The amazing thing about the 1983 Raiders was, that they led the entire league in lost turn-overs, and yet they went all the way & won the championship that year!

Same as the 1979 Steelers. They had so much damn talent, it didn't matter. Plus, they cleaned it up in the postseason when it mattered. That was definitely a team that 'flipped the switch' when the real games started.

They brought it in the playoffs when it mattered most. The Raiders were unstoppable against the Steelers, Seahawks, and Redskins. 0-3 in the regular season versus these opponents. 3-0 in the playoffs.

I watched the 1983 AFC Championships when it was broadcast live on television. At the time, I really hated watching the Raiders dominate. As I look back, I can admire how awesome they were. They were truly a magnificent team!

I beg to disagree with your opinion. I believe that the 1984 San Francisco 49ers were the best and second to that team was the 1989 San Francisco 49ers. I think Joe Montana and Bill Walsh and the 49ers teams of those two seasons were the top two best in NFL history. The 1985 Chicago Bears, in my opinion come in at #3, then the 1983 Los Angeles Raiders. That is just my opinion. I do not believe that the 2007 New England Patriots would have gone 18-0 in the regular season had they faced competition like the 49ers or Bears or Giants or Raiders or Broncos or Dolphins of the 1980s! For one thing, the players were allowed to hit harder in the 1980s than they were in the first decade of the new millennium.

@@steveswangler6373 Agree. 1976 was more of a "team". The 80's was mostly Marcus and a few other key players. I'd take Snake over Plunkett even though Jim won 2 SB's

Greatest Raiders team as far as playoff results. No doubt. One of the great playoff runs ever. Maybe the best considering they were 0-3 versus these 3 opponents during the regular season.

Yes! Marcus was almost all the offense we needed..But the '76 team was a collective effort because we didn't really have a "star". I mean Fred got the SB MVP on 4 snags for 79 yards!

The Great 1983 L. A. Raiders! One thing I will always remember is the Raiders made one of the biggest mistakes in their entire history, that being during the 1983 NFL draft Dan Marino kept dropping down, the Raiders had the 21st pick and Marino was there for the taking, instead, for some strange reason the Raiders passed on him and chose Don Mosebar (who became a great center) with the 22nd pick Miami scooped up Marino and the rest is history. I can only imagine if they would have grabbed Marino (coming in after The Great Jim Plunkett) how many Superbowl's he may have won in the Silver & Black.

Al Davis was so distracted by his lawsuit against the NFL that he wasn’t paying attention to the incoming talent. He was talking to Marvin Demoff (Elway and Marino’s agent) and asked Demoff if Elway was able to throw deep. Demoff said don’t let anyone ever hear you say that.
@steveswangler6373
@steveswangler6373 3 жыл бұрын
the reason Al Davis didnt draft Marino was because he had Marc Wilson and he thought Wilson was going to be great. also, with Marino, the Raiders of the 80's would have won exactly the same amount of Super Bowls they ended up winning. dont forget, Davis was an earlier jerry jones. he couldnt take that Marcus Allen was getting so much attention and he (Davis) wasnt. Davis cut the greatest player in team history playing time, and brought in Bo Jackson (not a bad thing) cutting Allen's touches. also, as the 80's wore on, the Raiders grew old. yes they had youngish players like Long and Townsend, but they also held onto too many players for too long. Marino, being one player, would not have changed that. Marino with Davis' ego, which always loomed over the entire team, would not have won any more than he did with a legendary Don Shula. not to mention, LA is where the Raider Mystique went to die.
@steveswangler6373
@steveswangler6373 3 жыл бұрын
@@offspringfan1288 apparently you forget that Al Davis turned on Marcus Allen and cut his playing time significantly. that is why he brought in Bo Jackson. instead of having two of the best runners, davis had Allen become a blocking back. the Raiders would have won just as many Super Bowls with Marino as the Dolphins did.

@@steveswangler6373 Facts. Being too stubborn to move on from Marc Wilson cost him the extension of his dynastic 80's Raiders. They could've competed with the 49ers, Bears, and Giants if Marino was the QB from 1985-1988.

Only six players were on all three Raiders' SB champions. Cliff Branch, Ray Guy, Ted Hendricks, Dave Dalby, Steve Sylvestre and Demarcus Lawrence. The Cowboys and Raiders won SB's with fundamentally different rosters, unlike the Steelers who crammed in four titles with essentially the same personnel. Different types of dynasties, neither better or worse. Neither Dallas nor Oakland could defend their SB's llike Pittsburgh did, but the Steelers didn't come close (1972-1984) to the sustained excellence of the Cowboys and Raiders who successfully retooled from the mid-1960's to 1985.

This 1983 Raiders team crushed my Steelers 38-10 in the Divisional Round, 1/1/1984. Watching this Raider team crush the hapless Redskins 38-9 in S.B.18 my only wish almost 40 years later is that it would have been the 49ers getting spanked. This 1983 Raider team was one well oiled machine, that as a Steelers fan is one of my favorite sports teams of all time. In the immortal words of Al Davis during the Superbowl 18 post-game interview: "Not only in my opinion are you the greatest Raider team all time, I think you're ranked with the great teams of all time that have ever played any professional sport" Well said Al. R.I.P. Al Davis.

In the first playoff game, the Steelers scored an early FG to take a 3-0 lead. The Raiders came right back with a TD to lead 7-3 after one. At halftime, the Raiders led 17-3. They would lead 31-3 in the third and finish the third up 38-10. That was the final score as well. In the second playoff game, the Raiders led 3-0 after one and 20-0 at the half. They would go up 27-0 in the third and close out the third up 27-7. They would go up 30-7 before winning 30-14. In the Super Bowl, LA led 7-0 after one and 14-0 in the second before heading to the half up 21-3. Washington would make it 21-9 in the third, but LA came back with 14 more in the third to go up 35-9 before winning 38-9. The Raiders outscored opponents 17-3 in the first and 41-3 in the second for a total of 58-6 at the half. The Raiders outscored opponents 42-20 in the third for a total lead of 100-26 after three. +74 over 3 games. +25 average per game. Opponents outscored LA 7-6 (a paltry 1 point) in the fourth when all 3 games were long-since settled. LA led by as much as 28 twice versus Pittsburgh, including the final score. The Raiders led by as much as 27 and then 23 against Seattle before winning by 16. Washington only narrowed to within 12 in the third before LA responded with 14 unanswered on the next two drives and a fourth-quarter FG to cap off a 29-point win. We talk about the dominance of the 72 Fins, 78 Steelers, 85 Bears, and 89 Niners. But the 83 Raiders playoff run is right up there with all-time playoff greatness. The Raiders suffocated and buried three worthy opponents and made each of them look foolishly overmatched. The Steelers, Seahawks, and Redskins were 3-0 versus the Raiders during the regular season. They combined to score 109 points in 3 games versus LA. In the playoffs, they scored only 33 points. 109-33=76 fewer points. The Raiders had scored 92 points. They improved on that total to 107 points. +15 points.

As a fan since 1975 this is painful to watch in 2022. Why can't we assemble a team like this anymore? Instead we get guys who stay for 2 years and leave or we let them walk. Example: We let Alec Ingold walk to Miami! He could have easily been the next Kenny King/Frank Hawkins but nope....I bet this is Josh Jacobs last year here also. Haynes, Hayes, Vann Mclroy? We haven't had a true ball hawk since Terry McDanials..We don't go for the pick like we used to. Now we let the receiver catch the ball THEN tackle him. The other sorry thing to see is this was before the NFL really stuck it to us, and continues to do so. This team could have had many more wins in the last 20 years if the NFL was an honest organization.

@Survival 1 when you have only 1 league championship(AFL) to your name, i guess you have to grasp onto anything you can to take pride in. especially after all those times the Raiders kicked the chargers asses. and the chargers spent 56 years in san diego. 5 (and counting) in LA. so what was your point? oh yeah, that one championship? that was in san diego, after the chargers had left los angeles because they couldn't compete with the Rams' popularity. quick quiz, which AFC west team has not won multiple Super Bowls? Raiders-3. Chiefs-2. Broncos-3. chargers- a single losing visit to the super bowl. but hey, you have that shield and original LA team thing right? LOL (and that losing super bowl game was as san diego- NOT LA. "The Los Angeles r the true original L.A. born team playing for the original birthplace and not too many teams can claim that fact!" so what first of all. second of all, the chargers left LA for 56 years. but hey, 5 out of 61 isnt bad huh? in the AFC West , Denver Broncos are in their original city. AFC-Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars NFC Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers. 18 teams. all teams that are in their birth cities. and all of them have played many more than 5 years in their cities.

The Chargers name and logo was created originated in Los Angeles 1960 L.A. memorial Coliseum ⚡️🐴 🏈 The name originated from the USC football games then musician and team kicker Tommy Trojan played and helped inspire then owner Barron Hilton when Hilton attended the USC football games at the LA Coliseum every time Tommy would run out to the field to attempt the extra point kick the USC fans would yell out Tommy’s Charge! Chant he created as a musician “Da Da Da Da Trojan Warriors Charge!! So that’s we’re Barron Hilton got inspired for the name from that Da Da Da Charge! Chant The proof is in the Battle Horse charging into battle hence the battle horse inside the original Chargers 1960 shield logo very similar to a USC Trojan warrior Charging into battle with a Sword and shield. The lightning bolt came from Barron Hilton liking the Air Force college team logo. Till this day that Charge! Chant is heard at the games and through out other sporting events. Da Da Da Da Charge! The Los Angeles r the true original L.A. born team playing for the original birthplace and not too many teams can claim that fact! The Rams were born in Cleveland.
