Ahhhh. I remember that spider web of wires in the headlight pot on my 81 R100RT. What a mess. I couldn't handle the thought of having to change a fuse in the middle of the night, so I relocated the board and all of the wires, to the inside of the left side of the fairing. I took one or two million pictures and had to lengthen some wires, but when it was all wired up...everything worked. I feel a lot better having ready access to my wiring components.

Very informative, a much better way to remove the wiring harness.👍

Bless you, I started rebuilding my R100s 12 years back But cancer put it on hold, now the work in done, I had no idea how the cables and wiring ran through the fram. At last I can stop getting it wrong. Thanks so much. All the best from Scotland.

Todd, You're welcome. I'm pleased to hear you recovered from your ordeal and are getting another airhead back on the road, even if it it's going to be on the left side :-)

@@BrooksAirheadGarage We do get some riders ride on the right, usually on the IOM ,it dose not work out well. Thanks again.

Todd, Indeed, they are on the "wrong" side of the road. I did some riding in South Africa and New Zealand. I did well, but always seemed to get confused in the parking lots. Folks were helpful in pointing me to the correct side of the aisle :-)

This video has been a great help. My '84 R100RS harness for the ignition module has been extended to hang the module from the inner fairing surround panel (??), I suppose it was getting too hot under the tank. I intend to replace the subharness and put it back in its original place. But I wasn't sure where that was! I know now. I also ordered some heatsink compound to apply when relocating back to its original position (another great tip).Thanks again!

I have an 81 R100RT and had an 83 R100RT and both had the Aux power sockets in that same location that looked OE. I've made much use of them for my heated vest! Great videos thanks for producing them.

Hi Edward, Yeah, I've heard from a couple other folks that it's stock, not an add on. Thanks for posting your note.

Thanks a bunch for posting this. Although it is very different than my 91 GS, it is very helpful in figuring out my son's kludged up R65! It's really good to see a mostly stock set up.
@BrooksAirheadGarage5 жыл бұрын
Tom, I'm glad this material was helpful. The R65 wiring isn't too much different, but a lot changed by 91 and the GS electrical system, as was the bike itself, "different" from the other airheads.

Thanks. I find this particularly interesting and identical to my 83" R80RT. I must note, however that the auxiliary power outlet on vid at 1:28 is on my bike is not an add-on but stock and (fused, iirc) oem, though.

Mark, thanks for the input on the auxiliary socket.

Hi Sir ... Please if you don't mind the ask........when you ordered your new harnesses was there any consideration about the new electronic igniton equipment for the bikes....... I am in the process of stripping my R60/6 1974 as it's the bikes looks good it has a lot of neglect every where....... I would like up up grade to a more reliable electronic system also.......just unsure right now if I need any special harness too? I hope your not offended by my questions I know you must be inundated with questions and understand if your busy but thank you anyway.......kind regards Phil

Phil, I’d call Euro MotoElectrics and ask them what you need to convert to an electronic ignition.

Hi Sr. I'm working in my BMW R100 1980. I can't find one connection for one cable in the headlight flasher. This is my only pending I can't find the position for the number 86 to the rest of the terminal block. Do you have the response to help me? I can't find a diagram to check my connections because I changed both commands and I was removing and connecting a lot of cables. Thanks in advance. Marcelo

Brook, A question on the coil wiring...the second coil has a black jumper wire coming from the neg side of the first coil. The second coil also has a double black wire connected. Does the black jumper connect to the pos or neg side of the second coil?
@BrooksAirheadGarage2 жыл бұрын
Jim, the jumper goes between the inside terminals. One is "1" and the other is "15". IIRC, the coil terminals are marked. Said differently, the coils are 6V and are wired in series, so that means the BLACK jumper wire (+) connects to (-)

Good work in your garage. What kind of grease is used at 4:30 for the ignition control module? Thanks
@BrooksAirheadGarage4 жыл бұрын
Hi Leroy, It's a heat sink paste. You can get it at Euro MotoElectrics (www.euromotoelectrics.com/product-p/gel-heat1.htm). It is also used for computers so you may find some at a Best Buy or other place that sells computer components. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the video. May I ask where the fuses / fuse box located on this bike?
@BrooksAirheadGarage4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ti, The two fuses are inside the headlight shell on the top of the connector board most of the wiring connects to.

Can you take the ignition wires and mount a ignition key switch into the headlight?
@BrooksAirheadGarage3 жыл бұрын
Lou, Yes, the /7 model has the ignition switch mounted in the left headlight ear. There is a "plug" used on the RS to mount the headlight ear. It is removed and the ignition switch along with some other mounting hardware fits in the hole in the headlight ear. You can see all the hardware in this link to the MAX BMW parts fiche: shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51647&rnd=09082020 See section "51-Vehicle Trim", diagram(s) 51_2453 and 51_2592.
