FYI, most rotary compressors are not mounted on springs, internal or external. One exception are the Seeger compressors, which are rotary, made and used by Whirlpool, which have internal spring mounts. Most reciprocating compressors are spring mounted. Some examples include the Tecumseh S, J, AU, AJ, AH, AE, AK, CL, etc. which are internally sprung and the Tecumseh B and F which are externally sprung. General Electric designed some of their rotary compressors to be mounted on external springs to reduce the vibrations inherent with rotary compressors. My 27000 BTU General Electric G-series unit (aka Dual Thrust) has a large GE Louisville 2-1/2 hp rotary compressor mounted on color-coded springs to identify the spring tension to evenly support the compressor’s weight. Externally sprung compressors should be bolted down on its mounts or a wood block, or in the case of the GEs, the shipping bolt should be replaced and threaded into the bottom of the compressor’s body, when shipping or moving to prevent damage.

GE definitely made some funny design choices over the years, but you can't argue with the performance and longevity of much of their equipment.

One downfall, they love to rust out! Especially any of their units that sit in a plastic case. Other than that they are great runners

That's a sweet find! I know the enthusiasts always like the recips, but that has to be the best sounding rotary I've ever heard and overall is astonishingly quiet. It's sad what happened to GE, thanks to Welch and Immelt. You say the second choice needs a transformer? I know a guy who might be named Kevin 😉

Nice find a old car lot down the road had one but it had no charge they bypassed the thermostat so the compressor always ran I've been trying to find one as well

Question on the compressor, my JC Penny rebadge Superthrust has a center bold holding the compressor to the base pan. Is this a shipping bolt that needs to be removed?

If your unit uses an external spring mounted compressor, then it does.

Love that GE! Honestly, that grille looks better like that. If if it were the woodgrain panel one i would agree, but i have seen 1 or 2 like this and this grille looks better modified. Thats just me tho. I may have a spare of the older one. Ill have to check tho to be sure. The rust isnt too bad on this one for what they usually are. Nice find!

So, what would you use? This one, the larg EQK or the special unit in my living room? Figure quieter the better

@@kenb1918 Large EQK. Both have quality rotaries and are units of high quality, buth among the best of their era. Now my opinion may be a bit biased, but i do really like the GE units too. Id say go for the quieter runner. That GE isnt that badly rusted, but thats even more of a reason to gut it and do an easy restoration so it never does get bad. The damage is starting but its not too severe yet, its a great candidate for a full restoration.
