Hey Ken, As far as I know, in 1952 the Fedders room air conditioner you have was manufactured only in a 3/4 ton model. There was a 1/2 ton version of a different chassis design. A one ton console model was also available. Starting in 1953 Fedders made 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton models on the same style chassis.

We had a Weather Maker from the early 70s that was in a Pool House. It was HUGE and actually worked too well! You could hang meat in that space where it was located! Ours had Two Motors. One for the Fan and one for the inside Blower. It was interesting to run it in fan mode and not hear a sound from the unit outside. Although the compressor was somewhat loud on the outside, the unit was so well insulated you just heard a "Hum" inside when it was running.

FYI, In 1960 Emerson started to make a few heat pump models. They used a standard defrost-on-demand de-icer thermostat. They continued to use this arrangement in 1961. Then in 1963 Emerson changed to the defrost timer.

I'm surprised that something with 8,000 BTUs didn't have an AJ. It had just been conceived by Tecumseh about 3 years prior to this Emerson, and were an instant hit for 8k+ BTU units. I always thought that the pancakes were more for tiny compact window units rated at 5k or less. Also, purist schmurist. Keeping the box itself original is more important than how new the plug is. Running a unit safely doesn't prevent it from looking awesome. I just replaced my '66 Welbilt's power cord with a brand new one with a test/reset switch because the old one looks a lot like yours on that Emerson, with a crapton of corrosion to boot. Awesome unit! Good luck running a comb through that condenser.
@johncantwell8216
@johncantwell8216 Жыл бұрын
The Pancake compressors started out as a line of very small units for water coolers, etc. as shown in the 1955 Tecumseh catalog. But then they started making them bigger and bigger: Philco used a pancake on its 230V 12000 BTU Space Saver model until 1965. And in the Emerson service manual for 1959-1960, it looks like they were using a pancake on their 14000 BTU 230V model.

@@johncantwell8216 I had no idea. Weird. I suppose that making a space saving compressor for a larger capacity makes sense, considering my Welbilt 11k BTU is truly massive with its AJ. I did not know that they were able to make such flat high capacity compressors as early as the '60s.

@@johncantwell8216 In 1959 Emerson’s highest capacity unit was a ’Tru-Slim’ model at 10,800 BTU which used a Tecumseh ‘B’ compressor. The highest capacity unit Emerson made in 1959 & 1960 using a Tecumseh ‘AU’ pancake compressor was a ‘Kool Mount’ model at 10000 BTU. In 1961 Emerson did make a 13000 BTU ‘Kool Mount’ model using a Tecumseh ’AU’ pancake compressor. In 1962 Emerson made a 14000 BTU ‘Kool Mount’/‘Multi-Mount’ model using a Tecumseh ‘B’.

@air_conditioner_man
@air_conditioner_man Жыл бұрын
Hey Ken, This is a 1963-64 ‘Multi-Mount’ model intended to be window or transom mounted using a cradle type frame or mounted through-the-wall using a sleeve. It is rated at 7800 BTU cooling and 8000 BTU heating. That device you pointed out is not a choke coil but the defrost timer which as you probably know operates in the heat pump mode to minimize ice buildup on the outside coil. At predetermined intervals, the defrost timer interrupts current to the solenoid coil of the reversing valve and the fan motor. This sends hot gas to the outside coil for defrost and stops the fan motor to keep cold air from blowing into the room. Then after this interval, normal heat pump operation is resumed. Emerson designed their heat pumps to only work in heat pump mode above 45°F. This unit is well worth restoring and from what you show in your video doesn’t appear to be in bad shape except for the condenser fins which are in bad shape. It will take patience to straighten out those bent and damaged fins.
