1984 Jeep CJ7 258 w/Howell TBI

I'm in Los Banos, Calif, and I installed this same kit on my 85 Cj7...it runs, but now I've got two dead cylinders and cannot find a machine shop and/or mechanic from here to San Jose that'll take the motor out, rebuild it, and reinstall it in the Jeep...so it sits in my driveway, the most expensive, best lookin lawn ornament I' ever ever seen....

This Jeep is still running perfect. It’s enjoying its time in Texas now. Has gone thru some other updates but a super reliable Jeep and fun to drive.

I have this in my 1985 Jeep CJ-7 but won't pass a smog check. It has a 4.0 YJ cylinder head and a YJ exhaust manifold. Would that be the problem? Thanks.

Did u do the wiring. I'm doing the same kit and the wiring in the instructions is not very good at explaining it.

I've got the Howell tbi installed on my 85 cj7. I'm about to order the dui soon. Could you email me the dui instructions? Also what did you set the timing at with the dui and Howell setup?

Was wondering did you have to adjust the fuel pressure? The kit we just installed is running way to rich and won't idle. I saw another video where they adjusted the pressure to fix the issue

You've gotta run a regulator on your fuel line, I do, even though this Howell unit has a regulator within it....

No it does not, you've got to run a spacer and an aftermarket air cleaner...

Nice video. I'm doing the same thing on my Jeep. I'm looking at removing the Pulse Air System (2 large diameter tubes coming off the back of the air filter assembly) When you remove them, how far back did you take it to remove. The tube that goes to the passenger side goes down to a valve and wraps under the engine and eventually ties back in to the Exhaust, just below the flange. The other tube on the driver side goes down to a valve and ties back into the catalytic converter. Since you installed a new Catalytic converter, it seems you didn't need to tie the Air Pulse System back in. What would you have done if you didn't get a new Cat? Also, have you had any issues with the DUI system in terms of smog? Thanks

Thanks for the video! I also have a 1984 CJ7 and live in California as well. I have my Howell kit ordered and on the way, but haven't decided on a distributor yet. I think the D.U.I. isn't smog legal in California, but it looks like that's what you've installed here. Did you pass smog with this in, or did you have to swap back to your original distributor (or get something else)?

@@carlosgiangrasso8505 Man, I m going through this now. 6 different spots, including "smog chek" in Anaheim which specifically charges more for older vehicles, just gave me my money back, and said try another place. On the phone, straight out rejection. Even dependable off-road suggested a place for me to try, & they said no. Nobody even wants to try to smog my jeep. One place in Anehiem, lady started to write me up, Tech came running out saying they are all out of certificates and the machine broke! 🤥 I am waiting for the ref to call me on May10 to schedule a visit with the them. SMH, such a headache! And I have it all ready, jeep runs great! Just can not get anybody to actually run the jeep through the machine. They are all terrified because the jeep failed before...Hilarious, but extremely frustrating!

@Carlos Giangrasso yes, my Howell kit was not the problem, but the distributor was. I since have the correct distributor and all, even went through a couple of EGRs that failed. The jeep runs great now, but nobody will even look at it. I called Howell for a recommendation to the SoCal area. They gave me the number of a guy in El Segundo, no return phone call...😒 I am stuck with the ref. Now I am concerned when it comes time for renewal again after I sort this whole mess out...I am telling yah, for me, nothing but 75 and older for now on....

to install the kit, give yourself some good time. not a really a 4hr install, unless you have done them before... But can be done in a weekend... ;)
