Can the original BMW voltmeters be adjusted? I noticed on my 84 R100RS that the BMW voltmeter shows 0.5 - 0.7 volts below what I measure across the battery terminals with a good Fluke voltmeter.

Thank you for all the very useful videos here. I had low oil pressure when engine warm at idle, but actually there was oil pressure. I replaced the conrod bearings to new ones, checked the gaps, both were fine. After I mounted the engine and rotated by the starter motor the pressure gauge did not show pressure. The oil also did not come out from the rockers. I tried to top up the lubricating system through the oil pressure switch hole but nothing happened. Since I had no better idea I dismouted the engine I had the main bearings replaced and sleeved-in the oil filter housing, then machined on the proper sizes for the brand new rotors. These tasks were made by a famous german airhead specialist workshop. I checked all the dimensions after I got back the engine, all were good, so I assembled the engine. All gaskets are new, everything looks good. But the situation is the same: no oil pressure when cranking. I also replaced the spring and the piston of the pressure valve to original new ones. Would you have any idea what can be wrong? thanks in advance
@BrooksAirheadGarage9 күн бұрын
Could be a blocked oil passage to the rocker arms.
@laszlok.96679 күн бұрын
@@BrooksAirheadGarage thanks for the reply. I filled up the oil passage from the left side plug screw at the rear of the engine just below the oil pressure switch. After I did it the pressure gauge went up to 14 psi but no more. The pressure was constant while cranking and the oil came out from all four rockers. But after I stop cranking the pressue never comes back until I made another shot to the passage. So, there should be another reason for that phenomenon.

Great father/son tradition, riding and wrenching together. I have a 1979 R65. Love the bike but performance was an issue so I put the Siebenrock 866 kit, a taller 5th gear and Mikuni carbs and it really goes like heck.

Rather late to this party but I have to add my congrats; exemplary restoration. A couple of questions, if I may, as I have a 1978 model of the same machine. Having once replaced the pitted fork tubes, I decided to fit gaiters, as you have. Unfortunately the gaiter or its clamp has fretted the fork apertures in the fairing, however I positioned the top clamp. Have you found the same, or, if not, how did you avoid it? Next, do you find the twin spark head gives a noticeable improvement over standard, esp given today's lower octane fuels and the advent of 5% or even 10% ethanol (here in EU)?
@BrooksAirheadGarage12 күн бұрын
I had no problem with gaiters affecting the fairing. Fuel mileage is higher with twin plug heads.

So many thanks for your time and knowledge that you gift us old BMW nuts with. I live in South Africa have 9 bikes( BMW r100rs 1983 two BMW r1200gs , one Yamaha xt660z, two Suzuki dl650 vstroms, my touring bikes, and two drz Suzuki 400 one an e the other an sm. in the last year I had two BMW 1200 gs one an 06 the other an 010. That dropped the right hand exhaust valves. Both belonged to friends. The one I purchased as my friend is a crazy man and rode the bike like a super bike so I expected it to be unfixable without a used engine. The other not so bad. Also please understand that I am not a professional mechanic nor a BMW lover, way to complex and unreliable for modern BMW bikes. I am an ex Suzuki dealer from Allentown Pa Allentown Suzuki dealer 1514. We specialised in Suzuki, maico (largest dealer east of the missipi) Ktm, montesa and husqvarna. I have from my past tons of experience ps I never charge my friends for my work. To attempt to simplify my narrative I was able to repair both bikes, if you are interested in the details will be glad to share, a horrible complex rebuild. All done with used parts and now have4,000 kilos on my 06 and runs like a clock, however four months ago rode to Cape Town with an American friend that came here we used both of my 650 vstroms round trip Tzaneen Cape Town and return, four thousand kilos without issue. Recently purchased a 1983 r100rs in six boxes and neglected for ten years. The bike as stored in joburg, no salt no crazy temp variations therefore almost no rust. Bike now running and And a dream. To me almost as easy to repair as a bycycle with a headlight. The clutch slips and the fairing forces my knees between the tank and fairing. Everything is fixable, if not electronic. Sorry for the endless talk. Cheers Pepe limantour

Why not take advantage of everything being open to also change the connecting rod bearings. So cheap and easy. Wonder why Siebenrock does not propose them together with the kit. I had to request them separately for mine.

Your videos have been very helpful in preparing me to confidently inspect and ride back to New Mexico a one-owner 1984 R100RT from Wisconsin on Friday. But I have one question: We seem to be similar height (I'm 6'2-1/2"), and my bike apparently has a slightly taller windscreen. Have you experienced any buffeting at 75~80 mph? If so, did a given angle adjustment help? I ask because I'll be taking the interstate over the weekend due to the need to get back promptly.
@BrooksAirheadGarageАй бұрын
The taller windscreen provides a good air pocket.

When talking about the back edge of the razor "popping up off of the case", mine is off the case a little bit all the way around while resting my blade on the center part with the bolt holes. I tightened my bolts all the way down with the installer tool and I don't think I should try to tighten them any more. Is it normal that there will be a little gap, as long as the gap is uniform?

Dont forget that the collars at the base of the new tubes are able to be tapped up or down so i always tap the collar up the tube then when you fit the cylinder with the new pushrod seal just tap the collar back down to re seat the collar to the seal. The haynes manual gives dimensions to make the seating tool so easily done

Mine had 6 spacer washers on the back of the things that the locating pins go into. Be careful not to lose those! Also, I braced the front cover with a m6 bolt as shown, but my crank still rotated when I used the impact driver to loosen the bolts. Am I correct that it is ok if the crank spins, but we are trying to prevent it from moving back and forth?

My ST stood unused for over 20 years in a German garage. Zero rust. After basic adjustments it runs smoothly, although it would be nice to replace the old dried grease in several places. Thanks to the informations on your YT channel, I will do it. Greetings from Poland. Stay healthy!

Sorry its a bit late to make a comment but i just wanted to know if there is a correct time for the oil pressure to drop when the motor is turned off . I think it woold maybe termed oil pressure decay time. Without a gauge it would be the time taken for the oil pressure light to come on when the ignition is turned off . I realise that it would be quicker whe the oil is hot . Thanks

Is that special tool required to push the timing cover on or could you just turn the engine so the timing components are facing up and then push really hard from above? Then when you put in the bolts won't it seat correctly? That tool is just really expensive from cycleworks so I'm trying to figure out if it is required.

G'day Brook. At 1:10 you describe the 13mm socket fitting "just fine" on the left retaining nut. On my 11/81 RS the rear of that space has a tall lip, unlike the other side. I can fit a 13mm socket onto the nut but not the ratchet onto the socket... no space and the angled attachment doesn't quite do it either. Don't know if you've encountered that of course but do you have a solution? I'm wondering if I should remove/reduce that lip...just enough to get a grip and avoid rounding off the nut. Cheers edit: a smaller socket and ratchet set 1/4” drive fit with the lip and worked.
