I've found that the best way to prime the pump is to just pull the banjo bolt on top for the fuel return lines and fill it up with diesel to the top. It helps immensely! Looking forward to more vids on this project!

I enjoyed your video!! I live in Chester, UT, but have a sailboat in Cali. This sailboat has a 1983 VW Pathfinder Diesel, which is equivalent to an MK1, found on the 1983 VW Rabbit PU. I'm getting ready to replace the fuel injectors and glow plugs.. My question is - what is the procedure to release the fuel pressure and re-pressure it back up when the injectors are back in the engine?? Thanks!!

Hey have you ever run into any timing belt tracking issues after replacement? Mine keeps tracking towards the diesel pump when I turn the engine over a few times.

One of my injectors is leaking from the lines it appears right on top of the injector, are there little lead balls on top of the injector that can get scratched and cause a bad seal?

I replaced my cylinder head and both cam and engine were at TDC when installed and the pump was pinned. I got it back together and now it won't idle and has heavy black smoke. The pump has two pin holes and I think I pinned the wrong hole. Do you think the pump needs rotated 180 degrees? I did time the pump and its at .95mm. When I disassembled the motor was TDC but the cam was not.

Not sure how it would have ran if the cam was not lines up when you tore it down. These are interference engines so there is little room for error when doing timing belts. If is possible to have the injection pump 180 degrees out and it will not run that way. The injection timing will have a lot to do with smoke and idle.

@@SVsAuto It would not start when I pulled the head.. I've heard the cam rotates twice for everyone one rotation of the crank. The pump was 180 degrees off. I lined up the cam, crank and injector pump, timed pump and now it runs like a champ. It only smokes when you mash the accelerator! Diesel power!! Next will be adding a turbo 😃

Hi, I like your video. I have a 1978 VW Rabbit diesel. I primed itand also added some fuel it crank but won't fire, is there a way to test the injection pump. Thank you.

Where did you find the parts? It's a pretty old vehicle and I may not be knowledgeable on car stuff but I would think that cars made in the 1980s are difficult to work with, especially when it comes to spare parts.

I been having problems with my pump too can you explain about the indicator

There is a mark on the injection pump sprocket as well as a pin hole to get you lined up for the timing belt. For timing you have to twist the pump itself using the gauge.
