This was one of Zinka Milanov's great roles (I have two live recordings from the Met in the 40's) How moving to see her seated behind them and obviously mentally singing along. She wipes a tear from her eye toward the end.

John Mitchell I saw that too it was so touching. What a great spinto voice she had incredible long career. It is sad one great artist give their whole life to an art form and it seems so unnatural to age and lose that beautiful voice. Now leontyne is 91 years old and papparoti has passed. Let's reflect on that. It was a beautiful day

Pav is surprisingly inspired here, along with the beauty of his voice. And Price, despite her age, shows why she was the queen of Verdi singing.

Most don't know today (2024) that this was the last performance of the event besides singing Happy Birthday to the Metropotiltan Opera that fall afternoon in1983. I stayed in my dorm room to watch the whole thing and was entranced by all the great performances, and leaped up when I saw this finale!

I heard both of them at separate times in concert. Price had a huge, beautiful voice. And Pavarotti's voice was also beautiful, and I assure you that it could be heard very well in a large auditorium of 2500 seats. I heard Sutherland in concert at the same theater. I was sitting in the in the back row of the top balcony, and her voice was so huge that it almost knocked the back wall of the theater down!

Actually, her performance is exquisite. Price never handled the Verdi orchestra, chorus and other colleagues with power. The radiance of her voice, distinguishable waking in the middle of the night in the midst of a raging storm, is enough to resound against the flood of the musical tapestry around her. Her voice is a dazzling diamond river flowing in a golden ocean under a blazing sun, completely distinguishable and utterly beautiful. She IS Verdi and takes Pavarotti to school.

Critics be damned! Price is an artist through every cell in her body. Her voice and style are UNIQUELY hers, and I, for one, love it. Had the thrill of first row seats on two separate occasions in Orlando, Fl for her concerts with FSO. Met her twice backstage and can tell you she is generous and kind beyond my space to convey in this post. A truly remarkable spirit with the voice of an Angel.

The execution of this performance was absolutely Beautiful. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about!? There is not much to critique regarding this performance. These are both Musical Genius' in their own right. Their interpretation and understanding of the piece is clearly obvious. The marriage between the two voices blends perfectly, like Peanut Butter and Jelly! Any negative critique boils down to Semantics, preference, or PERSONAL Bias! This is Beautiful Singing. Period.

I love this performance. I saw it live. I love all the greats behind them loving them, knowing every note of music and cheering them on. Some who had sung it themselves. Yes I wish that they had held the last note longer so that La Price could have gotten her trademark crescendo right before the release in, but we have this. God bless them for this glorious performance.

These two people did SO much for Opera ...and were truly incredible artists. How can you criticize them? And the fact that you call Pavarotti's voice 'a lyric almost small voice tenor" proves that you never heard it live. It was not as 'deep' as some, say Domingo, for example.. But it was every bit as large.

I loved this...I think Leontyne Price and Pavarotti were two of the ULTIMATE singers EVER. I think on this particular night Miss Price might have been slightly ill or tired - but still - this was HIGHLY enjoyable. They both were in character so intensely! I remember when this 8 hour gala came on TV in 1983 - this was at the end of the second broadcast - and I loved the way they ended it on a High C!

The Caballe/Carreras duet and the Horne Samson aria is the definition of the art of singing. Sutherland had the biggest entrance ovation. She had an off day..a horrid "Bel Raggio" and the audience reacted as such. Price and Pavarotti had the finale and so they got a big ovation. I still think the Caballe/Carreras duet and Horne's solo aria is the best of this Gala.

Isk Youyousova...Pavarotti did touch me...and in not so nice a way (no, dirty minds...not like that). He whacked me out of his way in rehearsal for Boheme at San Francisco Opera when I sang in the chorus there. He was a mean man with a great voice. He refused to listen to directors, went wherever he wanted to and did some rather naughty things to his sopranos on stage (at moments when no one could see). However, he had an undeniably great voice as does Price. She's my favorite, really and I love this performance of this stunning duet... as well as the opera! I remember watching this whole gala on TV when I was in college.

per lei...you're a seriously disturbed person to write such a pathetic comment. I don't care who you are...no one has the right to treat people badly. And there is no such thing as a little person with little feelings. As it happens, I performed roles at SF Opera in addition to being in the full time chorus and am an award winning composer whose music is being performed all over the world. Yet, it doesn't matter if I was a stagehand, costumer, caterer or anyone on the street, all of us deserve to be treated with basic decency. And I wouldn't rush to call Pavarotti a genius. He was blessed with a lovely voice, but not much else. Not a great artist or actor. He refused to do roles that challenged him in any way...partly because he didn't really read music. I was, however, very fortunate to work with many great artists I would call genius.

I have two favorite moments in this video, both involving the "old guard" sitting behind Price and Pavarotti. The first is from 5:06 to 5:17, where Theodore Uppman and Margaret Roggero are caught frozen in rapture at Price's singing, and the other is from 7:25 to 7:52, where Zinka Milanov goes into what looks like her personal nostalgia regarding this opera. You can see that she is really moved not so much by the singing, but by her own memories of singing the role.

+Paul Goulet I disagree about her being 'disconnected' from Pav because "she never acknowledges his presence"; I guess you see what you want to see. What I see is that once she finishes her 'lines' (finishes her part of the duet) the great Pav then responds to what she just sang. The camera shows her facial expressions responding to what he is singing to her - she is NOT ignoring him, though granted, there's no eye contact made. Keep in mind this is a concert performance, not a fully staged opera. Both singers are focused on singing to the audience rather than each other, as they would do if in a fully staged opera. Very minor quibble. I very much enjoyed the video clip! Two stupendous artists!! Thank you!

This was glorious, glorious, glorious! Any missteps must be forgiven. To sing as if the world is watching is totally courageous. As to comments that Price was aloof: You must be focused first on your vocal tones and language and acting through the voice. Physical acting is way down the list in concert format. Did the naysayers want Leontyne to upstage herself and turn around? He was over her shoulder the whole time, and her face interacted with him beautifully. I have to say to the severe critics ... Go ahead and do it yourself. Bitte.

Let me simplify this even further. If someone is in or out of tune, this is something that can be measured and proven scientifcally. The matter of who is a better or greater artist, especially when discussing the caliber of Price and Pavarotti, one could go on ad infinitum as to who she thinks is the better. Got it?
