I really enjoy all your vids buddy! I am starting a AOD to T5 swap on my 1988lx 5.0 vert and interested in doing this smog delete setup as well. My question is did you remove the charcoal canister and evap stuff as well?? the purge valve and all that too line from upper intake manifold down to evap ? just plugged it all off or? I am not sure if your year vert would differ from my car and the factory set up since my car is a speed density car . Also when you removed all smog stuff did you worry about getting a check engine light code on the dash? I started pulling my h-pipe tonight and noticed i have that long smog tube attached to my h pipe that goes up above passenger side header and its kicking my ass to remove from the car from the bottom just using floor jack and jack stands, god I would kill for a lift lol fat guy problems lol hahaha too much beer and pizza and tight fit under the car. I have heard guys say just cutt that smog tube off the h pipe but not sure if thats a hack way of doing things. How in the hell did you tighten the h pipe bolts and nuts to headers lol. its so damm tight clearance wise in my car. Maybe after i get that big bulky AOD out my car and the T5 in there will be more room! cheers from the states down here in Maryland brother! thanks any input much appreciated.

Hey pal thanks so much for the kind words!!! 1. Keep the evap stuff 2. Cut the line that goes the the H-pipe. If you don’t need to cut it, you’re a better man then me 😂 3. No need to worry about a check engine light by removing the smog pump. There is no electronics tied into that system. Just plug off the 2 vacuum lines 4. Get yourself a good swivel socket and some extensions and you’ll get those bolts tight 😉 As for the beer and pizza - I like your style 😎 Thanks for reaching out and I hope this info helps 👍

Nice clean virgin car to modify, don't see too many of those around. Had a 90 LX 5.0 5 speed back in the day. Didn't do anything that because I was young and poor. Finally got another sports car after so many years, a 94 SN95 GT convertible. Nice virgin car with low miles and all original. I was looking for another Foxbody, 90 LX just like mine but this one popped up and it was at a good price so I couldn't let it go. Unfortunately its an auto. Slowly doing some mods to it. I would imagine this has all that smog pump crap like the Foxes.

The smog delete will “technically” make your smog readings higher. I think you’ve potentially got larger issues in which your car is running too rich

In Texas, vehicles twenty five years or older are exempt from emissions. Generally speaking, all Fox bodies are emissions exempt by now.

The hose that connects to my exhuast isn't connected, causing a major leak. Why I'm deleting it, I go 0-60 in about 12 sec. About 50% power right now because of this. I've replaced everything fuel, air, and spark related. I'm just now discovering that this is the issue... Could this of caused any major damage to my heads and anything in that area?

There are 2 vacuum diaphragms that are in the smog plumbing. They need to be plugged if you remove the pump/plumbing 👍

Hey! Two things! What about the charcoal canister and everything that connects to it? And also, I was under the impression that the EGR system circulates gas fumes back into the engine in order to conserve fuel consumption. Won't you notice less gas mileage removing the EGR system? I've ran mine both ways. I really feel like the EGR system saves you a little on gas consumption. I know most people prefer horse power over gas consumption. What are your thoughts?

Smog and EGR are different. This pump just helps start up I believe.
