Probably one of the first times the Lotto 6/49 logos appeared on the boards at the Forum... Habs did lose 0-5, yes, Tretiak had the shutout! Still was a great game for all those who were there on New Year's Eve 1982!!!

I watched this game live in Toronto. To this day it is the most amazing goaltending by by any goalie that I have ever witnessed. The most memorable part was the triple standing ovation given to Tretiak by the Montreal fans. Unfortunately you cut the video off before that. I have been unable to find the video clip of the triple standing ovation. If you have it would you please post it.

Tretiak didn't score a goal, and Russia still won. What I'm saying is, All their players are better, because they have a better Training program, we have nuts like Don Sherry, rock them and punch them! We love violence, but they love the game of Hockey, pure Hockey, and that is what they have perfected, HOCKEY AT IT'S VERY BEST.
@chrisrybka45664 жыл бұрын
@@tonybenn1000 you could not very more wrong. We have the best players that's why the best Russians play in the NHL not the KHL and his name is not Don Sherry but Don Cherry.

@@chrisrybka4566 No, I think you are wrong here. The best Russian hockey players play in the NHL not because Canada and US have the best players but just because they get much more money playing in NHL.

I was born in Montreal left in 1968 for NJ. The first ver hocky game I was in Montreal was this match. My GF from NJ kept being amazing at the 5+ minute standing ovation for Tretiak just for skating on to the ice before the game even started

This team is the best the world has seen, even up to today. I have no doubt they could beat todays NHL's all stars!
@jimmypye44605 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. They are playing a Montreal team that was a former shadow of itself. What happened new years eve 1975 or against Buffalo in 1980. Against strong NHL teams, Soviets cannot win. Only defeat weak NHL teams.or NHL teams put together for 2 weeks before the game.
@rondeldebbio92195 жыл бұрын
@@jimmypye4460 Rubbish!! What about 6-0 against NHL all stars game 3 Challenge Cup? Much the same team as in 1981 when they beat the best of the NHL 8-1. An absolute wipe out. Make no mistake, between 1979-1984 was the peak of the Soviet national ice hockey team beating the best of NHL on SMALL ice. On international ice it would be even more one sided. Result ...No chance for NHL. Today , a closer result but they would win. They skate better, pass better, and are in constant perpetual motion, and would skate the NHL to exhaustion. Period.
@jimmypye44605 жыл бұрын
@@rondeldebbio9219 Agree to disagree. This same team was defeated by college kids at Lake Placid. in 84 defeated by Team Canada in the semi-finals. Put a Canadian team together for 1 year to play together and condition together and then hold an 8 game series, Canada would win easily. Ron Del Debbio, you're living in dream world, and not comparing apples to apples. The Soviets played together 350 days a year for years with the same coach and system. No such team of NHL pros has that same chance. Now that the Soviet system is no longer in tact, what would we expect to see if my hypothesis in correct? We'd see exactly what we see now. Russia unable to win very much of anything.
@rondeldebbio92195 жыл бұрын
@@jimmypye4460 Nope. Not a chance. "Miracle on Ice' was just that; a Miracle. But it was the last year of the top line Mikilov, Petrov, Harlimov that played international tournaments for the Soviets. A small rebuilding including Makarov, Krutov, Larionov, etc into 1981-1985. Look at the Lac Placid game closely, the Soviets completely outplayed them. Any blind person can see that. Super series 1985 against Edmonton Oilers, 6-3. Edmonton best skating team in the NHL. Not a match for the Red Army. Howie Meeker said the the third period after Krutos most beautiful 3 way passing play goal.. "more skill, deeper skill.. their mobility is just unbelievalbe" That says it all.
@jimmypye44605 жыл бұрын
@@rondeldebbio9219 kinda just skirted right over some of those facts. That's called cognitive dissonance. Google it. No one is denying the skill of the Soviet team or its players. What is being called out is facts around these claims. Fact: they played together as a team and under the same system for extended periods of time. Fact: even when playing together under the same system and apparently having that advantage, they only won 1 of 5 Canada Cups. In one of those Canada cups, Canada's goalie Liut had a brutal game, similar to Tretiak against Buffalo in 1980. But, I don't use that as an excuse. It was Canada's selected goalie. They won in 1979 challenge cup. Granted. The were vastly outplayed by the Montreal Canadiens new year's eve 1975 if not for Tretiak -- and the shameful play of Dryden, the game would have been a massacre. Fact: If you claim to be superior, you cannot have excuses and flukes. Beaten by College kids should not even have been possible. Fact: Against the top NHL teams they generally did not do well. The beat Edmonton in 86 but lost to Edmonton in 83. I'd take Edmonton in an eight game series. I think the Buffalo game and the Philadelphia game in 76 are good representations of how the Soviet composure is shaken when faced against well coached teams.

To start with, this is the USSR National Team vs a Club Team. Second, Montreal finished 5th in the Regular Season standings in 1982-3, and lost in 3 straight games in the first round of the Playoffs to Buffalo. And third, the Oilers and Flames beat the USSR National Team in this Series, 4-3 and 3-2, respectively.
