Dukkha (Pāli; Sanskrit: duḥkha; Tibetan sdug bsngal) is a Buddhist term commonly translated as "suffering", "anxiety", "stress", or "unsatisfactoriness".[a] The principle of dukkha is one of the most important concepts in the Buddhist tradition. The Buddha is reputed to have said: "I have taught one thing and one thing only, dukkha and the cessation of dukkha." The classic formulation of these teachings on dukkha is the doctrine of the Four Noble Truths, in which the Truth of Dukkha (Pali: dukkha saccã; Sanskrit: duḥkha-satya) is identified as the first of the four truths.
Dukkha is commonly explained according to three different categories:
The obvious physical and mental suffering associated with birth, growing old, illness and dying.
The anxiety or stress of trying to hold onto things that are constantly changing.
A basic unsatisfactoriness pervading all forms of existence, because all forms of life are changing, impermanent and without any inner core or substance.
The Buddhist tradition emphasizes the importance of developing insight into the nature of dukkha, the conditions that cause it, and how it can be overcome. This process is formulated in the teachings on the Four Noble Truths.

if that doesn't make one depressed, i don't know what will! * brahms talks for the public are fun and sprinkled with digestible wisdom * retreat talks for laypeople are somewhat deeper but still uplifting * but those dhamma talks for monastics are downright depressing, anti-life, nihilistic except/plus hopelessness and despair. makes buddhism look like a worse-than-death-cult even though i parctise/study buddhism for some time now, when i get too much of that sort of attitude, i deliberatley distance myself for a while. that's not skillful effort, at least not where i'm at in 'my'/this journey... thanks for this older talks/content by the way, cheers

Do you know where I could find those talks to monastics? There used to be a channel full of them, but I think it’s since been deleted because I can no longer find them

@@philipdial1652 Well, first, it's just my observations that Ajahn Brahm adjusts his way of speaking depending on the audience. (Read all his books, listened to many talks..) Others might not, you know. And that monks and laypeople are 'motivated' by different things seems obvious too, hence my initial post. * the 10 talks by Ajahn Brahm on this channel were given to monastics, in the context of the annual rains retreat if I recall correctly. so you already have some of what you are looking for * the book "The Sound Of Silence - The selected teachings of Ajahn Sumedho" explicitly contain both, talks given to lay folks and monastics * the book "Food For The Heart - The collected teachings of Ajahn Chah" also contain both, but not explicit, but it becomes aparent while reading/studying * check out the channel "BSWA Retreats 2011-15 & Media" (it has changed it's name several times in the past), there are a lot of 10 day retreat talks by Ajahn Brahm dating back many years. these are for lay meditators and very good and in depth if you ask me, I learned a lot from them! hope this helps

We react like that (I do too) when our afflictive emotions are still too strong. So we should develop Por foundations first (generosity, morality, samadhi)... 🙏

Reality, apparently, is a shock for many - especially males who have been told they are free to do as they like without care for consequences.

If Dhamma talk is causing you confused, it only means that you are not ready yet. You might want to keep listening to the talks you like from Ajhan and keep up with practice of kindness, giving, meditation, and follow the five precepts. After several years, you might come closer to understand the four noble truths better. Just some patience and time to prepare yourself to taste the true happiness through pure dharma. It is not hopeless but hopeful because this is the way to be happy. Death is just in front of our face every second, but we don't want to look at it. Pain in the body is always there, but we try to run away from it without investigating it. This kind of attitude to problems will never solve problems and will never reach real peace and worry-free. Just like your mortgage bill, you have to face it and pay it every month in order to be debt free, You cannot be debt free if you avoid looking at the bill or does not even know there is a bill and only feel frustrated why the bank wants to take your house; Life is taken away by death over and over again. you have to face suffering and admit that it exists and investigate it to gain kindness, endurance, stillness, and wisdom to be suffering free.. This is the only way- see dukkha , see the cause of it, and stop the cause in order to stop dukkha, follow the specific path- eight noble paths. just follow the 8 paths, it is not hard. don't have to think it over and over, but follow the path and walk.

Buddha never told the whole truth. Dukkha is pankupadankhanda (that which creates 5 element). Which creates 5 elements? That is cosmic one. The king of flesh, of this world, really the king if death. Who conquer this death? A saint who surrenders to Highest than him, the king of flesh. That's why they beg, discarding the world and it's object, the property of king of flesh. A saint is true, who know he die before death, as lamb of God. A saint sacrifice his life to get rid of suffering of this world. A saint is sacrificial person. Buddha is called as The great deceased, Jesus as Lamb of god. Same as sacrificial person. Here Dukkha doesn't only mean suffering of oneself but of the whole world, this only rare one can understand. A saint is one who holds world's suffering on his head. Nirvana doesn't really mean you will get very beautiful or marvellous thing. You just sacrificed yourself at the feet of Lord to heal the world. That's the real meaning. Buddha's eightfold path.
