I had one and in cold weather I'd use ether based starting fluid, spray some on its air filter, and it come to life much quicker, when starting. I don't miss that truck.

When you have a manual glow control it's good to hold it in for a bit after it starts when it's very cold, helps it get going smoothly much faster.

My grandpa owned a white datsun just like this and my dad called it his little "PJ" or "Pride and Joy" (referring to my grandpa) because of how much he loved that little truck.

brings back memories. whatever you do, don't use ether on it. destroys pistons and heads. some guys in canada have fashioned intake air heaters from yanmar diesels. these heat the air going into the engine to help cold starting. i've also heard that cleaning and lapping the four injector pump discharge check valves and cleaning the injectors helps the cold starts.

Had the same truck in school in the 90s glow plug where shot to but it ran better then that with 450k on it.

My vw diesel will start in -10c easy. Your diesel is running too rich and if your timing is out .05 it will run rough until warm. So check timing on pump with dial indicator and lean out the fuel mixture screw a bit. Also get your injectors pressure test. All these things to be set properly,... it will start in cold weather with no problem.

no I'm correct. they're a fuel enrichment screw on the side of the Bosch ve injection pump. turn it clockwise makes it smoke and more power or anti clockwise for less smoke and less power. look it up.

Sorry now i'm whit you my bad. Since you wrote mixture I thought you meant like an airmixture screw on a carburator. I once had a little newer datsun I think it was a -84 diesel, 70 hp and I adjusted way to much on that fuelscrew, it whent whiskythrottle when I stared it, had to adjust back quite a lot and the only thing that happend was that I covered the whole village in a black cloud lol.

Realistically, clean the injectors, check stuff for leaks. Make sure the airbox has no rats nest in it. Check oil and coolant and also all electrical stuff. New battery, turn the key, let it warm up and just drive

I just started one that sat for 10 years. All it took was fresh fuel, prime the fuel system, and ensuring the glow plug system is working
