I was at the game and the atmosphere was incredible. Two great teams but there was always a sense that Offaly would do it .

A superb game of catch & kick from both teams all the great skills of gaelic football was showcased in the 1982 final which for most part was played in torrential rain. We hear about the fitness levels of today, this was non stop action from start to finish. Yes there is more stamina required in todays game because most teams are playing the short passing possession game which requires a lot of running. Forwards of Offaly & Kerrys time were allowed very little room. What would Matt Connor Brendan Lowry John Egan rip Mikey Sheehy etc do with the space that is allowed in todays game? The scoreboard in Croke Park wouldnt be able to cope with all the scores those guys would get. RIP Paudie o Shea the great John Egan RIP the best most gifted forward i have ever seen along with the great Matt Connor. Not forgetting the genial Liam O Connor RIP who played at full back for Offaly & sadly passed away in December of 2013 I had the pleasure of meeting Liam when the Sam Maguire cup came to my village of Cloghan in 1982. An absolute gentle giant, thanks for the great memories Offaly & Kerry.

Yes, they were but they panicked at the end. What was Jack O'Shea doing back in his own goalmouth? Still the best time though. That Dublin team hadn't the footballers or the skill that Kerry team had.
