Heard him in my first ever L' Elisir d'Amore as a beautifully sung and wonderfully funny Dulcamara with Pavarotti in great voice - the two of them together were glorious. (Of course they recorded La Boheme together for Karajan). Then he stepped in for Falstaff under Sir Colin Davis which was unforgettable. The singing again fantastic, but he brought great Verdi style, humour and pathos to the role. He was 70 then and went on to record it with Sir C. Again he had sung Ford to Gobbi's Falstaff recording for Karajan. The voice wasn't of the scale of a Sherrill Milne's, but his projection was extraordinary. Never forget he was the Count de Luna with Callas as Leonora in Karajan's first commercial recording of Il Trovatore in 1957!!

Excellent. As an agi g singer myself, i can say that the BREATH is the first thing to go. Long phrases become difficult or impossible . Sustained tones too. Thats the reason he seems to cut off the ends of phrases or it gets shouty. When he is in the upper register its great. And he as stamina and energy ( the 2nd thing to go)

Even in his prime he was not one of the great individualistic singers, the kind who do not just sing the written lines, but also add personal twists to express their unique emotions and perspectives. Nevertheless, he was a first rate singer who sang everything solidly, sort of like Merrill and MacNeil. And his voice was one of the greatest baritone sounds ever. All in all, I have always felt that he was underappreciated, and should have received far more oppotunities to sing in the very top opera houses. Generally, the perfectly natural singers who never strain their voices, are the ones who preserve their instruments until very late in life.
