I'd love to see a compilation of the umpteen times David Coleman said that the true position would only be known after the bend on the second leg.

Lizzy Larounde, I totally forgot about Marita Payne, who was part of the silver medal 4x4 in 84. She was the fourth of these girls who are probably the four best 400 women Canada has ever had. It was great that they got to run with each other for so many years.

Very rarely a team dropped a baton in the 4x400m race. It happened to England in this video and by the Jamaican women's team at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. What a last leg by the Canadian runner. I guess that is what the event is about, saving yourself for the last 150/100m or so and then it is about determination fighting for the finish line and she certainly taught this experienced Australian a lesson.
@stevecrocker6904 Жыл бұрын
sorry ..... taught her what? She just hung on due to great fortitude and grit - but Raelene did nothing wrong at all (as the commentator said)

"Raelene Boyle couldn't match the sprinting speed of Angela Taylor" - the commentator was reading his 100 meter script apparently. He was talking no sense about this race where Boyle got to within 10 cms of running Taylor down.

"Raelene Boyle couldn't match the finishing speed of Angela Taylor" (at 4.35). I don't know which race he was watching. A game Taylor in fact just holds on.
Wow, what an awesome race! This was back when Canada had 3 of their best 400 runners ever... Charmaine, Killingbeck and Richardson. Also back in the day when a 100 meter runner would run a 4x4. Ya gotta love Angella for running this race. Why do we never see Usain Bolt run the 4x4? It's the last race of the meet. Why not run for your country and win another medal? Never underestimate a sprinter in a 4x4. I kinda felt Angella would hold her off.

I agree with u Marchjoy1963 England had way too much stagger to make up ... even if they didn't drop the baton, they would have factored for the gold, but it would have been exciting if they hadn't.
@Marchjoy196315 жыл бұрын
Wonderfull race - good job by Molly Killingbeck to put Canada in the lead for the last leg .. was crucial in the gold medal win, I am not too sure England would have factor in the gold medal fight; given their postion on the first exchange, and the fact that they were in lane 6, and Canada was in lane 3; and they were at the same part of the track, they had too much stagger to make up !

Angella was no slouch at 400metres she had a 51.81, and was ranked in the top 10in the commonwealth coming into these games. She ran the 400 metres on a national level but not internationally. Also Canada should have let Marita Payne run the second leg instead of a young Jillian Richardson - (she was the anchor but was replaced by Angella)- I think Canada would have had a faster time.

to drop a baton for a 4x400 race is dumb... is not like a high turbo speed in a 4x100 which do happens many times

You really do a disservice to our gals but not mentioning Marita Payne.. who Angella replaced on the anchor leg. She is still the national record holder, she came 5th at world champs in 83 in 50.06 a commonwealth record, and fastess north american. She really should have been favoured for a medal in LA where she came 4th in 49.91, but the sudden surge of american 400m female runners from 83 season into the 84 was quite simply eye brow raising.
