(Re-uploaded in higher quality, in HD and in one piece. I do not have the full intro to this show unfortunately, if I ever end up finding it then I will probably re-upload this again at some point in the future.) Air date: 8/27/1983. In what was the 8th overall Candlepin Bowling Championship show featured on Channel 5, this particular event was the first telecast to feature a total of five bowlers instead of two, with the five bowlers in this show having thrown the highest three string totals to make the program since the previous Championship show in September of 1982.
The top five bowlers featured in this show were: Tom Olszta, Tom Morgan, Hugh Ferguson, Tom Cennami, and Det Klein.
This is no doubt one of my favorite Championship shows to watch and one of the best ones too overall. Even though this show started off a bit slow, things REALLY picked up down the stretch in all of the matches, with great shot making, great scores, and VERY exciting finishes as well.
Hope you all enjoy, R.I.P. Don Gillis, Tom Morgan, and Hugh Ferguson.

Thanks for this video. The candlepin bowling brings back many memories from the Sixties and Seventies on the lanes around Portland, Maine.

I've never had the opportunity to candlepin bowl, but when you see the top bowlers in that sport, sometimes not be able to knock down 10 pins with 3 shots, you know it's a tough game. I don't think I would fair well at candlepin bowling. Love watching it though. Thanks for sharing

WOW!! Incredibly that was 40 years ago!! Tom Olstza bowled his usual champion caliber 149.Tom Morgan also bowled excellent 4 strings 128 139 134 120. Very good to watch Tom Cenami, too bad he lost 129-128, however i so remember back in 1973,no one was hotter than Tom in the summer of 1973,believe he was the first bowler ever to roll 3 consecutive 400s and even hit the 1 7 10 jackpot,he steamroller 8 weeks in a row, Also I spoke witn Tom at a 1983 Red Sox game,he says 'I know you seen me on TV'. Excellent performances and superior sportsmanship all around.

Don Gillis commented on how rare it was to make the spread eagle. My dad was one of the few to do it, on the show that aired on 7/3/76. I don’t think any of those old episodes are still around, sadly.

At 101:00 tom morgan looking at an impossible spare rolls the ball and just before it hits someone in the crowd yells "make the shot" and he made it. That was priceless.

Wolfman12395 thank you for showing this from my home lanes where I dominated as junior leagues!!! God look how SAMMY WHITES BRIGHTON BOWL was trying to change from the Brunkswick set up in the 1970's from the 2000 set up as the final change over in it's last years. Notice the ball return. Then go to the following year how it changed.

Klein was throwing way to hard. When Morgan slowed down a bit his accuracy improved. I’d be playing for spares in this game as it seem strikes are more a result of luck than skill.

What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here? New englanders can't afford real bowling?

Sure, a kid can roll the ball. But in every other way, this game is harder. You’re looking at how difficult the pin action is, how rare even spares are, and how easy it is for a slight error to make even the best miss the mark. That unforgiving difficulty is exactly why we consider this the challenge and why many laugh at the walled-up shots of the other game.

Thousands of regular bowlers have bowled a 300 by now. So many that it barely means anything anymore. Heck, I only bowled for about a year as an adult, topping out at a very modest 160ish average, and I managed to get the front 8 with a house ball once. In candlepin, the all time record is a 245. These scores are way more accurate of a measure of the bowlers' actual skill levels than regular bowling is and it's actually a big deal when someone bowls a 200.
