Great reenactment. Goes to show the skill of the Argentinian pilots who did it for real. I remember a History Channel show on the war where they'd interviewed some of the pilots, perhaps not from this raid, but from the Sheffield raid. Regardless of which strike it was - that they were able to make the strike at such a distance, find their tankers both ways, etc, demonstrates their skill and determination. In re turbulence affecting different airplanes in close formation: Many years ago and a long ways away (2+ decades, Crystal Airport, in the Mojave desert on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains from LA) I flew gliders - about 120 flights and 80 hours worth. I'd get towed to get airborne - it was a flat fee for the first 1,500 feet, then per hundred feet above that. Flying a glider on tow is all about staying in formation with your tow plane. One of the skills you had to demonstrate was the various tow positions - straight behind tow called "high tow", "low tow" was straight back, but much lower, below the wake of the tow, also one had to demonstrate "boxing the wake" - going from high tow, sideways far enough to keep the wing tip out of the wake, descend down low enough to be the right level for low tow, slide sideways into low tow. Exit low tow to the other side, ascend up to high tow height, but out of the wake the whole time, then side sideways back into high tow. Anyways....the turbulence story - Seeing as my ship was a high aspect ratio glider, and tow was a bit stubbier wing profile converted crop duster, we'd behave differently in turbulence, to say the least - wing loading was also a huge part of that equation. One day, trying to push through some rotor to get to the mountain wave (airfield was on the downwind side of the rotor, so you had to push through it perpendicular to it, closer to the downwind side of the mountains to get to the updraft side where the wave was lift, not sink - it was the first updraft downwind of the mountains). I was getting bounced around "normally" but still doing a reasonable job holding formation. Then we got hit by something big....I lost sight of tow under my nose for a bit. When I pushed the nose down and could see him again, I couldn't see the tow rope, except coming up from well below right at his tail. That meant that I'd been kicked forward way to close to tow and had a TON of slack. I popped the release rather than take chance of getting tangled or the massive jerk, possibly parting one of the two structural "fuse" links in the tow rope. (An alternate procedure my instructor taught me was to put in a big yaw when modest excessive slack developed - as the rope came tight, at it pulled you back straight it would also start speeding you up, absorbing some of the shock). Anyways....I got away clean but was so rattled, I turned back to the airfield ASAP. I landed, collected myself a bit, and asked an instructor to join me - I was flying a rented 2 seat Grob 103 solo from the front cockpit. You get bucked off the horse, you get right back on...but I wanted a "security" blanket, as it were. Hooked back up to the tow, instructor in back, launched and this time punched through the rotor without excessive difficulty. What a sweet feeling it was to get that one last "thump" and then all the sudden be in clean smooth air. A glance at the variometer (numeric rate of climb indicator) confirmed we were in the wave - it went from 300 feet per minute to 1200 plus in only a few seconds. I called tow on the radio, told them I was unhooking, pulled the release and did my break away climbing turn to the right as tow went descending left. Less than 10 minutes later I pulled the spoilers at 12.5k to arrest the climb, the highest one can go for unlimited time without oxygen. At that point, I figured I'd proved to myself I could in fact handle it on a tough wave day, so declared victory and turned back to the field. Besides, the instructor was costing me per the hour and I'd accomplished what I'd set out to do - get right back in there and succeed at getting through that rotor to the wave and getting a nice wave flight. On a later wave day, I used the 1/2 hour allowed by regulation between 12.5 and 14.0 without oxygen to blow past 12.5 and push up to 14.0 before pulling the spoilers and speeding up out of the best climb speed enough to arrest the climb and just hang out. I admired the view for a couple minutes before noting tingling finger tips - which I took to mean incipient hypoxia so laid on full spoilers and a stout side slip after completing the turn back to the field and quickly dropped to 8k or so. I wish I had oxygen that day as I was still climbing at 1,000 feet a minute plus when I pulled the spoilers at 14.0. I suspect I could have made 18.0, the bottom of the Class A airspace where you need clearance from ATC to proceed any higher.

It Screwed the British Land Forces Commander's battle plans massive!!! He had planned to use the Helicopters to move all of his troops to forward positions by air, plus rapidly build a forward operating base for both Harriers and Helicopters that would allowed the British to get Air Superiority over the Islands and never lose it. Had this ship not been sunk the war would have most likely ended at least a week earlier, if not two.

A guy that lived across the road from me when I was young was on the Atlantic Conveyor when it sunk. He survived but it did bring home to me later on how real this war was. As a child in the 80s I remember being a bit excited by the fact we were at war. Later on once I was a bit older I understood the sacrifices made and how lucky my neighbour was to escape that catastrophe. My own Dad had previously been a merchant seaman so it was all the more poignant.

Woodward, the Carrier Group Commander did place logistic ships in front of the Carriers to soak up any Exocet attack that got past the AAW and ASW screens. Using Atlantic Conveyor in that role was very stupid as she had a lot of equipment on board that the Land Forces were relying on. The ship had 10 Helicopters on board when she was hit, Three Chinook, Six Wessex and a Navy Lynx that was being stored. All 10 aircraft were lost. She also took down with her, tents for 10,000 men, a transportable airfield (rolls of metal matting to build a runway and hardstanding's, plus the refuelling equipment and all of the Engineering equipment to build it. Plus around 600 BL755 CBU's and other weapons. Also lost were all of the Spares for the Chinooks.

Nice video, just one thing. After refueling, try to make the approach to the TF below 90ft during the rest of the flight. Then go over 250 for searching the target and let the Exocet do its magic! Right after launching the missile, just head back home at 30.000 ft and when back to base tune BBC to find out what you hit!

@@grimreapers The video is excellent!! I Enjoyed it very much! Also, if you are planning other episodes of Malvinas Conflict, you are not allow to use Flares or Chaffs and also, you only have enough fuel to be On Target no more than 2 minutes, or you will not be able to make back home! There also was a mission, I don't remember which one right now, that one of the Attackers A4s got back to base connected to the tanker only disconnecting almost over the base. That KC Crew were really crazy, when they found out that the pilot was in big trouble, they just went for him into the exclusion area. Other important info, I think that the KCs did not had any Tacan, it was pure coordination and timing! If you ask me, I don't understand how they were able to make what they did!

Each plane is unique as far as what is being displayed on their UFCs, DDIs, MFDs, etc. for the most part all planes share common characteristics as far the HUD goes such as altitude, speed, and direction. My recommendation is going to their channel>playlists>DCS: Tutorials from their you'll see CAP do tutorials for about every single aircraft in the game. He covers everything including HUD and the UFC, MFD, DDI, etc. In my opinion just about any of the American aircraft tutorials will cover the basics of the HUD but for the other parts of the aircraft I recommend searching for that specific plane and looking through the tutorial that covers the part that your curious about. I also highly recommend his tutorial videos as they've been extremely helpful for my own flying. Hope this helps.

@@grimreapers I think as you run models without humans on battles you know the exact results of you can fine tune in the programming variables so that you know the model is pretty accurate. Then you can run the model on something you do not know the rusults of an be fairy confident it is accurate. An example of a mystery to solve may be you have a video of ground to air missle hitting a specific russian helicopter, but you do not know what the exact weapon was. You then run various weapon platforms vs that exact helicopter at the right height, speed, direction, etc and see which looks most similar to the video. So the Atlantic Conveyor normally carried cars between Liverpool and the US, she was 80,000 tonnes. After the war she was replaced with a new ship by the same name and you can still see her every week or so in Liverpool. All in all hitting the Atlantic conveyor was the largest naval success of the Argentinian forces, the exocets at the time weren't particularly sophistocated, likely having flown through the chaff they detected the Atlantic conveyor infront of them and reacquired. As you noted the missile was detected, had Ambuscade been equiped with either a CIWS system or some better missile than the useless Seacat it may well have been shot down. Prince Andrew actually flew his SeaKing alongside to blow the liferafts away from the fire with the helicopter downwash so the people could be picked up. The Super Entendard was carrier capable but the Argentinian Carrier wasn't capable of operating them - she had been due to have her deck modified to enable it but the work wasn't completed prior to the outbreak of hostilities. Love that the weather on this map is generally so appropriate :-)!

Can you do a what if scenario? What if HMS Hood survived the battle with Bismark, spent the rest of the WW2 being repaired and refitted only for the war to end and eventually the ship sold off to the ARA as was the carrier HMS Venerable (renamed ARA Veinticinco de Mayo), upgraded and modernised. Then used in this campaign. That would be interesting.

Um, excuse me, I read the closed captions for your video, and they begin with, "Hello valley viewers...", so I felt I should ask, what about people who can't hear the video, who live in the mountains?

"What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man, You cannot say, or guess, for you know only A heap of broken images..." - T.S. The french Exocet missile really showed the way of future naval engagements, that day. Imagine if they would have had more then just 9 but had 50. That could have changed the war.

Absolutely loved this video, Cap (and the others who helped with research and RC flying), well done. The history was fascinating. While I knew of the sinking I had no idea what lead up to it. I just assumed she was on her own and the pilots found her. You may be aware that there was only one Chinook which was not on the ship at the time. The chinook was to become the legendary 'Bravo November' (all Chinooks had two letters on the front of the forward engine cowling hers were 'BN'), ZA718. ZA718 has now retired from flying but has recently been moved to the RAF museum at Cosford. Forces News covered it kzbin.info/www/bejne/b32xdImme62Yeas I urge you to watch it, it has an excellent story from Tom Kinsella near the end.

I dont think you can compare AAR in DCS to IRL. Yes - there is more turbulence IRL, but at least you feel it (at least in a glider lol - my only experience). I also wonder how stable FBW jets are IRL - on the vids it looks quite stable actually.

The conflict was known as the Falklands conflict as that was and is the internationally recognised name of the island's. Malvinas are what the Argentines choose to call them historically. Similar to China saying that Taiwan is theirs as its in the South China Sea. So please call them the Falklands unless you are playing the part of the Argentinians
