Awesome video. When I was collecting this was a very rare series. The '84 Donruss with the Mattignly rookie was very much sough to after, but a little five-and-dime near my house sold them, and I bought them out every time I got my my paper route money. I probably had a dozen Mattinglys and the other highly sought after cards in that series, and even put together a complete set from way packs, which is not easy. This brings back memories. I enjoy watching you open old packs. Takes me back in time.

this is whats called a potpourri box. bunch of loose packs to make a full box. that is why unopened box from a sealed case is a premium. what happens is that a fresh box, the packs get opened.....the mattingly card gets hit....the likelihood of hitting another mattingly in that box is very unlikely, so the remaining packs stay unopened and sold off or mixed in with other packs to make a full box again. i didn't like seeing so many of the common doubles. i remember this year in donruss which had good distribution of not getting too many duplicates from a single box.
@sirpuss5887
@sirpuss5887 5 жыл бұрын
jeremy s Doesn’t mean anything. I believe what the original comment had stated. It’s a bad box. Random packs taken from other wax boxes, or just packs that never made it into a wax box. So many duplicates. He got hit hard. At least the box before wasn’t looked through.
@golfmaniac007
@golfmaniac007 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeremys5904 the authentication part you have to believe that every single pack was not opened. thats the authentication part of that. thats why BBCE charges more for boxes from a sealed case and they note the authentication that the box was from a sealed case.

I would rank this one the most attractive set of the 80’s as well. Followed by 1984 Fleer and then 1985 Donruss. Side note: even the card backs are amazing. For some reason the pastel color really works with this set.

This was a cool design... 1984 was a great year... Tigers won the World Series... what a great year for my city with a NCAA hockey title, townie Scottie Hamilton winning the skating gold, and our high school (and my brother) taking the state hockey title... also a Legion baseball title for myself -- fun to remissness... love 1984

Call me skeptical about that box. It’s either a remnant cobbled together box like another viewer mentioned, or they just missed the reseals. The way the packs opened seemed fishy to me. Having lived through the Mattingly search craze in 86-87 I got to see all sorts of clever tricks to re-seal these. Scraping the actual wax off of wrappers that get too damaged while trying to open them, then sprinkling that on to the flaps and using a warm iron and a spatula, or a modified soldering iron with a metal plate that mimicked the machines at Donruss. Wonder what BCE would say if their experts watched the way the wrappers seemed extra sticky in the center? Might get them to send you one from a sealed case next time?
@bens1266
@bens1266 5 жыл бұрын
I've alluded to this in one of his previous TBT videos with a key wax box from BCE. My comment disappeared a couple days later. Go figure. Nobody wants to admit how easy and prevalent box mapping and/or re-sealing was back then. BCE "authenticity" is worthless.
@WaveofCards
@WaveofCards 5 жыл бұрын
@@bens1266 It can be done. It's very tough to make the folds look *perfect* though. At first glance, yes. But when you really look at the folds on re-seals you can almost always see the loss of crispness, or the fold isn't quite as tight and sharp as it should be.

By 1990 all this stuff had been searched. I remember walking in a card shop in 1990 and they must have had a dozen cases of 87 Fleer, by that time you didn't see quantities of 87 Fleer anymore, I got a little excited until I realized every case had been opened, didn't even bother looking at the boxes.

No big hits. Wow. Picked the wrong box at the National. I bought two packs on EBay about a year ago and got a Strawberry that came back PSA 9.5 and a Mattingly that came backs PSA 9. Baseball card packs are like the lotto or a slot machine. You never know when you get a big hit. I think in 84-85 I had to buy a pack of Donruss every time I went to the card store for a few months before I hit the Mattingly. Probably 10-12 packs out of several different boxes.
